Assignment 1 – Individual 10%

Question 1

Figure 1 shows the dimension of a bushing feed through insulator type. The bushing is cylindrical,
which consists of 4 thin layers of metal sheets between them. Each Layer of 𝒂, 𝒃, 𝒄 and 𝒅 are
functioning to improve the dielectric strength of the bushing. Calculate the length of 𝒍𝒃 and 𝒍𝒄 by
assuming the maximum field strength in both sheets is the same magnitude and determine the
maximum field strength value (𝑘𝑉/𝑚).
(10 Marks)

Figure 1

Bushing parameters:
𝐷# = 25 𝑚𝑚; 𝐷$ = 36 𝑚𝑚; 𝐷% = 45 𝑚𝑚; 𝐷& = 60 𝑚𝑚
𝑙& = 15 𝑐𝑚
𝑉#& = 𝒘𝒙𝒚𝒛 × 10 𝑉

Note:
𝒘𝒙𝒚𝒛 × 10 𝑉 = (𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑡 4 𝑑𝑖𝑔𝑖𝑡𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟) × 10 𝑉
For example, if matric no. is 181271234 then 𝒘𝒙𝒚𝒛 × 10 𝑉 = 1234 × 10 𝑉 = 12.34 𝑘𝑉,
if matric number is 181270004 − 5 then 𝒘𝒙𝒚𝒛 × 10 𝑉 = 45 × 10 𝑉 = 0.45 𝑘𝑉.

Question 2

Figure 2(a) shows a solid dielectric with an internal cavity that has the dimension of
1 𝑚𝑚 × 4 𝑚𝑚 (height × width). Both cavity and the material are cylindrical shapes. If the
voltage in the cavity complies with Pashen’s Law, using the graph of breakdown voltage (𝑘𝑉)
versus pressure-gap in the 𝑚𝑚 − 𝑏𝑎𝑟 unit as shown in Figure 2(b), determine the inception
voltage of discharge when the pressure in the cavity is 𝒘𝒙𝒚𝒛 𝑚𝑏𝑎𝑟.

Figure 2(a)

Figure 2(b)

Note:
𝒘𝒙𝒚𝒛 𝑚𝑏𝑎𝑟 = 𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑡 4 𝑑𝑖𝑔𝑖𝑡𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟
For example, if matric number is 181271234 then 𝒘𝒙𝒚𝒛 𝑚𝑏𝑎𝑟 = 1234 𝑚𝑏𝑎𝑟,
if matric number is 181270004 − 5 then 𝒘𝒙𝒚𝒛 𝑚𝑏𝑎𝑟 = 45 𝑚𝑏𝑎r
