Teaching the concept “Why Heavy and Light Objects Fall at the Same Time” in a Constructivist

Approach will be of the following:

- Teachers will provide learning experiences for students and give students the opportunities to think
through problems and find solutions.

- Learners will be the one to make a meaning and knowledge, through the given real life experiences

- Learners will have opportunities to tailor learning by working work with others.

Lesson Flow:

 For introductory The teacher will begin by asking the children about their thoughts about
gravity: What is gravity
 The teacher will give students time to explain their ideas and will record their thoughts on the
board or on a piece of chart paper.
 After the brainstorming, the teacher will show to students two objects; a hammer and a feather.
 The teacher will ask students to predict what would happen if you dropped them simultaneously
from the same height: Would they hit the ground at the same time or at different times?
Expected answer from the students: the hammer will drop first
 After that, the teacher will also ask the students what if this experiment was done on the moon?
would they have the same outcome?
 The teacher will show to students a video of an experiment (dropping of hammer and feather at
the same height and rate on the moon)
 The teacher will then ask Did you expect the hammer and the feather to land on the surface of
the Moon at the same time? Why do you think this happened?
Expected answers:
 First group are task to drop a heavy object and a light object of the same (shape and size) from
the same height at the same time.
 Second group will drop a large ball and a small ball from the same height at the same time.
 After the activity the teacher will ask the students to report their findings in the front.

Expected outcomes:

 What would happen if you repeated this activity in a vacuum (an environment with no air)?

which will hit the ground first? (Answer: Neither. They hit the ground at the same time.)

 The teacher will show to students two objects; a hammer and a feather.
 Then the teacher will drop the two objects simultaneously from the same height.
 After that, the teacher will ask why did the two hit the ground at different times?
 With their pre-existing knowledge, the students will say it’s because hammer is heavier than the
feather.
 The teacher will not tell whether if their answers are right or wrong. Instead the teacher will ask
the students “what if the same experiment will be done on the surface of the moon?”
 Teacher will show to students a video of the same experiment( dropping of hammer and feather
on the surface of the moon). https://youtu.be/KDp1tiUsZw8
 Then the teacher will ask: Why did the hammer and the feather fall at the same rate on the
Moon but not on Earth?
 The students will probably answer because of the difference in gravity
 The teacher will not tell the answer, Instead the teacher will group the student into two groups
to perform an experiment.

Part 1
 First group are task to drop a heavy object and a light object of the same (shape and size) from
the same height at the same time.
 Second group will drop a large ball and a small ball from the same height at the same time.
 Expected findings:
 Group 1 -They hit the ground at the same time.
 Group 2 -The small ball will hit the ground first, because it has less air resistance.

 The teacher will ask why first the group 1, based on your experience, why did both of the object
regardless of their mass both hit the ground at the same time?
 Group 1 will probably say it’s because they are in the same shape and size which makes their air
resistance the same. Regardless of their mass they will hit the ground at same time because
they are dropped in the same height.

Part 2
 The two groups will repeat the experiment , however this will be done in vacuum chamber (an
environment with no air) provided by the teacher.
 At the end of the experiment the teacher will let the students to report their findings in front of
the class.

 In vacuum chamber both group will found out all the objects hit the ground at the same time,
regardless of their shape or size
