Looking Back to Your Lesson

A. Let us recall the laws of exponents. Complete the given equations.

Let a ≠ 0, we define the following.
1. a0 = ______
2. = _____
Theorems. Let x and y be the rational numbers, then

3. ax . ay = ______ 5. (ax)y = ______ 7. = _____

x y x
4. a ÷ a = _____ 6. (a.b) = _____
B. Identify which of the following are exponential equations and inequalities.

Brief Introduction:
To establish equality between two exponential expressions, you need to do
something similar to showing if a function is one to one.

One-to-one Property
If two powers with the same base are equal, then their exponents must be equal.
For b > 0 and b ≠ 1, if bx = by then x = y.

3
Example 1:

Solve the equation 32x = 81.

Solution:

First observe that 81 is a power of 3. Hence, 32x = 34. According to One-to-one property, you
can equate the exponents of 3 from both sides of the equation and solve for x. Thus,
2x = 4

x = 2.
Thus, the solution to the exponential equation 32x = 81 is x = 2.

Example 2:
Solve the equation
Solution:

First observe that is a power of or as the quotient of a power rule. To

make it with the same base as () get the reciprocal of , that is ( by applying the
laws of exponent or negative exponent rule. Thus,

By One to one property we can now equate the

exponents of from both sides of the equation and solve for x. Thus,
x = - 2. This is the solution to the given equation.

Example 3:
Solve 163x + 4 = 42x + 3

Solution:
Find the solution/s to the equation as follows.
163x + 4 = 42x + 3 Given.
2 3x + 4 2x + 3
(4 ) =4 Express 16 as 42.
42( 3x + 4) = 42x + 3 Use the power of a power rule.
4 6x + 8 = 42x + 3 Applying the distributive property of multiplication over
addition.
6x + 8 = 2x + 3 By One to one property we can now equate the exponents.
6x – 2x = 3 – 8 Combine similar terms, by transposition method.
4x = -5 Simplify

x = Divide both side by 4.

The solution to 163x + 4 = 42x + 3

is x = As an exercise, check if x is not an
extraneuous solution to the equation.

4
Example 4:
Solve the equation

Solution: Both 9 and 3 can be written using 3 as the base.

(2x – 3)(x + 1) = 0
2x – 3 = 0 or x + 1 = 0
x = or x = 1

Exponential inequalities can be solved using the following property.

Property of Exponential Inequalities

If b > 1, then the exponential function y = bx is increasing for all x. This means that bx < by if
and only if x < y.

If 0 < b < 1, then the exponential function y = bx is decreasing for all x. This means that
bx > by if and only if x < y.

Tips: You should be careful when solving exponential inequalities such as bm < bn. The
resulting direction of the inequality (m < n or m > n) is based on whether the base b is
greater than 1 or less than 1.

Example 5:
Solve

Solution:
Rewrite 10,000 as 104
5x + 2 > 4 Property of Inequality for Exponential Function
5x > 2 Subtract 2 from each side
x> Divide both sides by 5.
Thus, the solution set is (

Example 6:
Solve
Solution:
54(x – 7) 5-3 (2x - 4) Rewrite 625 and 1/125 as 54 and 5-3
4(x – 7) -3(2x – 4) Property of Inequality for Exponential Function
4x – 28 -6x +12 Apply the distributive property of multiplication over
addition.
4x + 6x 12 + 28 Transpose terms to place like terms on each side of
the inequality.
10x 40 Add like terms
x Divide both sides by 10
x 4 Thus, the solution set is [4, .

5
Example 7:
Solve the inequality ( .
Solution: Since , then we write both sides of the inequality with as the base.

Since the base < 1, then this inequality is

equivalent to x+5 6x (the direction of the inequality is reversed)
5 6x - x
5 5x

1 x Thus, the solution set is [1,

Activities
Solve the following equations.
x–1
1. 16 = 64
2. 3 = 272x + 4
x+2

3.
Solve for the following inequalities.
4. 42x+7 322x -3
5.

Remember

One strategy to solve exponential equation is to write both sides of the equation as
powers with the same base.
When solving exponential inequalities, you should be careful when solving
exponential inequalities such as bm < bn. The resulting direction of the inequality (m < n or
m > n) is based on whether the base b is greater than 1 or less than 1.

Check Your Understanding

Solve the following equations.

1. 100x = 10002x – 6

2. 162x -3 = 4x + 2

3. 7x+4 = 49 2x – 1

6
