Focus Unit: National Immunization Program

(Expanded Program on Immunization)

An ounce of prevention is worth a pond of cure”

The only strategy to control any infectious disease is through vaccination. It will not only
prevent the actual clinical disease but also prevent complications because vaccines provide
almost life-long immunity.

RATIONALE FOR THE PROGRAM

Immunizable disease is still the top cause of morbidity and mortality

a. diphtheria

b. measles (6 measles (6th top cause of death in 1989)

c. pertussis

d. tetanus

e. polio

f. TB

g. Hepatitis

2. Immunization shows to be effective in decreasing mortality Immunization shows to be

effective in decreasing mortality

3. Preventing an immunizable disease cost less than treating an immunizable disease

4. Immunization has multiple beneficial effects

5. Immunization protects children from having an increased risk in spreading the disease.
BENEFITS OF IMMUNIZATION

 Most cost-effective clinical preventive services

 Saves lives
 Protect children from VPD
 Continue to give protection against more diseases and to other age group as new
vaccines are developed.
 Prevent the spread of diseases
 Prevents virus transmission from one generation to another by eliminating or
eradicating the disease.
 Source of high investment return to the government.

CONSEQUENCES OF NON-VACCINATION

Can develop diseases that could lead to prolonged or long term disabilities
Unable to go to school/constrained to become productive individuals
Families are burdened with financial toll for medical bills and lost time for work
Daily loss of quality life

GOAL

 To reduce morbidity and mortality rates due to vaccine preventable diseases.
