1.0 PURPOSE

 This method statement is applicable for Installation of all the HVAC Duct Install- Base like Air
Terminals (Grilles, Diffusers & Registers), Sand Trap Louvers, Volume Control Damper,
Motorized Volume Control Damper, Fire Damper, Smoke Damper, Combination of Fire- Smoke
Damper & Motorized Fire-Smoke Damper for the project as mentioned in the Specifications &
Approved Shop Drawings.

 The purpose of generating this method statement is to define the procedure & work sequence for
the correct practices to ensure that Installation of HVAC Duct Install-Base is performed safely,
efficiently and in accordance with UCTC, ENPPI & Saudi Aramco standards/ checklists,
Manufacturer requirements and job specifications for the Installation of HVAC Air Terminals,
Dampers through the guidelines contained herein so as to ensure that the job execution complies
with the requirements of the contract specification & approved shop drawings to which will serve
for the intended function to the satisfactory level for all applicable areas of the project.

2.0 SCOPE
 The scope of this method statement is to ensure the correct Installation of the HVAC Duct Install-
Base. This procedure is to be read in conjunction with the relevant ITP, outlining the responsibility
and the quality verification to be performed by various parties.

 This method statement covers all processes related to Installation of HVAC Dampers like Volume
Control Dampers, Motorized Volume Control Dampers, Fire Dampers, Smoke Damper,
Combination of Fire-Smoke Damper & Motorized Fire & Smoke Dampers and also shall cover
the Air Terminals Installation like Grilles, Diffusers, Registers, Louvers & Sand Trap Louvers in
line with project requirements as indicated in the Approved Shop Drawings, specifications &
manufacturer’s instructions.

5.0 RESPONSIBILITIES:
5.1 Project Manager
 The work progress shall be carried out as per planned program and all the equipment’s required to
execute the works shall be available and in good condition as per project planned.
 Specific attention is paid to all safety measures and quality control in coordination with Safety
Engineer and QA/QC Engineer and in line with PSP and PQP.

5.2 Construction Manager


 Construction Manager is responsible to supervise and control the work on site.
 Coordinating with QA/QC Engineers, Site Team & Foremen for all activities on site.
 Control and sign all ITRs before issuing to Consultant approval.

5.3 Site Engineer


 The method of statement to the system shall be implemented according to the project specifications
and approved shop drawings.
 Provision of all necessary information and distribution of responsibilities to his Construction team.
 The work progress shall be monitored in accordance with the planned work program and he will
provide reports to his superiors.
 The constant coordination with the Safety Engineer to ensure that the works are carried out in safe
working atmosphere.
 The constant coordination with the QA/QC Engineer for any works to be carried out and initiate for
the Inspection for the finished works.
 He will ensure the implementation of any request that might be raised by the Client
 Efficient daily progress shall be obtained for all the equipment and manpower.
 He will engage in the work and check the same against the daily report received from the Foremen.
 The passage of all the revised information to the Foremen and ensure that it’s being carried out
properly.

5.4 QA/QC Engineer (HVAC):


 The monitoring of executions of works at site and should be as per the approved shop drawings and
project specifications.
 Ensure ITRs and MVRs are being raised for activities in timely manner and inspected by the Client.
 He will follow and carries out all the relevant tests as per project specifications.
 Obtain the required clearance prior to Client inspections.
 Should acquire any necessary civil works clearances and coordination.
 QA/QC Engineer will assist the Client Engineer/ Inspector during Inspection.
 Check & ensure work is completed prior to offer Client for inspection.
 Coordination with site construction team.
 He will assist the Client Engineer/ Inspector during the inspection.
 Ensure all works have been completed prior to raise inspection to the Client.

5.5 Site Foreman


 The carrying-out of work and the proper distribution of all the available resources in coordination
with the Site Engineer on a daily basis.
 Daily reports of the works are achieved and coordinated for the future planning with the Site
Engineer.
 Incorporate all the QA/QC and Safety requirements as requested by the concerned Engineer.
 Meeting with any type of unforeseen incident or requirement and reporting the same to the Site
Engineer immediately.

5.6 Safety Officer


 The implementation of all safety measures in accordance with the HSE plan and that the whole work
force is aware of its proper implementation.
 The implementation of safety measures is adequate to maintain a safe working environment on the
work activity.
 Inspection of all the site activities and training personnel in accident prevention and its proper
reporting to the Construction Manager and the Project Manager.
 The site is maintained in a clean and tidy manner.
 Ensure only trained persons shall operate the power tools.
 Ensure all concerned personals shall use PPE and all other items as required.
 Ensure adequate lighting is provided in the working area at night time.
 Ensure high risk elevated areas are provided are barricade, tape, safety nets and provided with
ladders.
 Ensure service area/inspection area openings are provided with barricade, tape, and safety nets.
 Ensure safe access to site work at all times.

5.7 Store Keeper (SK)


 Responsible for overall Store operations in making sure to store the material delivery to the site and
keep it in suitable area that will keep the material in safe from rusty and damage.
 One who will acknowledge the receiving of materials at site in coordination with QA/QC &
concerned Engineer.

7.0 PROCEURE
7.1 General Requirements
 All the materials received at site shall be as per the approved technical material submittal and to be
inspected upon receipt & approved by the QA/QC engineer prior in proceeding with the installation.
Any discrepancies, damages etc., should be reported to the supplier for rectification or replacement
& to be removed from site immediately.
 All construction/inspection/testing works shall be carried out in accordance with the specifications &
to be done by qualified Mechanical Engineers and shall be checked and approved by HVAC
Subcontractor Construction Manager along with QA/QC Engineer.
 Contractor has to clarify the procedure for material delivery to the site through consultant Engineer
at site.

7.2 Material Transport/ Delivery


 AT, VD, MVD, FD, SD, CFSD, MFSD & STL are normally shipped & despatch for goods
condition and carefully loaded in containers with crating / boxing. Hence, in case of transit damage,
supplier must be informed immediately.
 Special care must be taken to ensure that units are offloaded from containers. Rough handling can
result in damage of Control Handles, Links, Springs, Blades, Frames, Actuator Connecting Rod,
Etc.
 All the received units shall be checked & inspected to ensure that it is complying with the approved
material submittals prior to site storage.

7.3 Storage on Site Store


 To ensure that AT, VD, MVD, FD, SD, CFSD, MFSD & STL deterioration of the does not occur
during storage, it is recommended to store the equipment in covered conditions that are protected
from weather elements and accidental damage.
 AT, VD, MVD, FD, SD, CFSD, MFSD & STL shall be protected with plastic/ tarpaulin or shall
not be removed from the shipping package unless otherwise instructed to do so.
 All packages for the equipment reaching the site shall be identified as per package list.

7.4 Sequence of Installation for the HVAC Duct Install-Base

7.4.1 Safety
 All site safety rules & regulations shall be complied with.
 Supervisors will deliver tool box talks, relevant to these activities to all operatives involved in
the installation and shall be recorded.
 All operatives will be equipped with minimum personnel protective equipment; hard hat,
coveralls, safety boots, safety glasses.
 The persons using cleaning fluid and solvent cement have to wear hand gloves.
 Ensure only qualified personnel shall install, test & commissioned the equipment.
 During Testing & Commissioning, (which will be done on later stage) display warning sign
boards necessarily provided and barricade the area whenever necessary.
 Only competent, experienced & trained personnel shall perform all the required activities stated
in this method statement.
 Ensure that all operatives fully understand the method of these activities.

7.4.2 HVAC Dampers

7.4.2.1 Pre-Installation Procedure for HVAC Dampers


Before commencement of installation activity, the supervisor must ensure that:
 Prior to installation, ensure that the HVAC Dampers & its accessories have been
inspected & approved by the Client. Record shall be available when required.
 Ensure all shop drawings related to the work have been approved by the Client.
 Ensure that all works & clearances from other systems have been completed prior to
start installation.
 Move the HVAC Dampers at site by hand, Pick- Up or fork lift (if required). Only the
required quantities of HVAC Dampers shall be brought to site to preserve the quality of
the dampers.
 HVAC Dampers installations shall be manufacture’s recommendation.
 Ensure all duct supports have been properly installed & distances are as mentioned in
the specification.
 Ensure all duct insulations have been properly fix & cleared by the Client.
 Ensure that all HVAC Damper are constructed with Galvanized Steel Sheets
 Motorized HVAC Dampers shall be supplied with actuators.
 Check the HVAC Damper’s schedules for proper dampers locations within the building.
 Visually inspect the damper for any damages.

 Lift or handle HVAC Dampers using sleeve or frame. Do not lift the HVAC Dampers
using blades, linkage, actuators or jack-shafting. Do not drag, step on, apply excessive
bending, twisting or racking.
 Do not install screws in damper frame that will interfere with unexposed blade linkage
and prevent damper blades from opening and/ or closing.
 HVAC Dampers must be installed into the duct opening square and free of twist or other
misalignment.
 HVAC Dampers must not be squeezed or stretched into duct or opening. Out of square,
racked, twisted or misaligned installations can cause excessive leakage and/ or torque
requirements to exceed damper/ actuator design.
 HVAC Dampers actuators must be kept clean, dry & protected from dirt, dust and other
foreign materials prior to and after installation.
 HVAC Dampers must be sufficiently covered as to prevent overspray if wall texturing
or spray painting will be performed within 1.5m of the damper. Excessive dirt or foreign
material deposits on damper can cause excessive leakage and/ or torque requirements to
exceed damper/ actuator design.
 Suitable access for actuator’s maintenance must be provided for damper inspections &
servicing. Where it is not possible to achieve sufficient size access, it will be necessary
to install a removable section of duct.
 All electrical or pneumatic connections to the HVAC Dampers actuators shall be made
in accordance to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Only qualified personnel shall
perform this activity.
 Verify power requirements before wiring the actuators.

7.4.2.2 Installation Procedure for VD & MVD


 Cycle the dampers by hand before installation to ensure freedom of movement.
 The damper sections must be attached together with the required sheet metal screws,
nuts, bolts, tacks or spot welds & steel pop rivets.
 Attachments must be spaced at a maximum distance from corners. Attachments must
be made on front face and back face (air entering and air exiting side) of damper
sections.
 Duct opening or opening square shall be larger than damper dimension & should be
straight and level.
 If no holes are present in frame, drill the required size of holes and fasten frames
together with the required size of bolts & nuts.
 Use shims between dampers frame & duct opening or opening space to prevent
distortion of frame by fasteners holding it in place.
 Brace at every horizontal mullion and vertically brace a distance required of damper
width for strength. Dampers with high velocity may require more bracing.
 If damper actuator is to be mounted out of air stream, the extension pin should extend
approximately 100mm beyond the frame.
 Dampers section assemblies must be completely square and free from racking, twisting
or bending. Measure diagonally from upper corners to opposite lower corners of each
section.
 Do not twist or bow. Mount damper plumb in the opening.

 Damper blades, axles & linkage must operate without binding. Before system
operation, cycle dampers after installation to assure proper operation. All sections
should open & close simultaneously.

7.4.2.3 Installation Procedure for FD, CFSD & MFSD


 The fire dampers shall be installed in accordance to the manufacture’s
recommendation
 All fire dampers must be inside the wall openings so that when fire and excessive hot
air pass through it, the fusible link melt and releasing curtains to close the air steam.
 In case that fire damper cannot fit inside the wall openings fire damper can be
installed before or after the wall provided that the fire damper must be touch the wall
to ensure heat transmission
 Access door shall be standard sizes and opening shall be provided on each fire to
reach blade in order to reset the fire damper after it is activated. Refer to approved
standard detail drawings
 The location of fire damper shall be specified in the approved shop drawings.
 Type of duct connection to fire damper sleeve shall be breakaway connections.
 Adequate space or opening is provided for restoring the damper (when done
manually) in its normal operating condition.
 Retaining angle shall be secured to sleeve on 8 “centers. Retaining angles shall not
be fixed to the wall.
 Fire / Smoke damper shall bear a label from recognized by testing laboratory (such
as UL) or to be tested in accordance with the requirement of project specification.
 Clearance of dampers sleeves within a wall shall be 1/8 “per foot of width. (or height)
 Length of the sleeve extending beyond the wall or floor opening shall be six inches
on one side and sixteen inches on the opposite side.

7.4.3 HVAC Air Terminals

7.4.3.1 Pre- Installation Procedure for HVAC Air Terminals


Before commencement of installation activity, the supervisor must ensure that:
 Delivered Grilles, Diffusers, Louvers have been inspected & approved via MIR by
the consultant prior to installation at site.
 All Grilles, Diffusers, Sand Trap Louvers shall be checked against the relevant
schedules prior to installation & ensuring that they are of the correct size, type,
model etc. as indicated on the approved shop drawings & material submittal.
 All Installations Duct works have been completed & approved by the consultant.
 Ensure that the area shall be relatively clean, free of major airborne dust and
contaminants (moisture, oil, etc.)
 Relevant documents or certificates shall be presented at the time of inspection if
required by the Client. (Coordination Drawings, Reflected Ceiling Plan, etc.)
 Permission to start or Civil Clearances prior to installation has been given by the
main contractor.

 All relevant Shop drawings for the installation of the equipment shall be available
& approved by the consultant. No installation shall be done without Approved Shop
Drawings.
 Installation activities shall only commence when all associated works by the Civil
has been completed.
 Safe access shall be provided by the Main Contractor thru Work Permit in
coordination with the Safety in charge at site.
 Check the exact location of installation for the Grilles, Diffusers, Sand Trap Louvers
as per the approved shop drawings.
 Check for other services, making sure that there is no interference between each
service & adequate access to work and for future maintenance can be maintained.

7.4.3.2 Installation Procedure for Grilles, Diffusers & Sand Trap Louvers
 Ensure plenum or terminal boxes openings are compatible for Grilles, Diffusers,
Louvers to be installed.
 Ensure that plenums are correctly acoustically lined.
 Install sub-frame in the duct opening as manufacturer’s recommendation and ensure
that Grilles, Diffusers, Louvers shall be installed correctly as per the direction of
flow.
 Prepare Grilles, Diffusers, Sand Trap Louvers by installing sealing material to the
internal side of the mating flange, carefully locate Grilles, Diffusers, Sand Trap
Louvers into sub-frame and locate locking screws and tighten until correct level and
the alignment is attached.
 Make sure that screws should be fixed into a metal / wooden frame which sits in
counter sunken holes through border.
 If the aperture is in masonry, the hole locations should be marked, then drilled and
plugged to give more positive fixing.
 Concealed rear bracket fixing is for use when a hidden fixing is required but the
installation prohibits the use of clip fixing.
 For fixing of Grilles, Diffusers, Sand Trap Louvers without dampers, the Grilles, 4
way Diffusers & Sand Trap Louvers are positioned into opening with metal/ wooden
frame screws are fixed through the brackets fixed into the stack of Grilles, Diffusers,
& Sand Trap Louvers to the frame holes.
 For Grilles, Diffusers, Sand Trap Louvers with dampers, the dampers can be fixed
with Grilles, Diffusers & Sand Trap Louvers border by clip or rivets and damper is
fixed by screwing to the duct opening. Otherwise the damper alone can be directly
screwed to the duct chute.
 After final alignment, carefully tighten the Grilles, Diffusers, & Sand Trap Louvers
until airtightness is achieved.
 Ensure that all Grilles, Diffusers & Sand Trap Louvers are left in closed position and
protection shall be provided until handing over.
 Ensure that each installation of Grilles, Diffusers, & Sand Trap Louvers is
undamaged, clean and screwed tight prior to inspection.
 After all installation has been done, raise immediate inspection for approval
