3. Equipment needed: The equipment needed for sitting volleyball is a special sitting
volleyball court, a net, a volleyball, athletic/comfortable clothes or team jerseys.

4. Activity Description:
• Six players are on the court at a time. Participants must be sitting at all times. Their
torso/butt must be touching the ground.
• Sitting volleyball is played on a small court (10m x 6m) and has a low net (1.05M for
women and 1.15m for men). There are lines marking the bounds.
• Sets are best of five. The first team to get to 25 points wins (must win by a two-point
difference). If it goes to a fifth set, the winner is the first team to reach 15 points (must
win by a two-point difference).
• Each team has three touches per possession, and one player cannot touch the ball two
times in a row. A block does not count as one of the three touches.
• The players in the back row are allowed to hit the ball, as long as they do not cross the
two-meter attack line.
• While serving, the opposing team is allowed to block or attack a serve.
• Players cannot touch the net.

5. Primary social interaction pattern(s) (activity analysis): The primary social interaction
pattern for sitting volleyball is intergroup (action of a competitive nature between two or
more intragroup). When playing volleyball or sitting volleyball, there are two teams
competing against each other in order to win. The teammates must work together to be
successful. Every player has the same intended goal to win the game. There needs to be
clear and constant communication between the players and coaches.

6. Adaptation: There are tons of assistive technology and adapted equipment for people with
paraplegia and other spinal cord injuries. People with paraplegia will most likely use a
manual or electric wheelchair to move independently. Their choice of wheelchair
depends on personal preference and how strong their upper body is. A simple piece of
equipment is a shower chair or tub transfer bench for them to shower independently and
safely. Grab bars on the walls of the bathroom provide stability.

7. Participant: Young adult or adult (any gender) with paraplegia.
