ABSTRACT

This attachment report describes into detail all activities I was involved in
during the period of attachment at Biosystems Consultancy.

It also outlines the knowledge and skills I acquired during the period of
attachment that are practically applicable in the field of architecture.
INTRODUCTION

Introduction

Industrial attachment is a structured, credit-bearing work experience in a

professional work setting during which the student applies and acquires
knowledge and skills. It involves the application of learned skills in an
organization related to the student’s major.
It should challenge the student to examine the values of the organization
involved in the experience and to assess the student’s education as it relates to
the Industrial Attachment.

Objectives of industrial attachment

➢ Familiarize students with institutions of their discipline and enable them to

apply the acquired knowledge in a real work situation

➢ Provide opportunities for students to gain practical and soft skills which
would be suitable for future employment

➢ Facilitate students to learn more about their fields of study and related
career prospects from a real-world perspective

➢ Enable students to meet and network with professionals in their respective

fields of study

➢ Ensure the academic programs suit the expectations of the labour market.

Chapter 1: Site Visits

Bumala kmtc site visit

On the first day of attachment we were tasked to take as built measured drawings
of King’orani apartments located in King’orani. The apartments consisted of the
ground floor (shops), mezzanine floor and 1-5 Floors. With the help of my
teammate, we took measurements of the whole building for the whole day while
doing layout sketches on site.
We then reported back to the office and digitized them. Our supervisor urged us
to calculate the areas using fills on Archicad.
Matuga - Kwale

We visited Matuga, a site where there was ongoing construction. The

substructure had already been built. We were to take as-built measurements of
the changes made on site.
With the supervision of the graduate architect Kenan Nyakundi, we took the
measurements using a tape measure and sketched the layout on site.
We reported back to the office to digitise the layout and continue designs and
layouts for the intended first floor
Utange Villa

We went to Utange, to set out. We took ropes and tied to the profile boards with
the guide of grid lines on the scheme designs. After setting out, we poured lime
(choka) 300mm from each side of the gridlines with the help of a plumb bob and
tape measure.
The choka will guide the site workers to dig the foundation trenches. Before the
trenches or choka is drawn the foreman and architect supervisor must make sure
the measurements and gridlines align with the scheme design plan given.
Chapter 2: projects

Mtwapa Project

We were given a brief and site plan to start making preliminary designs.
Brief
➢ 6 female washrooms
➢ 6 male washrooms
➢ Parking space 40
➢ Shops -75 or more
The project was to be done in phases.
We were tasked to continue modelling the shops and site using Archicad.
Skills learnt
➢ Road curbing (using custom profile and wall)
➢ Toilet privacy and sensitivity (male and female)
➢ Skirting (using custom profile)
➢ Coping on parapet wall
➢ Making sign/advertisement boards using SketchUp
Renders
We then tried to render the 3D using Twinmotion with the assistance of the
technician katana. We combined the use of SketchUp and twin motion.
Dominion Daughters

We were given the layout of a unit for the Dominion Daughters estate and the
site plan with contours.
I was tasked with modelling the site that had a relatively gentle slope. I input the
contours and levels on Archicad then was tasked to model the road on the site.
I researched on YouTube on ways to do so and found several methods i.e.
➢ Slab and solid operations tool(merging then subtraction with upward
extrusion)
➢ Morph and solid operations tool(merging then subtraction with upward
extrusion)
➢ Using mesh tool only
I was tasked to find an appropriate way to do the earthworks (cut and fill) the site
then input the units on the site as laid out.
We also did case studies and brief analysis of the added spaces on the site,
swimming pool, crèche, basketball court, commercial and communal centre and
football pitch.
Ziwa la Ng’ombe Apartments

I was given a layout of apartments in Bombolulu. The client wanted some

changes to be made on the plan with the guidance of the supervisor. Also there
were some functional problems with the plan.
I was tasked with producing scheme designs for the apartments, plans (ground
floor, typical and roof), sections and elevations.
Key points to consider
➢ Dimensions, gridlines, openings, walls and overall dimension
➢ Annotations
➢ Finishing
➢ Angular/radial dimensions
➢ Internal dimensions
I was then tasked with modelling the apartments in Archicad for rendering.
Skills learnt
➢ Modelling a custom skylight using morph tool
➢ Drainage system
➢ Scheme designs
Renders
Then attempted on rendering the model using Twinmotion, sharpening my skills
using it.
Issa Apartments

It’s an eleven storey building in Mshomoroni with an ocean view. It includes a

pent house, basketball pitch, outdoor communal fireplace, rooftop pool, and two
duplexes.
I was tasked with aiding in production of the scheme designs mainly did the
elevations, annotating the details
Mr Osman Estate

I was tasked in improving the layout unit of dominion daughters for the client
who wanted a similar design.
I did the scheme designs then attempted on making renders using twin motion
Spa Likoni Mall

We went to site in Likoni mall near ferry and did a site analysis. Then went back
to the office to do case studies to aid us in design with the aid and supervision of
the supervisor.
We then drew bubble diagrams for the functional spaces;
➢ Salon
➢ Barber
➢ Washrooms
➢ Moroccan bath
➢ Sauna
➢ Massage parlours for both males and females
We then tried out several design layouts using fills on Archicad and areas
calculated needed for the spaces during the case study and brief analysis.
After that we handed over the project to the graduate architect to develop it.
Shamba Project

I was tasked to make the scheme designs for the project that includes mainly the
plans.
I was then tasked to aid in making the presentation plans using Photoshop.

Report

Aided in report research for the client presentation of the sultan project.
Chapter 3

CHALLENGES AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Challenges faced
➢ change of working environment
➢ financial constraints
Recommendations
➢ attaches to be paid
➢ A comprehensive checklist of works to be done during attachment to be
issued to students by the university.
➢ Assessments to be done by lecturers should be thorough

CONCLUSION

Despite the challenges, the attachment was a great learning experience. I got to
share and learn a lot from my colleagues and teammates. I was equipped with
design and technical skills.
