    Acibo MODULE 3 – WEEK 3 Grade 8 – Mendel

    Now that you have mastered the use of modal verbs, let us gauge your
    learning by accomplishing these activities.

    A. Directions: Use the following modals in a sentence. Be sure to provide


    sentences that follow the function asked for in each item.

    1. can (ability)
    The students can sing harmoniously.
    2. could (ability in the past)
    She could paint before she started school.
    3. may (permission)
    May I go to the bathroom?
    4. might (weak possibility)
    They might not like spicy food.
    5. shall (simple future time)
    Shall we dance together?
    6. should (seek/give advice)
    You should wear appropriate attire for your
    job interview.
    7. will (intention)
    I will share.
    8. would (polite request)
    Would you please email that document to me? I need it ASAP*.
    9. must (necessity)
    They must answer.
    10. ought to (moral obligation)
    It's raining hard, the children ought to come indoors.
    B. Writing prompt:
    It’s time to test your creativity. Make your own story narrating:

    • how the sloth became very slow.


    • how the giraffe got its long neck.
    • where the shark got its fin.
    • why cats purr.
    • why dogs love bones.

    How the giraffe got its long neck

    Long long-ago giraffes’ have a very small neck that could fit its head in small holes and
    rocks. Other animals think it’s cool and get jealous because they couldn’t fit their heads into
    small holes and rocks. The giraffes also think it is cool but one giraffe doesn’t think it is cool
    he’s confused why do they think it’s cool. He is different from the others because all he
    wants is to be tall, reach the trees, and play with the birds. One night, he saw a shooting star
    and quickly wishes of his dream wanting to be tall.

    In the morning, the animals were staring at him until he wakes up surprised that many
    animals are staring at him while sleeping, and then when he stands up, he realizes his neck
    is long and he’s now taller than the others, he is so happy and can’t believe he’s tall and can
    reach the trees and birds. His wish came true, everybody was mesmerized by his new look.
    Now that’s how the giraffe got its long neck.
