CONTEMPORARY PHILIPPINE ARTS FROM THE REGION

Name: ______________________________________ Grade Level: ________________

Section: ____________________________ Date: _________________

Most Essential Learning Competency:

The learner evaluates contemporary art forms based on elements and principles.
Code: CAR11/12CAP-0c -e-6
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the module, students should be able to:
1. Explain why we like or dislike an artwork through the process of art criticism.
2. Evaluate contemporary art forms based on the elements and principles.
3. Submit an art analysis output to hone one’s skills in evaluating an artwork.

From the previous modules you had in this subject, you were asked to look for different art works and even tasked to
make a new one or create something from an existing one. How do you feel in doing so? Were you confused or had difficulty,
or just felt that it was innate in you? Now, how do you feel when people notice your work? Especially when people start to
have comments and suggestions on your work. We may feel overwhelmed with either praises or criticism that could either
make us push our talents or discourage us from striving to show what we can accomplish. It is but natural to feel and think
of these in everything we do, not just arts, probably because human nature strives to do what will please others the most.
Every now and then, let it be a reminder that Arts is not confined to what is perceived as only pleasing to one’s taste, but to
a lot of factors that you will have to come across. In this module, you will learn how to look “into” an artwork, not just look
“at” it simply, and claim why you like it or not. You only have to take the necessary ways and means from the next lesson
by beginning with ART CRITICISM.

DESCRIPTION

The art of criticism dated back in the 18th century from the works of Jonathan Richardson, An Essay on the Whole Art
of Criticism as It Relates to Painting and an Argument in Behalf of the Science of a Connoisseur (both 1719). He was able
to develop a practical system of critical evaluation like the utilitarian calculus of Jeremy Bentham. A
established hierarchy of values that anyone could use and simply put it as a matter of ratings.
Come mid-18th century, Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten created the discipline of aesthetics, giving it a place as a
separate philosophical study, and in so doing, afforded new criteria for critical judgment. In his most important
work, Aesthetica (1750–58), he sets forth the difference between a moral and exclusively aesthetic understanding of art, a
way of thinking that can be regarded as the major difference between a traditional and modern approach to art making and
art criticism. Later in the century, Immanuel Kant’s Critik der Urteilskraft (1790; “Critique of Judgment”) introduced the
ideas of a disinterested judgment of taste, the purposiveness of artistic form, and the difference between the beautiful
and sublime. These ideas remain influential to the present day, especially in the formalist criticism that would dominate the
mid-20th century. (Source: https://www.britannica.com/art/art-criticism/Art-criticism-in-the-18th-century-Enlightenment-theory#ref834931)

STEPS of ART CRITICISM:
1. Description is the general information, you discuss the subject matter, the materials used and the art form itself.
You have to know the factual truth and research on answering the following questions:
a. What is the Title? Gives the audience a clue on what message the artist wish to convey.
b. Who is the Artist? The one who influences or affect the viewer.

2
c. When and where was it created? Usually produced in the modern era. It resonates a clear understanding of
where the artwork originated or where the artist is coming from.
d. What media was used? Highlights the contemporary era through the use of advancements in innovation and
Information and Communications Technology.
e. Is there a primary subject in the piece? By determining the subject in an artwork, will make you realize
what it represents.
f. What specific elements of Art can you find in the masterpiece? Provides you the sensual and substantial
features of an art form.
Art forms in the contemporary era vary in subject, theme, styles and medium, as well as techniques as it is
unconventional and goes out of the ordinary. It has characteristics that is common to all which are needed in the creation of
an art form.

Let’s review the Elements of Arts:

Activity 1. Make your own version (just one) of a visual art form giving emphasis on one Element of Art (Use a short bond
paper). These are the suggested materials to work on: FOR THE ELEMENT OF LINE, VALUE, TEXTURE use
charcoal pencil. FOR THE ELEMENT OF SPACE, COLOR, SHAPE AND FORM use pastel crayon or water color).
If you have other choice of materials you wish to work on, you may do so since visual art has other mediums that you could
play with. Submit together with the other activities in this module, you may also save your work in PDF file and send to
your subject teacher. Refer to this rubrics: Originality: 5Pts, Craftsmanship 5Pts, Appropriateness of Element 5Pts, total of
15Pts, the art piece will form part of your performance for the entire week. Lastly, Have Fun!

It should also be taken that these elements are not confined to visual arts solely, but to other forms of art such as
theater, choreography, musical ensembles, cinema, and others. As the elements of art is considered as the basic ingredients
in its entirety, the elements, likewise, play as another means in understanding the arts as it should not be seen as literal as it

2. Analysis- Looking into the artwork is 100% objective. The focus here is on the style of the artist as shown in his
masterpiece, particularly the design and value to the viewer. This is where you decide what the features suggest and
decide why the creator used these to convey specific ideas.
a. How do elements of art interact with each other? How do they work together as a whole?

Design is the overall plan of the entire artwork, the means of an artist to demonstrate or present ones’ feelings or
ideas or where the artwork was based upon with organization of elements. In this regard, contemporary artwork is hard to
assess.

3. Interpretation- The focus here is the expressive qualities, the meaning, theme, mood, or idea communicated by
the artist. This part is subjective in nature as it requires a critic their own personal opinion or preference, but then
again, you will have to answer the following questions to have a more educated way of looking into an artwork.
a. What is the artist trying to tell?
b. What thoughts or feelings does the viewer have when they look, feel, hear the art work?
c. Express your opinion but always back it with an evidence or reason.

4. Judgement- the combination of the steps 1, 2, and 3; last part in which you decide on the beauty of the work.
a. Do you like it? Why or why not?
b. Is the artwork effective?
c. What criteria do you think is important that helped you in concluding your judgment?

Art is everywhere, in everything that you do art is always present. Even the simplest way of making your bed in the
morning to the strokes in brushing your teeth, the presence of the elements and principles of art cannot be denied. Art
empowers us in so many aspects that develops us wholly. How so? Our previous module taught us to look “into” an artwork,
we are able to develop our high order thinking as we go step-by-step in critiquing art. This should not however stop there,
as you learn the skill, we can apply it in our future careers as doctors, nurses, police, architects, engineers, among others.
Think about it, even the cavemen made art from the petroglyphs that were found inside their caves. They even used
indigenous materials: limestone, blood, charcoal. Needless to say, art has always been a part of the humans... or are we just
a part of the master piece of an almighty creator?
For starters, let us discuss the different contemporary art forms that is present in different regions in our country with
integrated activities within the context.

Activity 1. Developing my keen eyes on Arts.

DIRECTIONS: Research about the contemporary art form that is asked and compare it with the same genre in a tabular
format as the template below. Give the information that is missing in the table. The first one is an example format that
you may follow. Use a short bond paper in answering the activities with proper labels using black pens, you may leave
the picture blank but fill out all information about the artwork to be compared. Rubrics for the Performance Task Below:
Title, Artist, Place, Subject (30%); Materials and Art Elements and Principles (35%); Comparison (35%).
I. Contemporary Fine Arts
“The fine arts consist of architecture, sculpture, and painting. Some fine arts are made in two dimensions where the
material or medium is applied to a flat surface to create an image. This is usually hung on the wall, as in the case of a
painting. There are also three-dimensional fine arts, such as architecture and sculpture in ice, metal, or glass where molding,
carving, and combining materials are done to make an artwork” (Vibal, 2020, p. 9).
1. Contemporary Painting is the most popular among the fine arts since the materials used for this medium are flexible,
durable, and inexpensive. It attracts many temperaments and almost any theme can be treated through this genre.

the monotony of blue.
Comparison (similarities and differences)
Both artwork comes from the contemporary painting genre with acrylic paint as the material that was similarly used but
differ in the use of the cloth canvas and the concrete wall canvas.

“The Laughter” is a painting that depicts the fantasy of being a child again, having no worries, no cause for anxiety,
possessing the vigor and vitality of youth to do, perform, create and fulfill freely the grandest vision the artist can ever
imagine of himself. “The wreckage typhoon Yolanda has demonstrated how the forces of nature are capable of unleashing
their most destructive elements if not handled with proper care and respect. The painting depicts Mother Nature as a
woman of sensitivities amidst the tragedy, highlighting her role to humanity as the giver of life and cause of death, and
the source of all beauty as well as destruction in the universe. She is accompanied by the legendary sarimanok, seemingly
startled by the strong winds and a pair of arowanas symbolizing strength and territoriality. The woman’s innocent glimpse
is a constant reminder that nature at its finest will always be a beauty to reckon with when not abused. (Vibal, 2020)

In both paintings, “life comes in so many shapes and forms” whether from the children nor from the mother nature.
Yolanda as one may recall gave so much hardship for the people of Tacloban but the painting actually exhales beauty
that celebrates nature amidst the tragedy that was playfully recorded in the ruins of a concrete wall just like the energy of
the laughter of children of the present generation who are carefree and continues their day to day lives despite of this
pandemic.

2. Contemporary Sculpture is an art form that requires the artists creative use of balance. Skill in the use of materials,
and physical strength. For many centuries, the common subject matter was the human figure, with materials limited
to marble, metal, and wood. This has changed in contemporary sculpture where new materials and technology have
given the sculptor more choices and flexibility in art-making

engineering, and tectonics are applied. As an art, the structure is designed creatively, which is determined by its
function and purpose, the space that it will occupy, and the people who will occupy it. In contemporary architecture,
architecture relates itself to environment planning, city planning, space planning, landscape architecture, interior
design, and urban design.

II. Contemporary Visual Arts

“Visual art is another group of art genres that is seen by the eye and perceived by the mind. Unmoving as well as
moving images, appeal to visual perception and this makes the scope of visual art very broad. For purposes of classification,
we group under visual arts the art forms that make use of new media: installation art, public art, mixed and multimedia art,
photography, and digital arts.
There are visual arts that require the use of equipment like cameras, video recorders, or computers to capture images
in a creative way. These art forms include photography and digital art. when combined with other materials, they are
freffered to as “mixed or multimedia” art. as such, art is capable of “interpretation of life which enables us to cope more
successfully with the chaotic state of things to bring from life a a better, that is, a more convincing and more reliable
meaning” (Hauser 1959, 208)” (Vibal, 2020, p. 33)
One of the mainstream contemporary visual arts that we have now is Installation art. It is often identified with
sculpture because of its three-dimensional forms and techniques employed in it. The tremendous change in sculptural
attitude has influenced installation artists. It is a labor intensive and the artist usually works with fellow artists and
assistants with welding, carpentry, construction, and fabrication skills because installation art involves combination
of several things: architectural setting, environment site, use of everyday objects in a specific context, and the
viewer/participant. Therefore, artists also study things that are outside the field of art such as physics, engineering,
chemistry, geology, and sometimes, the technical aspects of operating and controlling music. Types: technology-
aided installation art, performance installation art, conceptual installation art, interactive installation art,
environmental installation.

home the gold and silver lion trophies for outdoor and
design respectively. The element of lines and colors and

The food mandala (Sanskrit word for circle, harmony, balance and unity) also exaggerated the call for the agriculture
department to promote ecological agriculture instead of risky genetically modified organisms (GMOs). While the
choice of the dead whale to represent the damage caused by plastic pollution was inspired by the 30 cases of beached
whales recorded in the first quarter of 2016 alone, according to Greenpeace. Both of these artworks are sends a
powerful message to the viewers with its extravagant features made by common materials that we have in our daily
activities which we pay little attention to most of the time. Both of these installation arts were produced by
Greenpeace.

III. Contemporary Design in Art Crafts

Contemporary crafts in the Philippine regions take the form of bags, mats, textile, baskets, footwear, ceramic pot,
clay pottery, jewelry, metalwork, to name some. It requires putting together different materials from pandan (seagrass),
coconut leaves, abaca, buri (palm), piña, shell, or bamboo. Folk arts in the different regions have evolved as they have been
influenced by globalization, new techniques aided by technology, global aesthetic, and market demand.
For example, banig is made from pandan or seagrass and were traditionally woven into sleeping mats in its natural
color. Today, different types of banig are produced in different colors and are designed with flowers, birds, landscapes, or
geometric shapes. Aside from sleeping mats, they are also made into bags, wall decors, and throw pillow cases. (Vibal,
2020, p. 51)

IV. Contemporary Performing Arts

Performing arts include film, theater and performance arts, dance, and music. These are different from the visual arts
in the sense that they move in time and space and usually involve a group of people of different knowledge and skills-each
one playing a specific role. As such, understanding each genre better requires the application of the typology of visual,
dramatic, and literary components. For dance, it is necessary to look into the knowledge of choreography, technical skills,
performance skills, rhythm/tempo. For music, focus is on form, context, and expression.
