Other general guidelines and good practices for zoom calls (Good to have) Physical
arrangements:
1. Please choose a room or a place that is quiet and free from background noise and
disturbances for the duration of the MUN. Avoid any place where people are often
walking through or around.
2. Make sure the lighting is sufficient without being harsh. The source of lighting must not be
behind you. If in the position that you choose, there is insufficient light on your face, use
an additional source of light like a table lamp in front of you, but do not point it directly at
your eyes. During daytime you could sit facing a window. However, make sure that the
light source does not create a glare in your eyes. It should not be like a spotlight directly in
front of your eyes, or should not make looking at the screen difficult.
3. Let your background be clean and uncluttered. You are free to use a virtual background but
NOT a video background. Remember that virtual backgrounds often do not work well if
the
actual physical background is cluttered.
4. Try to wear a shirt/top that contrasts with your background. However, pure white or jet
black are generally not a good idea. They tend to create silhouettes.
5. Use a chair that you can sit comfortably on for the duration of the MUN. 6. Unclutter the
area around your laptop so that you have a place to keep a notepad or other stuff that you may
need for the MUN.
The Equipment:
1. Use a proper laptop or desktop for your MUN sessions. Mobiles and tablets are not
recommended. Apart from smaller screen size, it is also difficult to type into a chat or
navigate easily on a small device like a mobile.
2. Keep your laptop fully charged, particularly if your area is prone to power failures. It is
often a good idea to keep the power adaptor plugged in.
3. Make sure that you are positioned properly in the webcam frame and are facing towards
the webcam.
4. If there is ambient noise around you, it is a good idea to use a headset (headphones with a
microphone). Choose any type of model with a clear sound. More expensive ones are not
always better. Wired headsets are often recommended over wireless one for static setups
like these. If your surroundings are quiet and your laptop microphone and speakers work
well (with enough volume and clear sound for a speaking type audio stream, not music),
you could use them instead of a headset.
5. Close all unnecessary programs, apps and windows from your laptop and turn off
unnecessary notifications.
6. Disconnect as many other devices from your internet connection as possible so that your
laptop gets adequate bandwidth.
7. If possible, keep an alternate source of internet connectivity like a dongle or a mobile
hotspot ready to use in case the main connection fails. However, please remember that a
mobile hotspot is generally poorer than a wired broadband connection and therefore, a
hotspot should not be your first choice. The recommended bandwidth is 2Mbps or more.
