Lesson 1: Local and Global Communication in Multicultural Settings

Learning activity 1: You have learned that co-cultures aren’t based on the
country you were born in or the national society in which you were raised.
Instead, it’s composed of smaller groups of people with whom you identify
yourself with. These co-cultures could be based on shared activities (e.g. surfers,
riders, tri-athletes, painters, bakers, guitarists, etc.) or beliefs (e.g. Catholics, Born
Again Christians).

a. List five examples of co-cultures based on your observation of your


community?
1. Musicians

b. In what group do you belong? What made you a member of this group?
- Choreographer, Designer, Gays and Transgenders. I believe I belong to these group
since I’ve been a Dance Choreographer for 3 years and up until now. I am also a Designer
as I use my leisure time to design mask etc., I even help my sister on her project to show
my creativity. Lastly, I identify my self as part of the LGBTQIA+ Community because of the
characteristics, and affection to others that I possess. I am proud and dignified to be a gay
and I dont see any problem with that at all considering that it made me to be true to
myself. And these what made me to be part of the different co- cultures found in our
community.
c. How does it feel being a member of this co-cultural group?
-To be honest its a pleasure and I am beyond grateful to be part of these co- cultural
group. It helps me socialize and to be more aware on what is happening in our community.
Through joining co- cultural groups I can also help our community to make it a safe and friendly
community to become a better place to live in.

Learning Activity 2: Identify whether the following are examples of assimilation,


accommodation or separation.

ACCOMMODATION 1. Linda who’s living in US for 20 years now still goes to Filipino
stores to buy native Filipino products.

ASSIMILATION 2. Linda’s husband loves listening to classic OPM songs than to


popular American songs.

ASSIMILATION 3. Dan, who is an Irish immigrant, solely believes that at the center
of the American way is the American Dream that is achievable
through hard work.

ASSIMILATION 4. Chloe prefers to live among her racial group than among other
group.

ACCOMMODATION 5. Charlotte’s family moved to the city. She rejects the


host culture in favor of preserving their culture of origin.

Lesson 2: Varieties and Registers of Spoken and Written Language

Learning Activity 1: Identify whether the lines are frozen, formal, consultative, casual or
intimate register.
