EXERCISE 1: Classifying Volcanoes as Active or Inactive
DIRECTIONS:
1. Check attachment #1: Map of the Philippines
2. Use it to plot the location of the listed volcanoes in table 1.
3. Assign colors for the volcanoes using your colored pens or crayons.
4. Then answer the guide questions found below the table.

Table 1: List of some volcanoes in the Philippines

Figure __. Map of the Philippines (Source: Gr. 8 LM, UPNISMED)
= volcano that has no record of eruption
Legend:
= volcano that has erupted 1 to 5 times

Guide Questions:
1. Are all the volcanoes found in the same location?
- No. They are found in different places in the Philippines.

2. What are these volcanoes that have no record of eruption? How will
you classify them?
- The following volcanoes that have no record of eruptions: Cabaluyan,
Cocoro, Pulang, Tamburok and Urot. These volcanoes that have no
record of eruptions are called Inactive volcanoes.

3. What volcano had the most number of eruptions? Least number of

eruptions? How will you classify them?
- Mayon volcano has the most number of eruptions (49 eruptions). While
Iraya volcano has the least number of eruptions (1 eruption). These
volcanoes that records of eruptions are called Active volcanoes.

4. Differentiate an active volcano from an inactive volcano.

- Volcanoes with a record of eruption within the last 600 years or erupted
10,000 years ago based on analyses of their materials are Active
volcanoes, while volcanoes with no record of eruption or have not
erupted for the last 10,000 years and their physical form is being changed
by agents of weathering and erosion through the formation of deep and
long gullies are Inactive volcanoes. In other words, Active volcanoes are
those that have records of eruption or have erupted recently; they are
likely to erupt again, while Inactive volcanoes are those that show no
record of eruption yet.
EXERCISE 2
A. DIRECTIONS: Identify the given descriptions below as cinder cone, shield cone,
or composite cone. Write your answers in the space provided

1) Cinder cone _____1. Has very steep sides.

_____ 2. Erupts most violently.
2) Composite cone
_____ 3. Has pyroclastic flow.
3) Composite cone _____ 4. Has the least eruption type.
4) Shield cone _____ 5. Is formed from many lava eruptions.
5) Shield cone _____ 6. Is named after their wide dome shape.
6) Shield cone _____ 7. Resembles an ancient warrior’s shield.
7) Shield cone _____ 8. Characterized by a circular cone of
hardened lava, ash and tephra around a single vent.
8) Cinder cone
_____ 9. The most common type and is also called
9) Cinder cone scoria cones.
10)Composite cone _____ 10. Formed alternate layers of ash and lava
and which is also known as stratovolcano.
