EXERCISE 6.4

1. Find the square root of each of the following numbers by Long Division
method.

(i) 2304

______________________________________________________________________________

(ii) 4489

1
(viii) 7921

Solution:

(x) 1024

Solution:

(xii) 900

Solution:

3. Find the square root of the following decimal numbers.

(ii) 7.29

Solution:

______________________________________________________________________________

(iv) 42.25

Solution:

3
(v) 31.36

Solution:

4. Find the least number which must be subtracted from each of the
following numbers so as to get a perfect square. Also find the square root
of the perfect square so obtained.

(i) 402

Solution:

Here remainder is 2
2 is the least required number to be subtracted from 402 to get a perfect
square
New number = 402 – 2 = 400
Thus, √400 = 20

_____________________________________________________________________________

(ii) 1989

Solution:

4
Here remainder is 53
53 is the least required number to be subtracted from 1989 to make it a perfect
square.
New number = 1989 – 53 = 1936
Thus, √1936 = 44

______________________________________________________________________________

(iii) 3250

Solution:

Here remainder is 1
1 is the least number to be subtracted from 3250 to get a perfect square.
New number = 3250 – 1 = 3249
Thus, √3249 = 57

______________________________________________________________________________

5. Find the least number which must be added to each of the following
numbers so as to get a perfect square. Also, find the square root of the
perfect square so obtained.
5
(i) 525

Solution:

Here remainder is 41
It represents that 222 is less than 525.
Hence, the next number is 232 = 529.
The number to be added is 529 – 525 = 4

Hence, 4 is the number to be added to 525 to make it a perfect square.

New number = 529

Thus, √529 = 23

_____________________________________________________________________________

(ii) 1750

Solution:

Here the remainder is 69

This shows that 412 is less than 1750.

6
Hence, the next perfect square number is 422 = 1764.
The number to be added is 1764 – 1750 = 14.

Hence, 14 is the number to be added to 1750 to make it a perfect square.

New number = 1764

Thus, √1764 = 42

______________________________________________________________________________

(iii) 252

Solution:

Here the remainder is 27.

This shows that 152 is less than 252.
Hence, the next perfect square number is 162 = 256
Therefore, the number to be added is 256 – 252 = 4
New number = 252 + 4 = 256
Hence 4 is the number to be added to 252 to make it a perfect square.
New number = 256
Thus, √256 = 16

6. Find the length of the side of a square whose area is 441 m2.
Solution:

Given that,

7
Area of the square = 441 m2

S2 = 441

S = √441

∴ √441 = 21 m

Hence the length of the side of a square is 21 m.

7. (b) In a right triangle ABC, ∠B = 90°, if AC = 13 cm, BC = 5 cm, find AB.

Solution:

In right angled triangle ABC, using Pythagoras property,

AC2 = AB2 + BC2

⇒ (13)2 = AB2 + (5)2
⇒ 169 = AB2 + 25

8
⇒ 169 – 25 = AB2
⇒ AB2 = 144
AB = √144 = 12 cm
Thus, AB = 12 cm.

8. A gardener has 1000 plants. He wants to plant these in such a way that
the number of rows and the number of columns remain the same. Find
the minimum number of plants he needs more for this.
Solution:

To find the minimum number of plants needed, we have to find √1000.

This shows that 312 is less than 1000.

Hence the next perfect square is 322 = 1024.

The number to be added is 1024 – 1000 = 24
Therefore, the gardener needs to plant 24 more plants to make it perfect
square.
