ACTIVITY 1:

 Go to www.realage.com
 Complete the questionnaire and find out what your real age is, relative to your chronological
age.
 Reflect on the factors that affect your real age. Make a list of these factors.

1. What are the factors that make physical age different from chronological age?
- The factor that makes physical age different from chronological age is that physical
age is a measurement of age based on various biomarkers. It is a number that can
change due to lifestyle and other health factors. Also, in physical age, it can shift and
change over time depending overall health condition of an individual. On the other
hand, Chronological age is the amount of time that has passed from birth to the
given date. It is the age in terms of years, months, days.

2. Give specific examples of the above factors.

- An example of physical age A 23-year-old male who doesn’t exercise only eats high-
fat foods, and has smoked five packs of cigarettes per day for the last 10 years,
person would have a physical age of greater than 26 years. The rationale of this is
because physical age varies depending on the person’s lifestyle, hereditary, nutrition,
habits, diseases or other health condition, and attitudes towards
- An example of chronological age “ A person who is 21 years this year will turn 22
next year.

3. Which of these factors are most important in individual aging? Why?

- In terms of physical age, the factors that are most important in individual aging are
lifestyle because it includes nutrition, exercise, habits, and vices. The other factor is
hereditary. If these factors are neglected and not being paid attention it can
deteriorate the overall condition of an individual. Thus, increase physical age.
Furthermore, taking these factors into consideration and attention, can help improve
our health, live longer, and understand how we age. likewise, in terms of
chronological age, it is important to know our current age to determine the timing of
adulthood, it is also essential to create a timeline as we grow in a lifespan.

ACTIVITY 2

Reflect on and answer the following questions:

1. When the majority of the population is above 50, would this lead to a more
conservative society?
- In my point of view, yes. If the majority of the population is above 50, it would lead to a
more conservative society. The people who are aged 50 and above, are the people who
are experienced and knows more about life. These people were in a society/generation
that imbibes into different customs, views, values, traditions, and beliefs compared to the
generation now. Older aged people may become more conservative in the sense that
their attitudes and values become more resistant to change this is because of their life
experiences and their generation before.

2. Would there be changes in concepts of retirement and economic productivity

under a demographic regime where a third of the population are 65 and above?
- Yes, If older people are living longer and they scope most of the population, there is a
greater need for sufficient pension savings to fund a longer retirement. There will be a
strain on social insurance programs and pension systems. In terms of economic
productivity, labor-force participation will likely decrease thus decrease economic growth
and productivity.

3. What are the possible implications of a future where young children are as rare as
old people are in current times?
- Some of the younger children may or may not carry on to different norms, beliefs,
values, and customs of the older aged.

ACTIVITY 3

Make a “Reflection Paper” based on the movie Magnifico (2003). It’s a Tagalog Movie about old age.

Magnifico, also known as Pikoy, is a young man from a village. He is a unique child who can positively impact the lives of
everyone he meets. He comes from a low-income family; his father (Gerry) works odd jobs, and his mother (Edna) spends her days
caring for Ikoy's sister (Helen) and grandmother (Magda), who has diabetes and pancreatic cancer. Ikoy is sweet and has good
intentions, which her father chastised, labeling him unintelligent in comparison to his wittiness and cleverness. He meets a bereaved
man who mother suddenly passed a way Mang Domeng who mourns for his mother; two fshop owners; the bad-tempered old woman
who runs the mortuary; his elder brother, who has a crush on a wealthy girl; his little sister, Helen, who has cerebral palsy; and his
grandmother Magda, who the family worries they will not be able to provide for her medicines and hospital bills. Also even her burial in
case she dies. Ikoy took on several of these responsibilities, including preparing a remedy for the mortician's ailments, playing
matchmaker for his love-struck brother, scheming to provide a burial gown and coffin for his grandmother, and negotiating a wheelchair
so he could take his sick sister to the carnival. Despite the adversity of his existence, Ikoy manages to find solutions to all of his
problems. On the night of the major carnival, all of his efforts paid off. Ikoy met someone whose life he changed suddenly. When he
was hit by a car and killed, everything changed. His family lamented his loss and placed him in the casket that Ikoy had created for his
grandma. His friends, relatives, and those he touched reflected on the time when he was kind.

I had seen snippets from the film Magnifico when I was a kid, but this is the first time I've seen the entire film. What I can tell is
that the film is a tearjerker; it made me cry like a river, and my eyes swelled up. Because of the film's excellence, the title is self-
explanatory. It takes place in a community where poverty, hopelessness, and melancholy are prevalent. I honestly didn't expect this to
be a wonderful film because I've always believed that Tagalog films aren't really good. But I was proven to be incorrect. This is one of
the most memorable, if not the most respectable, Tagalog films I've ever seen. It has had such an influence on me that I've been blown
away and started crying at times. The scene in which Pikoy has helped everyone in his town and made a difference in the lives of
others is my favorite piece of the film. Also, the scene at the carnival where he and his sister attended. Pikoy's despondent mother and
his grandma, who is gravely ill, were the parts that made everyone laugh. He brightened his sister's face by showing her one of the
happiest places on the planet which is the carnival. Magnifico demonstrated his affection for her sister by giving her a ride on his back
to make her happy. Pikoy's brother and his father, on the other hand, battled because he was courting a wealthy girl in his town, only to
discover that he was only using her because she and her family were wealthy. But the scene where Pikoy dies at the end is the most
reviled. I can see why he died; he is so kind and helpful, and after everything he has done, he has simply died. Why did he have to die,
especially because he is still so young? He won't be able to have children, go to college, or do anything else. Indeed, Magnifico is my
favorite character because he is an excellent representation of an outstanding citizen of a community who, despite their hardships,
never fails to achieve his objectives. He is an excellent role model for individuals who support their families in small ways to alleviate
their burdens in life. He is an example of faith and endurance who values his family above all else. The movie's concept was not difficult
to grasp. The story is simple, yet the message it conveys is profound and uplifting. Its symbolism was also remarkably accurate and
vivid in the film. He embodied everything God wants us to be: an innocent and loving child who never failed to remind everyone that life
was still lovely. Magnifico dies just as he crosses the street to reach the wheelchair in theSweet because we know that after a human
has served and completed his mission, God will bring him rest. This will also be the end of us all. After performing tremendous service
for God, we, like Magnifico, return home to him, to a world of eternal salvation and joy, free of pain and sin. He was simply an ordinary
boy who had a life filled with hardship and pain, but instead of surrendering to defeat, he chose to give love. The film depicts how one
loving heart may transform a person's life. Magnifico has conquered the challenges that his family has faced at such a young age. end.
It was bittersweet to see him pass away—bitter because he was such an example to his neighbors and friends, a Magnifico.

I think Mrs. Parel wanted me to create this reflection because this movie can serve as a simple explanation of aging. In the
film, there is a grandmother who is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The family knew that the old woman in the family will die soon
because of her disease. But then, here is Pikoy, a healthy, young bright boy who died before his grandmother. When it comes to death,
you’ll never know when it will happen. You can never tell when. A misconception about age is that if you are old and ill you’ll die soon.
While if you are young, death is very unlikely. The movie tells me otherwise. There is a line “ Kapag oras mo na, oras mo na.” which
means if it is your time to die, it will be your time to die. That is why we should not take a person for granted and we must cherish the
persons we have in our lives. This film has the impression of enthralling the audience with the constant presence of reality in today's
world that most of us neglect. In the midst of it all, there was a small kid who inspired his family with small acts of kindness, faith, and
simplicity, and who, through hard work and love, was able to improve their lives and change others into better people. Magnifico is an
unremarkable mild comedy that transforms into a saccharine melodrama in the blink of an eye. It could be an eye-opening and life-
changing story about a holy nine-year-old Filipino child who is dedicated to helping his family regardless of the repercussions. The film
may have made one realize that even in a hypocritical world, things like these are still possible.
