Atalaya,
I appreciated observing this social studies lesson. One strength I think was the instructional method of having students write from the perspectives of the various Civil Rights
leaders/social activists. From the few that shared, I could see how they were beginning to empathize with and better understand the perspectives of these historical figures.
Also, you seemed at ease with technology, for instance, displaying word on what seemed like a Padlet, having students write in the Chat box, etc. Also, you seemed to have a
good rapport (though it’s hard to really evaluate this online), with students and manage the pacing of the lesson, for instance, keeping it moving forward. Finally the purpose of
the lesson and directions were articulated very clearly.
Think of how to introduce the lesson with more punch, a greater a hook. Maybe a piece of a moving speech or quote from one of the people they are studying? And interesting
fact, etc. Also, also think about how to have formatives throughout the lesson, checks for understanding as you teach. For instance, when students had brainstorming and
writing time, use that to informally check in and conference with students, particularly ones you think might need more help. Ask them to share a sentence or explain their
writing plan, then provide feedback. ALWAYS provided specific feedback to help them grow and learn in the skill. I love that you had students share their work, which is very
important—at some point, though, you want to give them specific pointers in how to improve. This could be in writing as to not do it in front of classmates.
Think about how to close the lesson in a meaningful way-you certainly did encourage them—but one that pushes higher order thinking skills and advances their thinking and
knowledge. Perhaps you could pose a question to them, that helps them think about another research/writing assignment. Maybe ask them who are activists today? How has
pushing for racial equity, for instance, changed in the way it’s delivered and carried out? This also connects to real-world connections.
