I. 10 IMPORTANT TAKE-AWAYS FOR COVID 19 HOME MANAGEMENT

(10 POINTS)

# TAKE-AWAYS

1 Homecare may be considered as a last resort or an option if there will be inadequate

capacity to cater the COVID positive patients in the hospitals.

2 Base on the WHO, those who are asymptomatic, no difficulty of breathing, has a
respiratory rate of not less than 30 cpm, O2Sat that’s equals or above 94%, as well as
those without comorbid are qualified for Home care

3 Those who age 60 and above, obese, those who have hypertension, diabetes, chronic
kidney disease, chronic lung disease, smokers, immunosuppresed, cancer and cardio
vascular diseases are at high risk for COVID-19.

4 If there are two infected individuals that are at home, they can share one room for
isolation.

5 Quarantine and Isolation may be used interchangeably however they do not have the
same meaning. Quarantine will be for those who are well but they have been in contact
with a positive person (14 days quarantine). On the other hand, Isolation is for those
who tested positive and instructed to be away from people or household members.

6 Day 14 of quarantine doesn’t signify that you can go out, rather it is on the 15th day.

7 The caregiver should be 50 below years old, healthy, and without underlying medical
conditions.

8 Some symptoms of Covid-19 are runny or congested nose, dry cough, diarrhea, fever,
headache, myalgia, nausea or vomiting, fatigue, absence of smell and taste, sore throat,
and shortness of breath.

9 Proper hydration, enough rest, healthy foods, OTC drugs only will be allowed to be
taken by the patient.

10 Some equipments needed are pulse oximeter to monitor the O2Sat, BP monitor, digital
thermometer to monitor the body temperature, and also glucometer for those who have
diabetes.

II. AS A CHN, WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING HOME CARE

MANAGEMENT? (10 POINTS)

“This pandemic had brought so much catastrophe

We were covered by a nightmare like a canopy
Yet we are still in hope, other country became an epitome
Filipinos are still in query, when will it be? ”

-Mangilit, Ayessa Laine B.

As I continue to listen to the information about performing home care to a

positive household member, I am overwhelmed with the information given because it
slowly corrects a lot of my misinterpretations. With this thought I have realized what
about those who are not in the same field as I am, what about those who are illiterate,
those who don't know who is at most risk? and what about those ordinary Filipinos
who don't understand quarantine vs isolation? I have come up with our importance as
future CHN nurses, to make things clear for the community and them to easily
comprehend these protocols and instructions thus this will elevate the population that
will adhere. If we remain steadfast to what we know today maybe like me CHNs have
misinterpretations, it is important to know the proper home care so we will be able to
deliver accurate information to those individuals in the community.

I have had an experience where one of my relatives was very overwhelmed

with her positive swab test results, she kept on asking me on what to do to alleviate
the difficulties she is experiencing, physiologically and emotionally at home. We
couldn’t educate without enough knowledge about EBPs, during that time COVID
was still new to me and so I do not have enough information on the proper
interventions to be done and so what I did is I referred her to a more expert and a
professional nurse. With this, I have reflected that Home Care is the most
fundamental information that we have to learn because people around us trust what
we say. After all, we are nurses. Secondly, in the current situation of our country,
hospitals are exceeding their hospital capacity and so most of the positive patients
who are trying to be admitted to the hospital were rejected due to inadequacy of space
for them rather they were advised to do home care and consult via telemedicine. As a
CHN who will either be providing direct care or health education to the community,
home care will be our first line of defense for the situation that we have and so, we
were expected to share and provide appropriate and accurate home care to our client.

It is very saddening to watch the news these days or to just open your social
media account to see those Facebook friends changing their profile picture with a
candle-lighted, plain black, or a photo of their loved ones to manifest their grieving
hearts. On the other hand, it is also heartbreaking to see those posts where hospitals
are trying to build tents because the population of those who need tertiary care greatly
exceeds the bed capacity. After watching the video, I have realized how important our
role will be when we become Community Health Nurse in alleviating where we are
right now.
