7.6 Method of Working in Filling Section

Generally, for filling, the following operations are followed:-

• Engineer to check and approve setting out.
• Topsoil will be stripped off up to the filling limits with minimum 150mm
topsoil layer. If the ground level is within 1.5m from the formation
level, the ground will be compacted using suitable type of machinery.
• Operation / Method: Suitable excavated material shall be loaded to
haul area of fill by using dump truck. The dump truck shall be
unloaded a short distance away from the area of fill and later be push
to the area of fill by using back pusher or dozer. In this way the
compacted layer beneath will not be damaged by the dump truck.
• Once the surface is approved for filling, suitable materials are placed
and spread out using back pusher and / or motor grader and / or
bulldozers. End or side tipping to form embankment will be avoided.
• The earth filling shall be carried out layer by layer and every filling
layer shall not exceed 300mm or otherwise approved loose thickness
as specified in the specification.
• Compaction to be carried out by suitable vibratory/ tamping foot roller.
• The filling material moisture content shall be within +1% / -4% of the
optimum moisture content (OMC).
➢ If the moisture is too high, the material shall be scarified and
dried prior used for filling work.
➢ If the filling material is too dry; wetting of the material by
spraying with water will be carried out.
• Compaction shall be carried out until the filling compaction achieved
at least 90% degree of compaction of Field Density Test (FDT)**.
• Filling at Sloping Area: To ensure that the slope edge is properly
compacted filling will be carried out to extra width of about 0.6 meter
and after the fill has reach 5 meters height and turf immediately.
• aQUICK CHECK: Before and during filling works, check the following:-
➢ Before filling works, the area should be ready free from
unsuitable or combustible material and well compacted
using suitable type of compactor machine

• Piles shall be driven by using hydraulic hammer type by follow the
Calculation of Setting for Pile Injection – Please attached the calculation
with this submission.
• Positioning Pile Machine: Piling base machine shall be placed
manoeuvre to align with the piling points.
• Placement of the Pile: the initial pile segment is pitched using a low
speed hydraulic winch and then the pile is placed into the guide or
chamber of the piling machine.
• Pile Jacked Hydraulically into the Ground: When the pile ready to
start, pile jacked in to the ground hydraulically.
• The pile injection should be maintained straight in line at all the times.
In common soil condition, every single stroke will able to jack in
penetration of 6 metres.
• Extension Pile (Mild Steel Sleeve): When the initial pile segment
jacked in reached close to ground, operator shall stop jacked in and
re-opened chamber door to place the second piles into the chamber.
• Pile shall be jointed by using mild steel pile sleeve; where the sleeve
is placed on to the top end of the installed pile. An extension pile is
lifted up and placed into the chamber, which is then properly aligned in
a vertical axis with the installed pile.
• The piston rod will jacked the two piles into the sleeve until both ends
meet at the centre plate.
• Continue Pile Jacking Process until Set: Resume jacked in after
checking the pile joint completed and satisfactory done.
• Pile jacking process repeated until the required resistance to pile
penetration is achieved, or the required pre-determined penetration
depth is reached. The setting load registered through the pressure
gauge mounted on the control panel.
• The jack-in pile is said to have achieved the 'set' when it has visually
ceased to penetrate further under the required jacking load and
maintaining period.
• AQUICK CHECK: During pile driving (hydraulic hammer), check the following:-
➢ Check the pile position always in the correct alignment
➢ Check the pile joints satisfactorily done
➢ Check and monitor gauge mounted on the control panel
and stop when it achieved “set” and reached to the hard
