work with our tamariki.
Committing to this programme would mean attending two
training mornings and working with the children for an hour a
day Monday through Thursday.
The programme will run for four weeks in term two and five
weeks in term three. The programme currently runs at Stoke
school and all volunteer tutors have found their involvement
very rewarding. If you, or someone you know may be inter-

Student Council news
As mentioned in last weeks newsletter we have registered for
the Richie McCaw Chopper challenge to raise funds to support
the Westpac Summit Rescue Helicopter Trust . Link http:/
www.richiemccawchopperchallenge.co.nz
Operated by 16 charitable trusts nationwide, many of the
choppers act as flying intensive care unit s providing a dedicated 24/7 service. From a defibrillator for a
premature baby to full life support systems, they are equipped to deal with almost any situation.
The following is a personal account by a Central student showing how vital the services of the rescue helicopter
were to her family.

It was Christmas 2007. We were in Spring Creek staying at my Aunties. We were asleep in the lounge marae style.
My Aunty Kathy woke up because my uncle wasn’t breathing properly. She tried to talk to him to wake him up.
Mum woke up and then she woke Dad I was really scared. I thought my Uncle wasn’t going to make it.
My cousin Terence called the ambulance and my Uncle went to the hospital. He had another serious problem and
he needed to get to Wellington Hospital fast. Th e West pac helicopter came to get my uncle and take him to
Wellington. I think if the helicopter hadn’t come my uncle would not be here.
