Title: Eradicating Ignorance: Educating the Children about People

with Hearing Impairment

Goals and Objectives
Goal: To promote awareness about people with hearing impairment particularly to those
children who are still ignorant about them.
Objectives:
1. Creating a presentation about people with hearing loss, so that children can visualize
what are the speakers talking about.
2. Make them have an activity about sign language. This will make the small session
enjoyable.
3. Make them watch a movie in which the protagonist has hearing loss. It will make
them see the point of view of a person having a hearing impairment.
4. Encourage the children to become open towards the people with disabilities and in
eliminating the discrimination about them.
5. Ask them about what they learned. Make them have a small reflection.

Description: We've noticed that most children are still ignorant about persons with
disabilities. We have seen children laughing and making fun of persons with
impairments in our own lives. According to what we've seen, there's a person with the
hearing loss going around our neighborhood, and the kids have begun to insult him and
call him insults he doesn't deserve. This person with a hearing disability is attempting to
communicate with the children. But his voice is so hazy that it comes across as
amusing, and he has tried using sign language, but the children are imitating him rather
than attempting to grasp what he is saying. Another example is when I was in primary
school, and I'd seen children begin to flee when they spotted a deaf person. And it
makes me sad to think about that while I travel back in time.

Project Activities
Symposium
The purpose of this symposium is to educate children about those who have hearing
loss. It will help them discover several things and address their misunderstandings
about persons who has a hearing impairment. The symposium will cover the history of
hearing impairment, their struggles with their problems and how they've overcome them,
the tools they're employing to live in peace, the causes of hearing loss, and what
phrases should be used to refer to them, especially the dos and don'ts.
Movie Marathon
We’ll happily conduct a movie marathon for the children about people with hearing
impairment. This will help them feel the point of view of people with hearing loss. This
will also make the session enjoyable so they’ll have the energy to listen and understand
the message of the speaker.

Sign Language Activity

We’ll happily conduct an activity about sign language, where the speakers will teach
them some basics of sign language that can help them communicate with people with
hearing loss. It also includes the alphabet, and for sure, the children will enjoy this kind
of activity that’ll give them the energy to listen more and think about what’s the right
thing to do in communicating with people who have a hearing impairment.

Reflection
The speakers will ask them what they have learned about the discussion. They will also
ask the children what they will do from now on if they have a friend or classmates with
disabilities that are shy to communicate. The speakers will ask some engaging
questions that will help them be at ease and think about their answers carefully. After
everything, we will give the children snacks as a thank you for participating in the
symposium.

Symposium, Movie Marathon, Sign Language Activity, and Reflection
Results
The children learned many things about hearing impairment.
They have enjoyed the symposium and other activities.
They have learned some basic sign language.
Purpose
The purpose of this advocacy project is to eliminate children's misconceptions about
people with hearing loss. We want to properly educate children so that they are not
afraid of persons who have hearing loss and will not make fun of them if they see them.
They can also correct their mistakes by sharing their expertise with their peers and
classmates.
