HYPOTHESIS: FORMULATION Of HYPOTHESIS, ALTERNATIVE HYPOTHESIS, NULL

HYPOTHESIS, STATISTICAL HYPOTHESIS, EVALUATING HYPOTHESIS

A. Definition of Hypothesis
The word hypothesis consists of two words: Hypo + Thesis = Hypothesis. ‘Hypo’ means
tentative or subject to the verification and ‘Thesis’ means statement about solution of a problem.
B. Formulating of hypothesis

Hypotheses can relate to almost anything. For example, urbanization and urban lifestyles
increase suicide rates, broken families tend to lead to juvenile delinquency, modernization and
education among women lead to increased divorces, poverty leads to crime, and unemployment
among youth leads to violent crimes. There are several things that need to be considered in
hypothesis research, namely:

 The hypothesis must be clear and precise.

 The hypotheses must be testable.
 The hypothesis must state the relationship between variables.
 The hypothesis must be limited in scope and must be specific.
 The hypothesis should be stated as far as possible in the simplest terms so that it is the same
easy to understand by all parties.
 The hypothesis must be testable in a reasonable time.
 The hypothesis must explain empirical references

C. Definition of Alternative hypothesis and Null hypothesis

a. Alternative Hypothesis
An alternative hypothesis is a statement that explains that there is a
relationship between two variables selected in a study.

b. Null Hypothesis
This is a hypothesis that proposes no relationship or difference between the
two of variables. The null hypothesis is a general statement that states that there is no
relationship between the two phenomena under consideration or that there is no
relationship between the two groups. The data collected is tested through several
statistical tools designed to measure the extent to which the date deviates from the null
hypothesis.

D. Definition of statistical hypothesis, evaluating hypothesis

a. Statistical hypothesis
A statistical hypothesis is a statement or conjecture about one or more
populations. Hypothesis testing is a process of testing the significance of the
parameters of population based on samples taken from it. As such, it is also referred
to as the "Significance Test".

b. Evaluating hypothesis
 Plausibility of Explanation
 Testability of Explanation

 Adequacy of Scope
 Usefulness of False Hypotheses
 Roots in Existing Theories
 Suitability for Intended Purpose
 Simplicity of Explanation
 Level of Explanation
