CHAPTER 9 – ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS

CLASS : VIII

DATE : 04.08.2021
______________________________________________________________________________

 Expressions are formed from variables and constants.

 Terms are added to form expressions.
 Product of factors form terms.
 Numerical factor of a term is called its coefficient.
 Expressions that contain one, two, three or more terms are called as
monomial, binomial, trinomial or polynomials respectively.
 In general any expression containing one or more terms with non-zero
co-efficient is called a polynomial.
 Like terms are formed from the same variables and the power of these
variables are the same but coefficient of like terms need not be the
same.

1
EXERCISE : 9.1

1. Identify the terms, their coefficients for each of the following

expressions:

3. Add the following:

(i) ab – bc, bc – ca, ca – ab

Ans:

Given: ab – bc, bc – ca, ca – ab

(ab – bc) + (bc – ca) + (ca – ab) (Adding all the terms)
= ab – bc + bc – ca + ca – ab
= (ab – ab) + (bc – bc) + (ca – ca) (Collecting the like terms together)
=0+0+0
=0

2
(iii) 2p2q2 – 3pq + 4, 5 + 7pq – 3p2q2

Ans:

By arranging the like terms in the same column, we have

4. (a) Subtract 4a – 7ab + 3b + 12 from 12a – 9ab + 5b – 3

Ans:

Arranging the like terms column-wise, we have

[Change the signs of all the terms of lower expressions and then add]

(b) Subtract 3xy + 5yz – 7zx from 5xy – 2yz – 2zx + 10xyz

Ans:

5xy – 2yz – 2zx + 10xyz – (3xy + 5yz – 7zx)

= 5xy – 2yz – 2zx + 10xyz – 3xy – 5yz + 7zx

= 5xy – 3xy – 2yz – 5yz – 2zx + 7zx + 10xyz

3
= 2xy – 7yz + 5zx + 10xyz

HOMEWORK

EXERCISE: 9.1

1. (i), (ii), (iii), 2. 3. (ii), (iv), 4 (c)

EXERCISE: 9.2

1. Find the product of the following pairs of monomials.

(iii) -4p, 7pq

Ans: -4p × 7pq = -28p2q

(iv) 4p3, -3p

Ans: 4p3 × -3p = -12p4

(v) 4p, 0

Ans: 4p × 0 = 0

2. Find the areas of rectangles with the following pairs of monomials as

their lengths and breadths respectively:

iii) (20x2, 5y2)

Let length be 20x2 and breadth be 5y2.

4
Area of the rectangle = length x breadth sq. units

= 20x2 x 5y2 = 100 x2 y2 sq. units.

iv) (4x, 3x2)

Let length be 20x2 and breadth be 5y2.

Area of the rectangle = length x breadth sq. units

= 4x × 3x2 = 12 x3 sq. units.

4. Obtain the volume of rectangular boxes with the following length,

breadth and height respectively.

(iii) xy, 2x2y, 2xy2

Given l = xy; b = 2x2y; h = 2xy2
Volume = l × b × h Cu. Units
= xy × 2x2y × 2xy2
= 4 x4 y4 cu units.

(iv) a, 2b, 3c
Given l = a; b = 2b; h = 3c
Volume = l × b × h Cu. Units
= a × 2b × 3c
= 6abc Cu. Units.

5. Obtain the product of

(i) xy, yz, zx

5
Product = xy × yz × zx
= x2 y2 z2

(ii) a, – a2, a3

Product = a × – a2 × a3

= – a6

(iii) 2, 4y, 8y2, 16y3

Product = 2 × 4y × 8y2 × 16y3

= 1024 y6
