FIRM-UP

With the current setting, you have already seen, read or heard different issues about COVID-19, ABS-CBN
shutdown, Anti-terrorism Bill, taxes for online sellers and a lot more. Thanks to these media outlets that keep you
informed! But have you tried asking yourself if the data that they are giving contains the truth? You, being a responsible
citizen must be able to choose your sources of information well. It has to come from a trusted source. Surely, if you have
the correct information, it will help you become a knowledgeable person and not easily persuaded by other people’s
opinion unless supported with factual evidences. Now, let us try to know more about media by reading the following
paragraphs:
 Media (medium)
Refers to the communication outlets through which we made known to the public different important data like
news, music, movies, education, promotional messages and other data. It includes physical and e-newspapers or
online newspapers, magazines, billboards, radio, televisions, telephone and internet.
 Print Media
Based on the Oxford Reference, print media is defined as any written or pictorial form of communication
produced mechanically or electronically using printing, photocopying, or digital methods from which multiple
copies can be made through automated processes. This is the oldest type of media that we are still using now.
Examples of print media are: newspapers, books, journals, magazines and reports
 Non-print media
Is a means of informing the people without using paper or print. This type has become very
common to all people both as a tool in the educational process and as means of spreading information all
throughout the world.
Examples of print media are: TV and radio, Internet, Mobile devices or cellphones, Social media,
Podcast, Website and Video

One of the important components of learning which helps to retain information is review or practice. It connects
to new knowledge and skills. It measures student’s performance and how well the students retained learning.
Summarizing is an important study skill that require the reader to have a firm understanding of the text that he/she has
read.
 Summary
Is a shortened version of a text, piece or a gist, this contains only the main ideas or key points of a passage or text.
When summarizing a text, remember the following:
 Base your summary on the original piece.
 Keep your summary short.
 Use your own wording.
 Refer to the central and main ideas of the original piece.
 Read with who, what, when, where, why and how questions in mind.
 Avoid putting in your opinion about the issue or topic discussed in the original piece.
There are several strategies that you can consider when summarizing a text and these are as follows:
1. Read the entire text
2. Identify the title, author, and text type.
3. Describe the central ideas.
4. Identify key supporting details.
5. Avoid opinions and unimportant details.
In orders to better understand a text in summarizing, it is important to learn the different types of text structure:
 Classification-division- sorting information into topics and categories
 Chronological-discussing things in order
 Problem and Solution- presenting a problem and offering a solution
 Compare and Contrast- discussing similarities and differences
 Cause and Effect- explaining a cause and its results

Now that you already have a brief knowledge and understanding about the topics in this module. Let’s see if you
can apply this knowledge through accomplishing the activities prepared in this segment. You can now start this learning
section but, keep on thinking the focal questions below:
1. How can print and non-print media helps you in researching information?
