THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM [1983 UN]

Women have been undergoing a state of injustice and treatment that


can be closely associated with taken-for-granted individuals for they have
been doing their utmost best to become steadfast and ready with everyday
life of a woman, a worker, a wife and a mother. These roles play a very
significant influence towards the growth of the people around them, due to
the intense workload they need to cater and the lingering insufficient wage
they can muster from their jobs. With the lack of beneficial amenities and
the seemingly large responsibilities they have, most of their energy is being
expended for the benefit of others which consequently brings about the
deterioration of their well-being and beauty.

The Impossible Dream makes its point about the need for men to share
the burden of housework and child raising through humour and superb
visuals. A superwoman runs her home and manages her three children
with clockwork efficiency while also working at a factory. Meanwhile, her
slob of a husband piles up the dishes in the sink and slumps in front of the
television. The wife does tremendous work, the woman is paid lesser even
though they work the same hours. The husband orders the wife to do stuffs
for him even though he’s doing nothing. The husband turning off the TV
while the wife is still watching also shows that the man is in control. The
man (employer/manager) rebuked the woman for her work and in public.
The daughter helps in the chores, while the son plays or do as he please. .
The man whistled to the woman passing (Minor act of) sexual harassment.

It seems to me that the wife desired for something that is in contrast of


the reality they had. She dreamed for equality, harmony, and a better life
which is unachievable in her current situation. I think that it highlights
the double work-load that many women face, and how some women may
feel like they are stuck with an impossible dream.

There should be justice and equality in both genders because in a


family the partners [husband and wife] is equally trying to put food in the
table.
The tasks or responsibilities should be divided equally as possible;
Support each other Marginalization Equal job opportunities regardless of
gender; Strengthen laws about wages; Standardized pay subordination
Be considerate to others or treat them with considerations; Both men and
women should be involved in decision-making; Psychological abuse or
Subordination Ensure that employers are actively encouraging ALL
employees to progress; Clear policy on discrimination Gender stereotyping
Equal treatment; Have “family job” and not a “girl/boy’s job”, expands ones
horizon.

Facts cannot be denied that no matter how hard we try to eliminate


gender bias, we tend to practice such unknowingly. At home, chores are
divided. Girls are tasked to do the dishes, cleaning, etc. while boys are
assigned heavy tasks. As the eldest girl in the family, I am also expected to
take care of my younger siblings and cousins. Boys and girls are actually
treated differently in the family. Even in society gender problems still exist.
In the workplace, men are favored over women. Women are promoted less
often than men and only a few women are assigned in executive-type roles.
Harassment or catcalling is also prevalent, especially in the street. This
limits women’s freedom and they tend to feel less secure. Also, women are
treated as inferior beings but are expected to do multiple roles in the family,
at work, and even in society. These problems existed a long time ago but
are still present today.
