● Lesson 2 – Wh-Questions

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. ask and answer YES/NO questions;

2. ask and answer Wh-questions;
3. construct YES/NO and Wh-questions correctly; and

Lesson 1: Yes and No Questions

Let’s Do This

Directions: From the dialog below, identify the questions that are answerable with
either a YES or NO.

x
Let’s Study and Analyze

Obtaining information can be difficult in both verbal and written language.

In order to get and receive information from one person to another or vice versa
requires the skills in asking and answering questions correctly. One of the basic
types of questions in English is the Yes/No Question.

Yes/No questions are also called closed questions because there are only
two possible responses: YES or NO. When forming Yes/No question, you must
include one of these verbs:

1. VERB BE: am, is, are, was, were, will be, has, have, had

● Use the VERB BE to ask YES/NO Question about the identity or description
of a person, place, or things.

Examples:
Question 1: Is this lesson interesting?
Reponses: (A) Yes. / Yes, it is. / Yes, it is interesting. (affirmative)
(B) No. / No, it isn’t. / No, it is not interesting. (Negative)
Question 2: Are they the new learners this year?
Reponses: (A) Yes. / Yes, they are. / Yes, they are the new learners.
(B) No. / No, they aren’t. / No, they are not the new
learners.

xi
Note: The responses can be short (YES/affirmative or NO/negative), long
(Yes/No followed by the subject and verb be) or longer (subject + verb + object).

● Use the VERB BE with a preposition to ask YES/NO Question about a

present or past location

Examples:
Question: Am I at the correct location?
Reponses: (A) Yes. / Yes, you are. / Yes, you are at the correct
location.
(B) No. / No, you aren’t. / No, you are not at the correct
location.
Question: Was the information given on the internet?
Reponses: (A) Yes. / Yes, it was. / Yes, it was given on the internet.
(B) No. / No, it wasn’t. / No, it was not given on the
internet.

● Use the VERB BE to ask YES/NO Question about a current/past activity or

situation. This requires the Present/Past Progressive: BE + (verb + ing)

Examples:
Question: Are we working today?
Reponses: (A) Yes. / Yes, we are. / Yes, we are working today.
(B) No. / No, we aren’t. / No, we are not working today.
Question: Were they writing their scripts?

xii
Reponses: (A) Yes. / Yes, they were. / Yes, they were writing their
scripts.
(B) No. /No, they weren’t. /No, they were not writing their
scripts.

● Use the VERB HAVE to ask if somebody has done something or if some
action has taken place: (HAVE + past participle)

Examples:
Question: Has your teacher, Ms. Perez, arrived?
Reponses: (A) Yes. / Yes, she has. / Yes, she has arrived.
(B) No. / No, she hasn’t. / No, she has not [yet] arrived.
Question: Have you ever driven a car?
Reponses: (A) Yes. / Yes, I have. / Yes, I have driven a car.
(B) No. / No, I haven’t. / No, I have not [yet] driven a car.

2. FUNCTIONAL VERBS: do, does, did

● Use FUNCTIONAL VERBS to ask YES/NO Question in order to obtain facts

about people, places, or things.

Examples:
Question: Do you like to continue your tasks?
Reponses: (A) Yes. / Yes, I do. / Yes, I [do] like to continue my tasks.
(B) No. / No, I don’t. / No, I don’t finish my task.

xiii
Question: Does she belong in this class?
Reponses: (A) Yes. / Yes, she does. / Yes, she does belong in this
class. / Yes, she belongs in this class.
(B) No. / No, she doesn’t. / No, she doesn’t belong in this
class.

3. MODAL VERBS: can, could, shall, should, may, will, would, must

● Use the MODAL VERBS to ask YES/NO Question about possibilities and
uncertainties.

Examples:
Question: Should we email her?
Reponses: (A) Yes. / Yes, we should. / Yes, we should email her.
(B) No. / No, we shouldn’t / No, we should not email her.

Lesson 2: Wh-Questions

Let’s Do This

You have been away for a while and have just come back to your home town.
You meet Raymund, a friend of yours. He asks you a lot of questions. Identify the
questions which are not answerable by Yes or No. How are these questions started?

xviii
Why did you come back?
How are
you?

Where do you live?

Where have
you been?

Are you glad

to be back?

How long have you been

back?

Do you have any

plans to go away
again?

What are you doing

now? Can you lend me some
money?

What do you observe with the first two letters used in the given questions?

Let’s Study and Analyze

We use question words to ask for certain types of information about specific
qualities, times, places, people and so on. Another type of question is the Wh-
questions. These are the questions starting with Wh-words including: what,
when, where, who, whom, which, whose, why and how.

Wh-Question is defined as a question in English that requests for

information and does not expect yes/no answers.

 Who is used to asking about people.

xix
Examples: Who made that beautiful flower vase?
Who do you like most in your class?

 What is used to ask about things.

Examples: What course do you want in college?

What do you think about this module?

 When is used to ask about time.

Examples: When will the class start?

When are you coming?

 Where is used to ask about a place.

Examples: Where does she live?

Where is my chair?

 Which is used to ask about choices.

Examples: Which one do you like?

Which color does she prefer?

 Why is used to ask about reasons/causes.

Examples: Why did you forget our appointment?

Why are you laughing so loud?

xx
 Whom is used to ask about people (object of the verb)

Examples: Whom did you meet yesterday?

Whom was Jenny talking to?

 Whose is used to ask about possession.

Examples: Whose car is on the corner?

Whose books are missing?

 How is used to ask about manners/process.

Examples: How can you solve this equation?

How are we going to answer it?

How to Ask and Answer the Wh-Questions

1. With an auxiliary verb

Wh-word + auxiliary verb + subject + main verb

When is he coming?
Possible response: He is coming on Monday.

Other examples:

1. What did you read? Correct Possible Response: I read books.

What you did read? Incorrect

xxi
2. Why should we read books? Correct
Why we should read books? Incorrect
Possible Response: We read books because we can learn a lot from
them.

Remember:

Auxiliary verbs are helping verbs. Verb BE, Functional Verbs, and Modal
verbs can also be used as auxiliary or helping verbs.

2. Without an auxiliary verb (when wh-words replaced subjects already)

Wh-word + main verb …?

What happened in Mindanao?

Possible Response:

A successful concert happened in Mindanao.

Other examples:

1. Question: Who made this beautiful garden?

2. To create a question that can be answered either by a yes or no, start the
question with Do, Does or Did, (Doesn’t, Don’t, Didn’t) for a negative question)
then add a subject (the person or thing that does the action) followed by the base
form of the verb and only then add the rest of the sentence.
3. We use modal verbs in yes/no questions when asking about possibility or
uncertainty. All modal verbs are followed by a main verb in its base form.
4. There are several ways to answer YES/NO Questions, especially when using

B. Wh-questions

1. Wh-questions begin with what, when, where, who, whom, which, whose, why
and how. We use them to ask for information. The answer cannot be yes or no.
2. We can add emphasis to Wh-questions in speaking by stressing the auxiliary
verb do. We usually do this when we have not already received the information that
we expected from an earlier question, or to show strong interest.
3. When we ask negative Wh-questions, we use the auxiliary verb do when there is
no other auxiliary or modal verb, even when the Wh-word is the subject.
