ENTREPRENEURSHIP

ACTIVITY 1

Tony Tan Caktiong was born in Fujian, China, to Chinese immigrants. He went to Chiang Kai

Shek College for secondary school and earned a chemical engineering degree from the University of

Santo Tomas. When Tan first opened Jollibee, he intended to open an ice cream shop, but he soon

expanded to include hamburgers, french fries, and fried chicken. Eduardo Cojuangco Jr. studied

agriculture at the University of the Philippines and California Polytechnic College in San Luis Obispo,

California. The University of Mindanao awarded him the degree of Doctor of Economics Honoris Causa,

and the Tarlac College of Agriculture awarded him the degree of Doctor of Agri-Business Honoris Causa.

And Henry Sy finished his secondary school at what is now known as the Chiang Kai Shek College in

Tondo, Manila, and graduated from Far Eastern University with an Associate of Arts degree in

commercial studies in 1950. He learned English and Filipino at the same time as he was in school

(Tagalog).

Their field of entrepreneurial activity is incompatible with the entrepreneur's educational background or

expertise since, according to what I've read, their courses or their bachelor's degrees greatly differ from

the business they established. Yet, they made it big and became successful.

These entrepreneurs are known for being hardworking, enthusiastic, dedicated, and committed. They all

have such characteristics, making them one of the wealthiest people in the Philippines, if not Asia. They

strive harder more than anyone else just to make their dreams a reality.

They gained and learned the required abilities for their chosen profession because their educational

backgrounds were so dissimilar to their area of employment or industry. Maybe, they were really
passionate about their chosen business that even if it was not aligned to their educational backgrounds,

they still pursued it.

Finally, they employ others in their company. They need someone to work for them and perform the tasks

they can no longer accomplish since their company is so huge. They can't handle it on their own, and if

they do, they won't be able to satisfy their increasing client base.

1. REFLECTION: “Business ideas are not business opportunities… unless they solve problems.”

An idea is rarely valuable, but an opportunity is based on a more detailed vision of a prospective

future business endeavor. However, opportunities are worthless unless they provide a solution to a

specific problem. We all have business ideas but not all solve problems. Meaning, a business can’t be

establish if it does not offer the needed solution of the customers and developing a useful product to fill

the void and improve people's lives. In order for it to be called opportunities, it should be able to fill the

needs and offer solutions, and close the gap.
