MUTATION enroute to enhanced

MINDSET
INTRODUCTION
2020 and 2021 were tough years for every one because of the covid-19 outbreak, which started
from Wuhan, China in December of 2019. It spread worldwide and stated as an ongoing pandemic.
Do you remember the mindset of the people and know what was the mindset of the frontline
workers? Let’s rewind the past years and look at the three waves of covid.

Wave 1 (mask, social distancing, sanitizer)

when covid started people’s mindset was that it is another respiratory disease like cold or flu. They
were right in seeing that it is a respiratory disease but much deadlier than cold or flu because it was
as deadly as H1N1, for example. Which was also an epidemic and this was one of the reasons why it
spread so quickly. When the first wave came and the world health organisation declared that covid
was a pandemic. People were in shock because the economy collapses and schools, colleges, offices
are closed and the whole world undergoes lockdown. The only thing people knew was SMS (social
distancing, mask, sanitizer) and go to a doctor if they feel symptoms like cough,
headache, fatigue, breathing difficulties, and loss of smell and taste. Symptoms may begin one to
fourteen days after exposure to the virus. At least a third of people who are infected do not
develop noticeable symptoms. Of those people who develop symptoms noticeable enough to be
classed as patients, most (81%) develop mild to moderate symptoms (up to mild pneumonia),
while 14% develop severe symptoms (dyspnea, hypoxia, or more than 50% lung involvement on
imaging), and 5% suffer critical symptoms (respiratory failure, shock, or multiorgan dysfunction).

Wave 2 (delta, black fungus, vaccine)

When the delta wave started India was already 3 rd country with the greatest number of cases. When
the 2nd wave started it was already deadlier than the 1 st wave because not only did it have a higher
death rate but also spread faster then in the first wave. The major affected states were Maharashtra,
Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Delta variant
might cause more severe illness than previous variants in unvaccinated people. Black fungus also
known as mucormycosis is ubiquitous and found in soil and air and even in the nose and mucus of
healthy people. With the coming of the 2nd wave people this time did not only have social
distancing, mask, sanitizer but also vaccines as their main weapon to fight the covid-19.

Wave 3(omicron, booster)

On 26 November 2021, WHO designated the variant B.1.1.529 a variant of concern, named
Omicron. When the 3rd wave came everyone, this time is ready for the virus this time
because unlike the previous waves this time people are not in a shock as they had already
faced the virus twice. Though this time people had been vaccinated and couldn’t expect the
virus they all are ready to face it as the circumstances previously were also somewhat
similar.

Conclusion
What we should learn from the first 2 waves and from the ongoing 3 rd wave is that instead of
complaining about the pandemic we should be happy about the precious time we got to spend with
our family members. Yes, it is true that we need to stay in our homes because of covid but because
of these restrictions covid has put on normal activities, the amount of pollution caused has also
decreased by a lot which is not only good for the environment but also for humans as the number of
diseases and deaths caused by air pollution have also decreased. Apart from this covid also gives us
the life lesson of being ready to face any sudden problems which come in our lives where we don’t
have to panic but instead think calmly and peacefully, which also applies to the 3 rd wave of covid.
