At the end of this lesson, you will be able to…
a.

visualize and order numbers up to 10 000 in increasing and decreasing

order;
b. analyze and construct numbers using the given digits.
c. identify the greatest and the least number from a set of numerals.
d. write numbers that comes before/ after the given set of numbers.
PRE-TEST
INSTRUCTION: Complete the table by arranging each set of numbers in increasing
and decreasing order. (10 points)
NUMERALS Increasing Order Decreasing Order
4 340, 4 120, 4 278, 4 264

1 380, 1 235, 2 456, 1 897

873, 590, 1 345, 973

6 560, 7 560, 4 560, 5 560

9 560, 9 4 33, 7 230, 8 000

Pao plans to read 3 storybooks with three different

number of pages. He wants to start reading the
book with the least number of pages first.

pages 139
pages
has 186 has Page | 4
pages 112 has
Help Pao arrange the books to read. Start from the book with the least
number of pages up to the book with the greatest number of pages.
Remember that Pao wants to start reading the book with the least number
of pages up to the greatest number of pages.

To do
this,
we
may
use
the
idea
of

comparing numbers.
Book Hundreds Tens Ones
The Doves 1 8 6
I am Brave 1 1 2
Bright 1 3 9
When the numbers are arranged in order from least to greatest number, the
arrangement is called increasing order or ascending order.

1234
Increasing Order/
Ascending Order
When the numbers are arranged in order from greatest to the least number, it is
called decreasing order or descending order.

43 2
1
Decreasing Order/ Descending Order

The order that Pao wanted to do in reading the books is in increasing order.
Book Hundreds Tens Ones
The Doves 1 8 6
I Am Brave 1 1 2
Bright 1 3 9

Since the digits in the highest place value (1) are the same, we shall look at the
digits in the next highest place value: the tens.
1<3<8
Increasing Order
Page | 5
Therefore, the increasing order of the pages of the three books is 112, 139, and
186. I Am Brave has the least number of pages. This is followed by Bright. The
book with the greatest number of pages is The Dove.
This means that Pao should start reading I Am Brave first before the other
two. Example #2: Arrange 4 345, 2 530, 2 623 in decreasing order.
Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
4 3 4 5
2 5 3 0
2 6 2 3

In the thousands place, the digit 4 is the greatest. It means that 4 345 is the
greatest number. The thousands digit of the other two are the same, so we
compare the digits of the next place value which is hundreds. The digits are 5
and 6, where 6 is greater than 5 (6>5). This means that 2 623 is the second
greatest number and the smallest number among the three is 2 530.

The arrangement in decreasing order is 4 345, 2 623, 2 530.

A. Choose the greatest and the least number in the list. (2 points each: total of
10 points)
Least: ___________ Greatest:
1. 673 564 765 2. 1,670 980 500 3.

__________ Least: ___________

2,890 2,990 3,000 4. 2,781 3,890

Greatest: __________ Least:

1,890 5. 6,700 6,710 6,600
