S88 Yaw System - Troubleshooting and Corrections

1. Scope:

This document is applicable for S88 (2.1MW) yaw system troubleshooting and correction method for the
following variants of yaw systems.

a) V1 yaw system
b) V3 yaw systems.

a) V1 yaw system – In this type of yaw system top and bottom yaw components having hexagonal caps for
providing pretension to the polyamide pads. Radial yaw components have the threaded bolts and lock nuts
to provide pretension to the polyamide pads. (Refer Photo-1and Photo-2).

2.1 Contamination at gear rim polyamide travel area:
If Wtg’s are stored at port and site for long period before commissioning, this may cause the corrosion, dust
accumulation at polyamide travel area. This contamination will lead to increase in friction and may cause the
vibration and noise during yawing operation.

2.2 Lack of Lubrication:

If the CLS (is faulty, empty or not functioning properly, this may cause the lack of lubrication to the polyamide
/ yaw component. This lack of lubrication condition may cause vibration and noise during noise operation.

S88 Yaw System - Troubleshooting and Corrections
3.1.2 Manual Cleaning of yaw system:
3.1.2.1 Wtg must be stopped and manual yawing should be possible.
3.1.2.2 Yaw the nacelle, clean dust and old grease available on yaw gear rim with lint free cloth and Simple
green (or any non toxic non inflammable industrial grease cleaner) . Cleaning to be done at the side of
the nacelle from where the gear rim is accessible. Do the yawing in sectors and collect dust and old
grease till the complete gear rim is clean.
3.1.2.3 Apply the fresh grease at top, bottom and radial polyamides through grease nipples provided on
pretension bolts / Caps (Approximately 10 grams per grease nipple).

3.1.3 Pressure Cleaning of yaw system:

3.1.3.1 Wtg must be stopped and manual yawing should be possible.

3.1.3.2 Yaw the nacelle; remove the metal particles with 6mm round telescopic magnet. Metal particle cleaning
to be done at the side of the nacelle from where the gear rim is accessible. Do the yawing in sectors
and collect the metal particles till the complete gear rim is clean.
3.1.3.3 Fix the Skirting (Refer drawing-M381.0163) in tower to Nacelle gap for avoids spread of dirt and grease
on the tower shell (Refer Photo-9 and Photo-10).

yaw unit each side of this segment – Advice to mark the cap with numbers. e.g. 1, 2, 3…
3.3.2.2 Remove all the lubrication hoses from top axial caps at less gap segment.

3.3.2.10 After carry out the above process recheck and record the gap between the Yaw base and gear rim.
Ensure that minimum requirement gap (1.5mm) is achieved. if gap is not achieved then again carry out

2.4 Cause – Radial clearance / radial floating of nacelle due to looseness of radial yaw
components.
3.4 Troubleshooting and Correction – Checking and correction of radial gap (as
described below).

3.4 Checking and correction of radial gap:

3.4.1 Inspect the backlash of the all three yaw drives as per ‘TSG/OPS/MEG1/GL-26’
3.4.2 If backlash of the all yaw drives is not within limit then inspect the gap between yaw gear rim ID &
distance plate OD (Refer Photo-28).
3.4.3 Deviation between minimum and maximum measured gap should be within 1 mm.
Example - if minimum value is 4.50 and maximum is 5.50mm –this is Ok.

S88 Yaw System - Troubleshooting and Corrections
3. Troubleshooting and Correction for contributing factors :……………(Continued):
2.5 Cause – Yaw drive mounting bolt looseness.
3.5 Troubleshooting and Correction – Checking and tightening of yaw drive mounting bolts
(as described below).

3.5 Checking and tightening of Yaw drive mounting bolts:

3.5.1 Remove the bolt from yaw drive mounting connection with yaw base. If yaw drive mounting bolts are with
M18 - 8.8 grade bolts then replace the same by M18 - 10.9 grade bolts.
3.5.2 Clean the bolts and tapped holes of the yaw base with clean cloth and brake cleaner (Spray cleaner into
tapped hole). Remove all dirt, debris and grease.
3.5.3 Apply Molykote (Mos2) on the bolt thread part and insert the bolts into the yaw base.
3.5.4 Tension the bolt by using the socket and the torque wrench; applying the 310Nm toque for M18 -10.9
grade bolts and 440Nm torque for M20 – 10.9 grade bolts. Refer the torquing sequence as per Photo-30.

Photo-30

3.5.5 Mark a line starting on each bolt going to the yaw drive flange, with a red paint pen.
3.5.6 Repeat the above procedure for the rest of the bolts in the other two yaw drives.
3.5.7 Check the backlash of all three yaw drives are within limit as per procedure ‘TSG/OPS/MEG1/GL-26’.
3.5.8 Apply the grease on the gear rim and yaw drive teeth.
3.5.9 Yaw the nacelle and inspect the yaw drives operation is smooth.
3.5.10 Ensure no jerks and vibration during yawing, also note down the current of each yaw drive as per below
table.

2.6 Cause – Improper yaw brake gap setting.

3.6 Troubleshooting and Correction – Yaw brake gap setting (as described below).

3.6 Yaw brake gap setting:

3.6.1 Yaw brake gap should be set between 0.3 mm to 0.45 mm. However it is recommended to set the gap at
lower side i.e. 0.30mm. Please refer the procedure ‘WD00262’.
