(INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY 1)

(LIST OF WORDS)
1. ATOM
 The smallest unit of ordinary matter that makes up a chemical element is an atom. Every
solid, liquid, gas, and plasma is made up of atoms that are either neutral or ionized.
2. ATOMIC MASS
 The mass of an atom is defined as its atomic mass. Although the kilogram is the SI unit
of mass, atomic mass is frequently expressed in the non-SI unit atomic mass unit, unified
mass, or Dalton.
3. ATOMIC NUMBER
 A chemical element's atomic number is the number of protons found in the nucleus of
each atom of that element. A chemical element is identified by its atomic number.
4. PROTONS
 Protons are positively charged particles found within an atom's nucleus.
5. PERCENT ABUNDANCE
 As a percent, the equation would be: (x) +(100-x) = 100, where the 100 designates the
total percent in nature.
6. ELECTRONS AND ELECTRONS
 Electrons are a type of subatomic particle with a negative charge. Protons are a type of
subatomic particle with a positive charge.
7. ISOTOPES
 Isotopes are two or more types of atoms that have the same atomic number and position
in the periodic table.
8. ATOMIC STRUCTURE
 An atom is a complex arrangement of negatively charged electrons arranged in defined
shells about a positively charged nucleus.
9. STABLE ISOTOPES
 Stable isotopes are non-radioactive forms of atoms.
10. UNSTABLE ISOTOPES
 A radioisotope is an isotope of an element that is unstable and undergoes radioactive
decay

(REFLECTION)
In this module I realized that isotopes are members of a family of an element that all have the same
number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. Every chemical element has one or more
isotopes. Furthermore, isotopes have its types, The Stable isotopes which have a stable proton-
neutron combination and do not display any sign of decay, and the Unstable isotopes which have
unstable combination of protons and neutrons, and these isotopes decay, emitting radiation that
includes alpha, beta and gamma rays.
