Project Name
Bouncing Counter

Learning Objectives:
In this project, the student should be able to design and construct a 2-digit bouncing
counter using JK Flip flops.

Statement of the Problem

Design and construct a 2-digit bouncing counter using JK Flip flops.

Scope and Limitation

In this project, the circuit design must include the basic gates such as the OR, NOT or
Inverter, and AND gates. Two seven segment display should also be utilized for the output
side. Furthermore, a JK type of flip flop should be used and the clock time must be the same
in every transition. Lastly, the wiring should be structured with a colour restriction of
orange and a combination of blue/white which means that no diagonal connection will be
used in the circuit design.

Description of the Project

This project is a 2 digit bouncing counter that uses JK flip flops as the main components.
This also uses combinational logic circuits for the complete operation of the bouncing
counter. The bouncing counter will count from 00 – 99 – 98 – 00 which will be outputted in
the two seven segment display. JK flipflops were cascaded to have the up counter and a
combinational logic circuitry for down counter. Another JK flipflop will be utilized to
perform simultaneously an up and down counting.

JK flip flop is a gated RS flip flop with clock circuitry as an input. Clock input prevents
invalid output condition which occurs in RS flip flop. This project will utilized a negative-end
triggered active low JK flip flop. The JK flipflop also serves as the main component of this
circuit.

2. Seven Segment Display

The seven segment display configuration is shown below.

Figure 4: Segment Display Figure 5: Pin Diagram

The seven segment display physical appearance is shown below.

Figure 6: Physical Appearance of 7 Segment Display

The Seven-segment consists of 7 LEDs arranged in a way that allows constructing a
display of the numbers of (0-9). It has 10 pins assigned as follows:

3
1. 7 pins act as the Vcc for the 7 LEDs (1 pin for each LED, assuming that we are dealing
with common cathode seven segment display).
2. 1 pin is the Vcc for decimal point display at the lower right corner.
3. 2 pins represent a common ground to all the LEDs

There are 2 types of seven-segment, these are “common anode” and “common
cathode”. In common anode seven segment, Vcc is common for all the LEDs and each has a
different pin for the low voltage (that is ground). The common anode is utilized in this
project.

have 7 outputs.

Recommendation
In this project, I would recommend to try various applications of bouncing counter
where it can be used in real life situations. I would also recommend doing the project by
group to lessen the complexity of the construction of the circuit as well as the cost. For
future projects, I would also recommend to use the IC components that will meet the
desired outputs and will lessen the complexity of the projects. I would also recommend
exploring and being creative in creating bouncing counter.
