Background The CIBSE Young Engineers Awards reflect the vitally important
role that young engineers and their employers have to play
in future-proofing the built environment. In today’s economy,
the call for new engineering talent is stronger than ever.

The prestigious annual awards scheme brings together the

CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate of the Year Award, the CIBSE
Employer of the Year Award, and the CIBSE Apprentice
of the Year Award. The three awards aim to recognise

of graduate engineers and apprentices, whilst also

CIBSE – Young Engineers Awards 2021

CIBSE Graduate of the
Year Award 2021
The CIBSE Graduate of the Year Award is the perfect platform for emerging
talent in the built environment community. The shortlisted young engineers will
present their ideas in front of a live virtual audience, in a competitive bid to win
the top prize.

The judging panel includes representatives from two of the world’s leading
engineering institutions: ASHRAE and CIBSE. The winner will enjoy a full 
paid for an expenses paid trip to the ASHRAE Winter Conference in Las Vegas.
The second runner-up will receive a £600 cash prize provided by CIBSE
Patrons, and the Manly Trust will provide a £300 cash prize to the young
engineer in third place.

Jessica Cansian
chapmanbdsp
Jessica joined Chapmanbdsp in 2020 as
a Graduate Environmental Consultant and
has worked on large scale commercial
projects. She is passionate about
sustainable engineering with a particular
interest in net zero carbon design,
embodied carbon, passive design
strategies, retrofit and user wellbeing. With
an interdisciplinary background, she holds
a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Urban Design (Unisinos
University, 2013) and an MSc in Sustainable Building: Performance
and Design (Oxford Brookes University, 2019). Jessica is a
registered Architect in Brazil and a CIBSE Affiliate currently
pursuing her licentiateship. Recently, she became a WELL AP
and BREEAM Associate.
Ella Clark
AECOM
Ella is a graduate mechanical engineer
in AECOM’s London office fit-out team.
Since starting, she has worked on a
variety of projects in MEP and Vertical
Transportation, leading the design for
multiple projects. She also supports other
young engineers at AECOM and mentors
school girls interested in STEM.
Matthew Dickenson
AECOM
Since graduating from the University of
Nottingham in 2019, Matt has worked as a
graduate mechanical engineer on a variety
of mixed-use projects within the AECOM
St Albans team. He coordinates events for
the CIBSE HVAC Systems Group, co-leads
the AECOM Young Engineers Forum and
actively participates in STEM events.
Michaela Lattenbergova
Arup
Michaela is an engineer who graduated
from Heriot-Watt University in April
2019 with an MEng with distinction in
Architectural Engineering. Shortly after that
she joined Arup as a graduate mechanical
engineer and is currently working with the
Buildings team in the Edinburgh office and
Arup global digital initiative.

Niamh Luck
CPW
Niamh graduated with a BEng In Building
Services Engineering from Coventry
University in 2021, achieving First Class
with Honours; alongside her studies, she
works at CPW Birmingham, where she
focuses on healthcare projects for the
NHS. She is actively involved in CIBSE
West Midlands as YEN Vice President
where she offers support to those who are
new to the industry. She participates in WISE and STEM events
at local schools, and she aims to demonstrate that engineering
is an enjoyable and achievable career path for all. Her main objective
is to showcase that she can be a great engineer, not just a great
female engineer by demonstrating what her engineering can achieve.
Yara Machnouk
Elementa Consulting
Yara Machnouk is an Environmental Design
CIBSE – Young Engineers Awards 2021
Engineer working in the sustainability
team at Elementa Consulting. She joined
the company after completing an MEng
Degree at the University of Nottingham in
Architecture and Environmental Design.
While generally exploring many forms of
energy modelling and sustainability within
building services and design, she has more
recently been focusing on whole life carbon assessments and more
specifically, the embodied carbon impact of MEP materials.
Jonathan Pairman
RED Engineering Design LTD
Jon achieved First-Class (Hons) from
Southampton University. A graduate
mechanical engineer in RED’s technology
team, Jon designs sustainable solutions
including a research piece on battery
technology/smart grid integration for data
centres. Inspired by his family’s teaching
background he became a STEM
ambassador and created RED’s
“Collaborative Learning Programme” to support
graduate development.
Lucy Sherburn
FairHeat
Lucy joined FairHeat after graduating from
the University of Sheffield with a Master’s
Degree in Chemical Engineering. As a
Graduate Engineer her role has involved
working on the design and operation of
new build heat networks to deliver cost and
energy saving improvements. Lucy is an
active member of CIBSE, YEPG and STEM.

CIBSE Apprentice of
the Year Awards 2021
The CIBSE Apprentice of the Year Award is open internationally Prizes will be awarded across two categories:
and recognises the invaluable contribution made by apprentices

registered on Standards/Frameworks at level 3 – 7 in building services
engineering and related occupations. This year, the award has been - Apprentice of the Year – Degree ( Level 5-7)
split into two, so that apprentices across every level are celebrated.
First place
This award allows the CIBSE community to recognise the early career £500 cash prize
contributors that have gained their skills and knowledge through
practical learning in their chosen industry. Second place
£300 cash prize
In addition to the entry form each apprentice had to submit a three
minute video on a topic chosen by CIBSE; these were judged by our Third place
expert judging panel. £200 cash prize

Amanullah is 27 years old. He is a junior Megan started her building services

electrical engineer at Cooper Homewood.
He started his carrier in electrical field
as an electrician in Sweden in 2015
and thereafter he decided to improve
his electrical knowledge. Therefore, he
chose to continue his studies in electrical
engineering.
Daniel Bailey
Derry Building Services
apprenticeship in the summer of 2019
at the age of 20. She was fascinated by
the drawings that were dotted around
the office during her interview and was
therefore eager to learn more. Fast forward
2 years, she has headed up a sustainability
project mechanically, played a key role
in the delivery of a vast and diverse
collection of projects as well as completing the first year of her Level
4 qualification with distinctions across the board.

project.

Stevie is currently undertaking an

apprenticeship at Briggs & Forrester
Special Projects. Throughout her 2 ½
years working at Briggs & Forrester she
has experienced work within project
management, quantity surveying and
estimating, completed a HNC in the built
environment and coming to completion of
her NVQ.

Katie Baker
Tetra Tech
After a year living and working in
Australia, Katie joined Tetra Tech as a
degree apprentice engineer in 2019. She
has worked on a variety of public and
private sector projects gaining valuable
experience in improving the sustainability
of buildings, an area she is passionate
about.
Josie Cheeseman
WSP
Josie is currently an Apprentice Building
Services Design Engineer at WSP in
London. She started her apprenticeship
in 2019 after completing her A Levels and
is starting her third year at London South
Bank University. She is currently working
within the mechanical team.
Connor Hanlon
HDR
Connor is a Mechanical Engineer at
HDR studying towards his degree
apprenticeship at London South Bank
University. He is enthusiastic about
ensuring the industry continues to grow
and encouraging young engineers to
enrol on apprenticeship schemes – both
endorsing the route and supporting others
as part of the HDR L&D committee.
Musab Mahmood
Atkins
Musab is an Apprentice Building Services
Engineer at Atkins in Westminster. He
started his apprenticeship at 17 years
completing a BTEC level 3 and obtaining
his EngTech. He is currently in year 3 of
his degree apprenticeship at LSBU aiming
for a 1st. In his spare time he enjoy sports,
particularly football and helping local
charities organise community events.

Yogi Nagam
Buro Happold
Yogi is a first year Apprentice in Building
Services Engineering at Buro Happold
who began her career at 25 after 5 years
of working in music venues, festivals and
bars. She finds the opportunity to work and
learn at a world class engineering company
so early in her career stage fantastic, so
she’s excited for the projects to come.
Jason Rawlins
Couch Perry Wilkes
Jason left the British Army (Infantry)
and he wanted to pursue in Engineering
(electrically specifically). He joined CPW as
an Apprentice at 22, and began part time
CIBSE – Young Engineers Awards 2021
studying at Leicester College. Jason had
zero knowledge of Building Services when
he joined, it was all completely alien to him.
Today, at 25 years old he has finished his
Level 3 with top grades and just finished
his first year at Sheffield Hallam University with good grades in his
Electrical Engineering degree.
Lewis Ward
Couch Perry Wilkes
Lewis is a 24-year-old apprentice
mechanical engineer and has been at
Couch Perry Wilkes since 2015. He has
completed both ONC and HNC at Solihull
College, and is currently in his final year
at Coventry University. Lewis enjoys
learning more and more about mechanical
engineering every day.
