STATE NURSING COUNCIL

INTRODUCTION-Registration in state nursing council is very necessary for every


nurse. It is necessary to be registered in order to function officially as a professional nurse.
Registration councils are functioning in all states of India and they are affiliated to INC.
 The State Nursing Councils are constituted in respective States.
 The main purpose is to regulate better training for nurses.  
 The State Nurses and Midwives Council were established in 1948 under the provisions
of Nurses and Midwives Act with the purpose of “Better training of nurses, midwives &
health visitors”.
 It works as an autonomous body under the Government of respective states,
Department of Health and Family Welfare.
DEFINITION-
“A state nurse’s registration council is the council that maintains a register of names of
professional nurses. These names are also put into the India nurses register maintained by
INC, nurse’s, midwives and health visitor’s .All degree holding nurses also have to get the
registration in state council.”

SALIENT FEATURES-
1. Provision for autonomous body, comprising majority of nurses and is endowed with
decision making powers.
2. Compulsory registration for all nurses and midwives practicing within the state.
3. Provision for nurses & midwives to elect their own representatives.
4. Power to regulate nursing education through prescribed curriculum and to enunciate
examination policies.
5. Provision for recognition of educational institutions of nursing and withdrawal of such
recognition is necessary.
6. Different types of basic & post basic nursing training programmes are conducted by some
state nursing council.
IMPORTANCE OF REGISTRATION-
 The registration is very important as regard to its purposes.
 Registration system helps maintain the high standard amongst the professional nurses.
 Registration serves as legal protection to the nurses and also to public as it prevents
unqualified and incompetent persons practicing nursing.
 The state nursing council can exert official control of standards of nursing practice
through the registration system.

FUNCTIONS OF REGISTER-
1. Registration.
2. Conduct of examinations.
3. Changing Surname.
4. Inspection of training Institutions and granting recognition.
5. Maintenance of registers related to different category of nurses.
6. Change of address for trained nurses.
7. Issue of duplicate certificates if original is lost.
8. Additional Qualification registration for up-to –date statistics for higher qualifications.
9. Renewal of registration for every 5 years.
10. Reciprocal registration.
11. Abroad verification.
12. Publication.
13. Construction of syllabus.
14. In-service education programme.

Procedure of registration:-
The institution where the student nurse has received education initiates the registration
process after successful completion of the recognized educational course

The SNC issue diploma to the nurse. After that the application for registration is filled
through a form which has to be duly filled along with the certified copy from the training
institute stating that she/he has complete the course successfully

This form has to be send to the register with the required process fee & a copy of diploma.
With the registration process, the name of the nurse is entered in the state register maintained
in the council

Registration certificate is issued to the nurse which bears the registration number ensuring
that her/his name has been register.

RENEWAL OF REGISTRATION-
For nursing registration renewal, you need to provide the following documents:
1. Printout of online application form.
2. Challan/DD of fees.
3. Original registration certificate.
4. Educational certificates.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITY –
 To co-ordinate & bring a uniform standard of nursing education.
 To verify the eligibility requirements of the students before each examination
 To arrange for conducting examination & issuing certificates to successful candidates
.  To prepare the calendar of events at the beginning of each academic year.
 To appoint the examiners before each examination.
 Enforcing the Nurse Practice Act and nurse licensure .
 Accrediting or approving nurse education programs in schools and universities.
 Responsible to maintain the register in prescribed manner for Nurses, Midwives & Health
visitors is called Indian nurses register.
 Developing policies, practice standards & administrative regulations.
 Regulation of its own colleges & affiliated institutions.
 Conducting inspection & granting permission for admission.  Conducting examination &
announcing the results.
 Conducting the Graduation, Post-graduation & Doctoral programmers’.
 Ensuring faculty welfare and development.
 Ensuring student welfare & development.
 organizing various programmers’ such as book exhibition, job fair, seminars, conferences,
inter college competitions, sport meets, etc.
CONCLUSION-
It is a independent & recognized as a body who can make status & prescribe low for trained
nurse & prospective nurses who are undergoing various nursing programmers’. Although it
is an independent body but it has to obtained approval from state government for all the lows
passed by it & decision making. This council help to maintain a register of the names of
professional nurses.
