a. Reading of the text
Ruth was crying. She just came from school. Her dress was dirty and
her shoes were wet.
“Why are you crying?” Mother asked.
“I could not find my money. I dropped it when I jumped over the
canal. Maybe the water carried it away,” Ruth said.

Show a real stone and a rock.
Let them describe each one’s size. Ask them which one is bigger or
smaller.
Say: Here is a rock. This is an enormous rock? What can you say
about this rock? What is another word for enormous? (Bigger than
usual, huge gigantic)
Show a picture of a cottage and a mansion. Let them describe each
one’s size and ask which is enormous.
b. Motivation
Show a picture of a carrot.
Let them describe what they know about carrots using the table
below.

During Reading
a. Listen as I read the story “The enormous carrot”. Read the story aloud.
b. After reading a page or several pages, ask questions to enable the pupils to
interact with the text.
c. Refer the pupils to LM Activity 176A for the copy of the text. Note the questions to
ask after reading about the indicated sentences.

Let students answer the Motive questions asked earlier.

3. APPLICATION
GROUP ACTIVITY
Make four groups and each group do a specific task.
Group A.
Draw the animals in the story.
Group B.
The hen asked help from other animals to pull up the enormous
carrot. Role play the scene when the four animals helped together to pull out the
enormous carrot.
Group C.
Here are some pictures of the events in the story. Arrange them as
they happened in the story by numbering them from 1-5.
IV. ASSESSMENT
In a whole sheet of paper, write a 3-5 sentenced-paragraph that tells what the story,
“The Enormous Character”, is about and the lesson you learned from it.
