MODULE 1: The Child and Adolescent Learners and Learning

Principles

GET STARTED

1. What will they possibly become? Expound on

your answers.
I believe that Emma and John’s developmental change will take
place during their childhood even in adulthood.

2. What then is development?

Based on my observations, Emma and John will be facing life-
span approach. This approach believes that even in adulthood
developmental change occurs as it does during childhood.
Development is incorporated with physical, intellectual, emotional
and social growth.

3. Will the three-year old John be able to do all that seven year old
Emma can do? Why or why not?
In my own opinion, not all the things that a seven years old Emma
can do will be able to do by a three years old John. There are
development that they can only learn or experience as their age
increase by.

4. Will there be anything common in the pattern of development of

Emma and John? If yes what?
Yes there will be, like the development is life long, development is
plastic, development is multidimensional and etc. But basically,
they are different in their physical development.
5. Will there be differences in their development, e.g. pace or rate
of development? What and why?

For me yes, because they have opposite gender. There are a lot of
differences on how they develop their selves especially in physical
development.

6. Will the process of development take place very fast or

gradually? Expound on your answer.
In my own opinion, it will take place gradually because as we grow
older we enter to another stage of life basically we can also learn new
knowledge and new experiences that may cause of our development
in different aspect.

7. Do you believe that Emma and John will continue to develop

even in adulthood? Or will they stop developing in adulthood?
I believe that they will be both continue to develop even in adulthood.
WHAT DO YOU KNOW

1. “Growth is an evidence of life” or “development is an evidence of

life.” What does this mean? What does this imply to a person’s
development?

This statement states that if we are growing definitely it is a sign

that we exist. As long was we have life, it means growing and
development.

2. Define adolescence.

a. Process or state of growing to maturity

-In this stage, a girl/boy little by little will become more independent
to build a matured decision for his/herself or for a specific situation
in a specific scenario in a real world.

b. Process of growing from adulthood to old age

-In this stage as we face adulthood, age of 20 or 21 we will be

physically matured. Early adulthood people in this stage learn how
to firm both in friendship and in love of course establish a career.
Middle adulthood, mostly people in this stage we’re already raised
a family and strive to attain career goals. Followed by old age,
people start showibg the signs of aging, this stage defined as 65 ‘til
death, most of them we’re retired from their works.

c. When you get old

-When a person gets older usually they are already experiencing

the signs of aging like wrinkles, memory lose and etc. Most of
them are retire from their works and have no longer has a vision of
taking care of their younger members of the family.
d. When you are to old age a child

-Little by little, by the help of the elders we’ve learned new things.
We are dependent to our parents at this stage. Most of the child,
cannot give a right decision for his/herself, they really need the
consent of their parents.

ANSWERS (A)

Principles of Human Characteristics of Human

Development Development from Life-span
(NAEC, 2009) Perspective
a. All the domains of development Development is contextual
and learningphysical, social and
emotional, and cognitive are
important, and they are closely
interrelated. Children’s
development and learning in one
domain influence and are
influenced by what takes place in
other domains.
b. many aspects of children’s Development is life long
learning and development follow
well documented sequences, with
later abilities, skills, and
knowledge building on those
already acquired.
c. Development and learning Development is contextual
proceed at varying rates from
child to child, as well as at uneven
rates across different areas of a
child’s individual.
d. Development and learning Development is multidimensional
result from a dynamic and
continuous interaction of
biological maturation and
experience.
e. Early experiences have Development is plastic
profound effects, both cumulative
and delayed, on a child’s
development and learning; and
optimal periods exist for certain
types of development and learning
to occur.
f. Development proceeds towards Development is contextual
greater complexity, self-
regulation, and symbolic or
representational capacities.
Children develop best when they Development is contextual
have secure, consistent
relationships with responsive
adults and opportunities for
positive relationship with peers.
h. Development and learning Development is contextual
occur in and are influenced by
multiple social and cultural
contexts.
i. Always mentally active in Development is plastic
seeking to understand the world
around them, children learn in a
variety of ways; a wide range of
teaching strategies and
interactions are effective in
supporting all these kinds of
learning.
j. Play is an important vehicle for Development is multidimensional
developing selfregulation as well
as for promoting language,
cognition, and social competence.
k. Development and learning Development is plastic
advance when children are
challenged to achieve at a level
just beyond their current mastery,
and also when they have many
opportunities to practice in newly
acquired skills.
l. Children’s experiences shape Development is multidimensional
their motivation and approaches
to learning, such as persistence,
initiative, and flexibility; in turn,
these dispositions and behaviors
affect their learning and
development.
ANSWERS (B)

1. State five characteristics of human development from a life-span

perspective and their implications to child care, education and
parenting.

Characteristic of human Educational Implication to Child

development from a life-span Care, Education and parenting
perspective

1. Development is lifelong As long as a person is alive, he/she

can still learn new knowledge, new
lessons, new perspective in life even
new experiences that he/she may
use in his/her journey because
learning doesn’t stop in adulthood.
For me, it implies that the learnings
of an individual in terms of different
aspects like in education is never
ending. Learning is unstoppable as
long as we are alive but of course
we need a guide of our beloved
parents especially those younger
one’s. Learning is always visible to
everyone as long as we will take it in
a positive way.
2. Development is plastic For me it implies that an individual
can actually change as their age
increase by but good thing is we can
always change in a better way
through the help and guidance of our
parents at home and teachers in
school.
3. Development is It implies that learning and
multidimensional understanding some of the thinking
activities and stating our emotions to
those people who are close to our
hearts can help us to grow as an
individual still with the guidance of
our elders.
4. Development is contextual It implies that our environment is one
of the aspect of our development or I
should say development includes on
how we react on our society or those
scenarios that are happenings to our
surroundings.
5. Development involves For me it implies that the elders who
growth, maintenance and have been passed in that specific
regulation stage of development are the one
who’s actually giving advice to the
younger one’s. Their experiences
will thought the next generation so
that they cannot do the same
mistake like what they did before.
The elders will guide us to the right
path to become a responsible adult
in the near future.
2. “Growth is an evidence of life” or “development is an evidence
of life.” What does this mean? What does this imply to a
person’s development?
For me, it means that as long as you have life you’ll always undergo
development and growth. It implies that changes occurs during our
childhood to the old age, 65 years to death.
3. If your approach to human development is traditional, are the
characteristics of human development from life-span
perspective acceptable? Explain your answer.
Somehow it is acceptable in my own observation because we can
easily identify the development of an individual from birth to
adolescence but it will be little or gradually in old age.
