ACTIVITY 2

Name: Michael Rivera Date:

Section: BSEE SEP 4B Exercise No.:

I. SUMMARY

Students act as engineers by specifying the power plants to build for a community.

They are given a budget, an expected power demand from the community, and different

power plant options with corresponding environmental effects. Guided by a worksheet, the

students work through the hypothetical real-world scenario to arrive at recommendations

II. LEARNING OBJECTIVE

After this activity, students should be able to:

1. Define renewable and non-renewable energy

2. List some renewable and non-renewable energy sources

3. Use what they learn about energy sources to act as engineers and decide best power

plants for a (hypothetical) small community.

POWERING HYPOTHETICAL COMMUNITY

I. INSTRUCTIONS

The village of hypothetical community needs power. The community has a mall, a school, a

sports stadium, and a hospital. Table 1 shows how much power each one needs.

II. QUESTIONS

Now that you know about the community, complete the following questions:

1. Based on Table 1, how much total power (MW) does the community power plant have to

supply? 50MW would be needed by the community

You can pick combinations of the power plants in Table 2 to add up to the total power

needed in Question 1. Each power plant costs money, and some power plants give off

emissions (pollution) and some do not.

You have a total of P250 million pesos to spend

2. Fill in the table below with your power plant choices to power the necessary services

listed in Table 1. (Note: You do not have to use all the rows below.)

3. What is the total energy (power) production of your power plants? 50MW

4. What is the total cost your power plants? P200million pesos

5. Do your power plants give off emissions (pollution)? Yes

What might that pollution do to the community? Pollution can cause harmful illness and can
make human sick. It may cause fatal diseases and also it contributes to global warming.

6. How much money do you have left, after buying the power plants? P50 million pesos

7. If you did not spend all the P250 million on power plants, what will you buy with the
money left over (see Table 3)? Explain.

I would put the money on the maintenance of the power plants that I have chosen.

Having a powerplant itself is not enough to provide lifetime energy, proper maintenance should be

done to avoid extra expenses in unexpected repair or replacement.
