“It is important that we express our emotions
emotions and feelings is through a song. Why do you
think it’s important to express our emotions or or opinions Sir because it’s one way of letting
opinions?” others understand us.”

“Very good. When we express our opinion or strong

emotions, when we tell a story, ask a question to
someone, or when we ask a favor to someone, we let
others understand us. It is also important that we
listen to someone whenever they speak. Listen
carefully to them so we can get their message. This is
the importance of sentences. Today we will discuss
the four types of sentences according to function.”

D. Lesson Proper

Sentence has four types according to functions.

DECLATIVE SENTENCE

I will be posting pictures in the board and let’s see if you

can guess the hidden word.

deck + la + rat + thieves = declarative

“Declarative Sir!”

“From these pictures, what word have you formed?”

“Very good. The first type of sentence is Declarative.”

“Now, let’s go back to the title of the songs. Let’s

look at the first set of the titles.”

You are the reason.

I have a dream. “It ends with a period.”

We are young.

“Look at the structure of the sentences and the

punctuation marks used for every sentence. Can you
please tell me how this sentence is constructed?”

“Very good. When we say something, we are declaring

facts or opinions, or anything we would like to say, we are
using the Declarative sentence. These are the most
common type of sentences. They usually provide
information, and are used to make statements. That is why
they end with a period.”

These are some of the examples:

1. I can play the violin. “I like to eat ice cream.”
2. We hope to see you tomorrow.
3. She is studying English.
“She is a good girl.”

“Now can you give other examples?”

“Very good, another example please.”

“Very good class.”

INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES:

“Now, let’s go ahead and discuss the second type of

sentence. I will be posting another set of pictures in the
board and let’s see if you can guess the hidden word.

enter + rug + A + thieves = interrogative

“Interrogative, Sir!”
“The sentence ended with the question mark.”

“The speaker is asking a question, Sir.”

“From these pictures, what word have you formed?”

“Very good. The first type of sentence is Interrogative

Sentence.”

“Now let’s go back to the second set of titles of the song.”

Where do broken hearts go?

How could an angel break my heart?

How do you heal a broken heart?

“Can you please tell me how this sentence is constructed?”

“How about, what is the speaker/or the person who is

singing trying to do to the listener?”

“Very good. Interrogative sentences are used to ask

questions. You form a question when you want to ask
someone something, either to make a request, offer
something, get information, or clarification. It is a
type of sentence that always has a question mark at the The students will give an example.
end. There are a few different sub-types of interrogative
sentences. Let’s discuss each of them.”

1 . Yes/No Interrogatives: These questions usually start

with an auxiliary verb, such as DO/DOES, CAN or
WOULD (these can also be called ‘closed questions’) and
the answer would generally be yes or no. Here are some
examples:

Do you treat others with respect?

Are you keeping your promises so everyone can

trust you?

Can you always choose to be honest even if no one

is looking at you?
The students will give an example.
“Can you please give an example?”

2. Alternative Interrogatives: These questions usually

offer two or more alternative responses, and give the other
person some options. These also start with auxiliary verbs.
Here are some examples:

Shall I tell my mom I broke the vase or shall I keep

it secret?

Will you tell him the truth or shall I tell him?

Do you prefer honest friends or do you like friends

who tolerate you?
The students will give an example.
“Please give an example.”

3. Wh- Interrogatives: These questions generally start

with words beginning with wh- such as WHAT, WHO,
WHEN, WHERE. HOW can also be used even though it
doesn’t begin with wh-
(These are also known as ‘open questions’). The answer
would generally be explanatory and open-ended. Here are
some examples:

What happened to your friend?

How did you do that?

Where did you go last night?

The students will give an example.
“Can someone please other examples?”

4. Tag Questions: These questions usually have a

declarative statement in the question. Generally, the
question is tagged onto the end of such a statement. They
consist of a main or auxiliary verb followed by a pronoun
or existential ‘there’. Here are some examples:

Gina sets a good example to everyone and makes

good impression, doesn’t she?

You’re lying to me, aren’t you?

There’s something wrong with her, isn’t there? M + pear + A + thieves = imperative

“Let’s check if you understand it, please give an

example class.”

IMPERATIVE SENTENCES:

“Now, let’s go ahead and discuss the third type of

sentence. I will be posting another set of pictures in the
board and let’s see if you can guess the hidden word.”

“Imperative, Sir”

“It also ends with a period Sir.”

“The speaker is asking a favor.”

"Using the pictures, what do you think is the third type of

sentence?”

“Now let’s go back to the third set of titles of the song.”

Just give me a reason.

The student will give an example.
Let it be.

Say something.

“Can you please tell me how this sentence is constructed?”

“That’s correct. And how about, what does the speaker

tries to do?”
“Very good. Imperative sentences are used to issue orders
or directives, or make demands. In this type of sentence
the main verb is usually the base form.
This an exception to the rule that matrix clauses (a clause
that contains a subordinate clause) are always finite. Here X+Clam+Thor+E=exclamatory
are some examples:

 Do the right thing always.

 Obey your parents.
 Keep your promises always.

Tag questions can sometimes be added onto the end of

imperative sentences. “Exclamatory, Sir!”

 Do your homework, will you?

 Send me an e-mail soon, won’t you?
 Buy some milk, will you?

“Give us some examples please.”

EXCLAMATORY SENTENCES:

“Now, let’s go ahead and discuss the fourth type of

sentence. I will be posting another set of pictures in the
board and let’s see if you can guess the hidden word. “The sentence ends with an exclamation
point.”

“We are trying to express a strong emotion,

Sir.”

The student will give examples.

“From these pictures, what word have you formed?”

“Very good. The first type of sentence is Exclamatory.”

“Now let’s go back to the fourth set of titles of the song.”

Oh, holy night!

Help!

Stop! In the name of love!

Can you please tell me how this sentence is constructed

“That’s correct. When we use this punctuation mark what

do we normally imply/”

“That is correct. Exclamatory sentences show strong

emotions. They end with an exclamation mark. For
example:

 You look so beautiful!

 What an honest boy you are, Mark!
 This is the loveliest gift I have ever received!

“Please give another example class.”

E. Generalization

“That was very good class. Now let’s remember that

sentences have different types according to function. Now
let’s see if you can still remember them. I will show
different pictures to you, you will create a sentence
depending on the type I will ask you to use. then explain
why the sentence is a Declarative, an Interrogative, an
Imperative or an Exclamatory. Let’s start.”

F. Application
