ACTIVITY: MICROBIAL STRUCTURE

Discuss the importance of the following:

A. Spores
It serves an important function, it allows the sweat and oil to escape through your
skin, cooling you off and keeping your skin healthy while getting rid of toxins. Pores are
also the openings of hair follicles.

B. Flagella
Its providing motility that always an important feature of flagella of pathogenic
bacteria, but adhesive and other properties also have been attributed to these flagella. In
nonpathogenic bacterial colonization, flagella are important locomotive and adhesive
organelles as well.

C. Capsule
It can protect a bacterial cell from ingestion and destruction by white blood
cells (phagocytosis). While the exact mechanism for escaping phagocytosis is unclear, it
may occur because capsules make bacterial surface components more slippery, helping
the bacterium to escape engulfment by phagocytic cells.

D. Pili
It is a short, hair-like structures on the cell surface of prokaryotic cells. They can
have a role in movement, but are more often involved in adherence to surfaces,
which facilitates infection, and is a key virulence characteristic.
