Let’s Study and Analyze

Verbs take different forms to show the time of action or condition. They
are simple tenses, perfect tenses, and progressive tenses.
In this lesson, you will be focusing on the simple tenses.

The simple tenses are of three kinds. The simple present tense, simple
past tense and simple future tense.
• Simple present tense describes habits, routines, and things that are
true.
• Simple past tense describes an action that took place and ended in
the past. It has definite past time.
• Simple future tense describes an action that will happen or be
completed in the future.

Tense refers to time. In the sentence, the verb has the duty of indicating
the time or condition.
➢ A verb that refers to the present is in the simple present tense.
➢ A verb that refers to the past is in the simple past tense.
➢ A verb that refers to the future is in the simple future tense.

The simple present tense denotes a habitual action or anything true in

the present or general.

townspeople somewhere in the Philippines, on any given
day, gather together to venerate their patron saint,
express their gratitude for the bountiful harvest, or to

promote tourism.
Filipinos celebrate fiestas or festivals with such
fervor and in many different ways. They dress up in
colorful and gay costumes, paint their faces and even
their whole body, or create beautiful dresses out of

mention a few, are also served to visitors. Unique games
like ‘patintero’, ‘palosebo’, ‘sisirang barya’, ‘basagang
palayok’, and ‘hulihan ng biik’ are also observed. But
the most awaited part of these celebrations is the street
dancing. People from neighboring cities and even
foreigners spend money just to witness this highlight of
the festival. Lively dancing portraying the rich dances of
the town is put to life by the beat of drums and heart
thumping music. Street dancing is joined by different
groups such as youth-oriented groups, religious

Another trait is respect for women. Filipino women are highly

regarded by men. Time and again foreigners as well as Filipino soldiers
have praised this trait. Yet it seems, it is fast disappearing among our
young people. To restore it, our young girls must prove themselves worthy
of respect.

What Have You Learned?

Directions: On your worksheet, classify all the underlined verbs as to

simple present tense, simple past tense and simple future tense.

Grandfather told me this story. A man finds an eagle’s egg and puts it
into the nest of a prairie chicken. The eaglet hatches with the brood of
chicks and grows up with them.
All his life, the eagle thought he was a prairie chicken, so he did what
the prairie chickens did. He scratched in the dirt for seed and insects to eat.
He clucked. And he flew no more than a few feet off the ground.
Years passed, and the eagle grew old. One day, he sees a magnificent
bird far above him in the sky. It hangs gracefully on the air. It soars with
scarcely a beat of its strong wings.
“What a beautiful bird,” he says to his neighbor. “What is it?” “That’s
an eagle, the chief of birds – but don’t give it a second thought. You could
never be like him.”
However, the eagle thought and told himself, “Someday, I shall be like
that beautiful bird!” My mother and siblings will be proud of me. All of my
neighbors will make me famous. My fame will spread throughout the island.
