OBSERVING

1. Uses one or more senses to observe objects or events.

2. Makes quantitative observations that describe shape, color, size and texture using descriptive words.
3. Uses tools like hand lens, microscope, and telescope to observe objects and phenomenon.
4. Uses measuring tools like balance, ruler, meterstick, graduated cylinder, beaker, thermometer, and
stopwatch to make quantitative observations.
5. Uses appropriate units of measurement.

There are two types of observation-Qualitative observation and Quantitative observation.

Tools for Scientific Investigation
There are other tools and equipment that you may need when doing your scientific
investigations. These includes the following:

Test tubes are containers for heating small amounts of

liquids. A test tube rack is used to hold test tubes in place.

An alcohol lamp is used to heat materials.

A test tube holder handles test tube or vial when heating or

transferring it to another place.

A flask is used to contain liquids and to measure their

volumes.

A beaker may also be used for containing and measuring the

volume of liquids.

A graduated cylinder is used in measuring the volume of

liquids.

Directions: imagine that you are in Boracay beach in Aklan. What are the things you find
around that place? Study the picture and answer the following questions that follow.

State five qualitative observations and five quantitative observations about the picture.

Qualitative observations Quantitative observations

People often complain about their weight when they step

on a weighing scale. Parents tell their children how tall they
have grown after measuring them with a meterstick or a Objectives

tape measure. Are these statements accurate? In science.  define length, mass, and
exact observations about height, length, and weight are volume
gathered by measuring. You can gather quantitative  identify measuring tools
 use tools to measure
observations about a material using measuring tools. Here
properties of materials
are some tools used in measurement. Distance or length is
measured using tape measure, meterstick, and ruler. Units
like millimeter (mm), meter (m), and kilometer (km)
describe distance or length.
