Multicultural Lesson Activity

1. Lesson Objectives:

·Subject observable objective: The subject I selected is science and climate. This
activity and lesson would be for 6th-7th grade. The Bloom objective that would fit best is
Analysis: Student distinguishes, classifies, and relates the assumptions, hypotheses,
evidence, or structure of a statement or question. Students will analyze and be able to
recognize climate and weather patterns to better relate to different cultures having to
survive in that weather.

· Multicultural goal: The multicultural goal that relates is number five, “Reverence for
the earth, increase awareness of our global dynamics.” Bloom Objective: “Student
translates, comprehends, or interprets information based on prior learning” Students will
comprehend what it takes to survive in the climates of different cultures.

3. Instruction- learning Process: Create a detailed outline of the


multicultural activity following the teaching design below:

· Do First: We would begin the lesson by watching a video about climate zones to refresh on
the different types of climates.

· Mini-lesson: After sharing our prior knowledge of cultures and climates I chose an article to
look through and discuss with students. This will help them to start thinking about what it would
take to survive in a harsher climate.

· Guided Practice: Next, students will get 10 minutes to discuss with their classmates the types
of climates there are and the cultures that may live in them. This will also be the time for
students to begin brainstorming the shelter they will build and the list of food they will have. I
would be walking around making sure the students stay on task and fully understand the lesson.

· Independent Practice: Students will need to utilize this time to do independent research and
begin making a drawn-out rough draft of their shelters to turn in at the end of class. They should
be implementing what was taught in the lesson into their draft. Students will then need to build
their shelters as homework and submit by the due date. Students will build a model of a
shelter they would have in the climate of their choosing. The students will need to
research to find out what would survive in their climate. Students will present their
shelter with a list of food they could grow in the climate.
· Exit Slip: Students will turn in their rough drafts so I can get an understanding of what they
may or may not have retained from the lesson.

5. Reflection:

What specific subject concepts, skills were taught.? Students were taught about climates as
well as cultures that live in said climates. Students will have an increased awareness of what
other cultures go through and the conditions that some may live in.

What specific multicultural knowledge, skills were achieved? Students will learn about
different cultures while participating in this lesson. They will gain a deeper understanding of how
land and climate affect different cultures and the ways they have adapted.

Evaluate the level of student engagement in the teaching-learning process: Students will
engage in discussions and participate with the whole class as well as the teachers. Some
students may have a difficult time understanding the concepts and may require additional time
to go over the materials.

List the strengths and weaknesses of the lesson plan:

Strengths: Students will gain a greater understanding of the world around them and how their
climate may have an effect on them as well as other cultures.

Weaknesses: Students may have a hard time relating to the topic and a hard time
understanding the concepts. They may also have trouble building their shelters.
