LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS

English 7 – Lesson 3: Active and Passive Voice

I. Introduction

In writing, it is usual when you want to tell about an action, the writer will
highlight the action taken by the subject. The action becomes more important
than the performer of the action.

It is useful to know the two types of voices in sentences: the active and passive
voice.

This Learning Activity Sheets will help you identify the active and passive
voice in a sentence, and it will help you in changing active to passive voice
and vice versa. Enjoy learning.

II. Learning Competency

These Learning Activity Sheets were designed and written with you in mind.
It is here to help you master the skills in using the passive and active voice
meaningfully in varied contexts (EN7G-III-c-2).

III.Objectives
After going through this Learning Activity Sheets, you are expected to:

1. identify the two voices of verbs;

2. use the passive and active voice meaningfully in varied contexts;
3. change active voice to passive voice and vice versa.

1
IV.Discussion

There are two types of voice: active voice and passive voice
Active Voice is used to show that the subject of the sentence is performing
or causing the action.
Example:
1. Mark Pingris threw the basketball before the buzzer.
Passive Voice is used when the subject is the recipient of the action.
Example:
1. The ball was thrown by Pingris.
Form of the Verb in a Passive Voice
ACTIVE VOICE
1. When the subject does or “acts upon” the verb, the sentence is said to be
in the active voice. These examples show that the subject is doing the verb’s
actions.

 The grandfather (subject) gives (verb) the money to the boy.

 Ryan (subject) revealed (verb) the reality about social discrimination
in social media.
 The social media influencer (subject) accused (verb) the girl for
plagiarism.
 The judge (subject) pounded (verb) the gavel.
 My brother (subject) threw (verb) a small change in an aluminum can.

PASSIVE VOICE
2. When the subject receives the action of the verb, the sentence is said to be
in the passive voice. These examples show how the subject--verb
relationship has changed.

 The money is given by the grandfather to the boy.

(active verb - gives: passive verb - is given)
 The reality about social discrimination was revealed by Ryan in the
social media.
(active verb - revealed: passive verb - was revealed)
 The girl was accused by the social media influencer for plagiarism
(active verb - accused: passive verb - was accused)
 The gavel was pounded by the judge.
(active verb - pounded: passive verb - was pounded)
 A small change was thrown by my brother in an aluminum can.

2
(active verb - threw: passive verb - was thrown)

Because the subject is being “acted upon” (or is passive), such

sentences are said to be in the passive voice.

VII. Reflection
Read the passage carefully.

A CONFESSION OF A LOST LAMB

(Adapted)
I was twelve when I had my first taste of poor man’s cocaine or shabu.
I enjoyed every minute of it. No words can capture my feeling. I did never know
it would totally destroy me.

I was really hooked on it. It gives me vitality and a high biorhythm. My

life seemed dull without it.

I was in Grade 7 when it all started. I didn’t care about anything. I forgot
my studies. I was skin and bone.

6
I could do anything I wanted because my parents were separated. They
didn’t have anything to do with my life. I was left with my grandmother who
would readily say “yes” to all my demands.

It was my best friend who introduced me to vices−especially drugs.

When I became delinquent my parents suddenly noticed me. They

talked but gave up on me after many attempts. They said I was too hot to
handle. I brought dishonor to my family. My parents thought that all their
support would go for naught−so they abandoned me again.

It was a car accident that brought me back to my senses. It was bound

to happen to my addiction to all kinds of vices. I thought I would die. I was
hearing whispers which brought me into shivers. I was a devil’s disciple as
some people called me.

After that accident, I left home, I went through the withdrawal process.
Soon I was rehabilitating myself. It was not that easy. I had no money to see
professional help. I did it on my own. I had many sleepless nights. I had no
body to rely on. I worked to support myself. I was that determined to
straighten up my life.

Finally, I had the 360-degree turn. I was at peace with myself and the
world.

I now have an indescribable feeling of happiness because I have

changed. I do not want to go back to my old world.

I know there are many youngsters out there who are now in the same
dilemma−groping in the dark, wanting to change, wanting to be accepted, and
wanting to be longed. It’s never too late. I was there for a long time but I
succeeded in getting out of that web of evil. I was almost lost!

No matter how hard and painful it is to look for the light, don’t give up.
No one is there to help you except yourself. Just have a burning faith in the
living God. You can start all over again.

Underline the verbs in the following sentences then write if it is in the

active and passive voice.

__________1. I enjoyed every minute of it.

__________2. He was given vitality and a high biorhythm by the cocaine

and shabu.
__________3. My best friend introduced me to different vices.

7
__________4. The different vices gave him an indescribable feeling.
