Exploring the Art of Boyboy Making
Objective: Investigate the evidence of chemical reaction appeared in boyboy making.
Materials: tiger grass (to be provided by the teacher), handle out of wood/bamboo, improvised brooming needle, improvised
wooden clamp, no. 18 tire wire, linesman’s pliers, drawing materials, activity sheets, etc.

THE ART OF BOYBOY MAKING

Known for its soft broom industry, the Municipality of Bagulin in the province of La
Union produces quality soft brooms locally known in Ilocano as "boyboy" or "walis
tambo" in Tagalog. Bagulin is situated at the interior eastern portion of La Union. It is
generally mountainous and forested. Due to its geographical location and cool
climate, plenty of tiger grasses, locally called “boyboy” grow within the vicinity. With
a 644-hectare tiger grass farmland, over 1.5 million soft brooms are produced each
year, harvested and handcrafted by 2,301 families. In addition, Bagulin became the
major supplier of raw materials to broom makers in Region 1 and the Cordilleras.
There are kinds of brooms that can be produced: The Solas and Señorita. Solas
or “deretsahan” make use of the stalks of the panicles as the handle, while the
Señorita’s or “Baguio City” handle is made of a wooden stick and wrapped with plastic
strips woven into a design.
Direction:
1. Draw chronologically the procedures to be followed in boyboy making.
2. Based on the activity and video on boyboy making, among of these processes,
identify which of them fall as physical change or chemical change.
3. Answer correctly the question based from your activity.

QUESTIONS:
1. Among the procedures in boyboy making, what falls on physical change? Why?

2. What procedures that can be classified as chemical change? Why?

3. Fill up with situations found at home to complete the table below.
