Statement of Purpose

Maruf Rahman (MSc applicant for fall 2022)

I am applying for the master’s program in Computer Science at Baylor University for the fall 2022
semester and also expressing my interest in this field of study and motivation to get admitted to the
desired program. I enjoyed the journey of my bachelor years as a student of Computer Science and also
developed a boundless desire to explore this field and decided to pursue higher study in this subject. I
firmly ponder myself as an eligible candidate for this program, and I also satisfy all the requirements to be
enrolled in this program.

I have earned my Bachelor’s degree from Comilla University, Bangladesh, with a CGPA of 3.36 out of
4.00 in December 2017, and currently working as a Software Engineer in a renowned software
production company in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

In higher secondary school, I had the option to choose between “Biology” and “Computer” as an elective
subject. Most chose “Biology” as it provided a wider variety of choices for future academic and
professional endeavors. Nevertheless, I knew my interest and what I wanted to study. So, I chose
“Computer”, and I am still satisfied with my decision.

During my freshmen year in BSc, I was acquainted with the fundamental concepts of programming and
its diverse branches of applications. I was astonished by the extent of applications of programming and its
impact in the current world. It felt like I have a magic wand in the tip of my hand, and I can create
anything I want. I learned structured programming, object-oriented programming, data structures, and
discrete mathematics in the first few semesters. At that moment, I had already understood that Computer
Science is a huge field of study, and it has so many branches ranging from the theory of computation,
compiler design, artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, database management systems. Advanced
courses were considerably challenging as well as an eye-opener for me because these courses have urged
me to discover the subject even more and grew an intense enchantment toward Computer Science. My
undergraduate project was a restaurant ERP system integrated with an intelligent agent, which was able to
predict the sales and sort food items based on weather, events, and previous data. Moreover, it was
convenient to use and facilitated a wide range of reports. A few restaurants currently use this software.
Apart from this, during my last year, I did a freelancing project on data scraping and analysis using
python. Besides, I was an active member of the Programming and took part in several programming
contests, namely ACM ICPC Regional to enhance my problem-solving skills. I had also worked with the
Robotics Club, where I had been a mentor in various workshops. I had an opportunity to serve as a UTA
in various courses like Structured Programming, Object-Oriented Programming, and Database Systems.

So, I have prepared my attention to studying Computer Science which would serve my thirst for
understanding the branches of it that I am interested in. A Master’s degree from Baylor University will
undoubtedly ornate my career. The career opportunities after the completion of this course are variegated.
This program offers its students to work on industrial projects which will make the candidates ready for
the job market. I want to excitedly grab this opportunity. Currently being in the profession (a Software
Engineer) and as a student of Computer Science and Engineering, I have a plan to continue my career in
the IT sector. However, interdisciplinary research allures me to its beauty as it can produce impactful
solutions to real-life problems. After my higher study (MS), my target is to make an impact on Fourth
Industrial Revolution in Bangladesh by creating software solutions that address the need of the time. As
predicted, by 2030, technology will be ubiquitous in my country. There will be an immense necessity for
quality software and security. My goal is to implement and keep improving the software product. I aim to
generate ideas, do research, and produce potential output. For that, I would join my country's software
industry or I would be an entrepreneur, where I can utilize the lesson of my higher study and experience.
My ultimate career goal is to create and/or manage products that solve existing problems of my country
like, information management, cyber security, and digital awareness, etc. Moreover, if I consider that I
need more expertise in a certain field; I may get my Ph.D. and enhance my capability to solve more
critical software or industry problems. I believe, the key to life is change. So, if all things fall in place I
have an intention to pass my knowledge by serving some university students later in my life. I firmly
consider that this program will make career opportunities wider, and it would also prepare me well for
both a scientific and a professional career. With all the experience and interest listed, I see myself as an
eligible and motivated candidate for this program, and I look forward to hearing an affirmative response.
