1 General
This document provides input from the generator perspective to specify and design the
generator foundation for air-cooled machines and water and hydrogen-cooled generator W88
(50WT25E-138) type. These requirements are mentioned herein as a guidance and Generator
Engineering shall be contacted in case of missing or additional inquiries.
1.1 Definitions
1) This specification applies to air-cooled generators of type A7x series (21Z and 23Z) and
water and hydrogen-cooled generator W88 (50WT25E-138) type.
Rev. Released
2) This specification defines the requirements for the Generator foundation from Generator
point of view in terms of design, construction and dimensions.
D
2.2.1 Description
The system consists of a long, pre-tensioned anchor, which his hold by a nut inside an anchor
box assembly. The anchor box assembly is embedded in the foundation. The assembly consists
of a pressure-plate, which itself transmits the anchor loads to the foundation. The anchor is
surrounded by a sleeve, which is connected to the pressure-plate. The entire assembly is seal-
welded. The nut shall be locked against rotation in the anchor box. The length of the anchor box
shall be designed to lower the anchor bolt below top of concrete level for generator installation.

Material for the anchor box and supports shall provide sufficient strength for the design
requirements. The material should as a minimum be EN 10025 S235 JR or equivalent.
The arrangement of the foundation anchors is given by Generator and foundation outline
D
The anchor box systems shall be installed in the foundation before concrete placement. This
system allows the site to install the anchor bolts shortly before the installation of the Generator
instead of at the time of foundation construction.

Before positioning of anchor boxes in the defined location, a dimensional check shall be
performed to verify that the dimensions correspond with the design documents. The vertical
alignment of the anchor boxes is critical to generator installation. The tube and box shall be
aligned to provide a 90-degree angle with a tolerance of +/- 0.2 degrees:
Anchor boxes shall be positioned in the foundation prior to concrete placement. The anchor
boxes and other embedment’s shall be adequately braced prior to the concrete placement to
meet the location requirements specified below. During the concrete placement, care should be
taken to avoid entrapping air under the embedment. Entrapped air shall be removed by
mechanical means as necessary.
Before concrete placement, the anchor box locations shall be surveyed and recorded in the X,
Y, and Z directions.
Before concrete placement, the straightness of the anchor box shall be measured and recorded.
The generator embedment’s, including anchor boxes, shall located according to the locations on
the drawings.

ATTENTION: All these tolerances are to be compliant after pour of concrete. Embedded parts
shall be installed with zero deviation from theoretical values before pour of concrete.

The anchor box shall be covered during concrete placement and remain covered until the
anchor bolts are installed to avoid having water, concrete, or other material enter into the anchor
box.
ATTENTION: The anchor box assemblies shall not be filled with concrete or grout and shall
remain free of grout after installation of the anchor bolts.
After concrete placement the final anchor box locations shall be surveyed and recorded in the X,
Y, and Z directions. GE shall be informed of any deviations from the above allowable tolerances.
2.3.1 For Generators A7x, type WY..Z (generator terminals installed on the top of the generator
housing)
The foundation load requirements for the rotor removal (e.g. support structure, intermediate
rotor support) shall be specified project specific. The length to which the rotor is withdrawn is
defined as well project specific.
IMPORTANT:
Foundation pits shall preferably not be placed in the area of any rotor removal supports, or shall
be designed to carry the expected loads.

The heat exchangers, which cool the hydrogen within the generator, are surface heat
exchangers with water as a cooling medium. Each cooler consists of numerous straight tubes
with fins on their outer surface to increase the cooling surface and consequently the cooling
efficiency. Four coolers are installed vertically within the middle part of generator (in 2 cooler
pockets, on left and right side of the generator). Inlet and outlet of water are in the bottom part
of coolers in the foundation.
