Q: What's the difference between adding a weight and adding a load?

A: For a static analysis it is the same thing. Using loads gives a force in the Z direction only where as a
weight would be in all three directions. Using a weight would be beneficial with other analysis, for
example a transportation analysis where the structure is turned on its side or if you will use the model
for a dynamic analysis.

Q: Does Seastate generate a dead load?

A: You can add the dead weight through the seastate load generation feature in precede.

Q: How do you apply the wind load?

A: A wind load is defined through the seastate load generation box in precede. You would check off
the wind box and then input the information you are given for the wind. This load is applied to the
structure for the degree you specify.

Q: How should we create and define the property for the piles?

A: The piles are created when you use the structural definition wizard. The property is to be defined
through the Property manage box in precede.

Q: What’s the A/B release?

A: This is the member end releases at the beginning or end of the member.

Q: Can you define soil structure interaction (stiffness) for the foundation elements?

A: Yes, through a PSI file, not in Precede.

Q: Is it possible to create duplicated beams?

A: You can have the different members with the same group name and same member properties. Also,
you can have members with different group names that are the same member type with the same
properties.

Q: How do you input current speed profile over water depth?

A: You specify the profile in the seastate load generation box. See picture below:

Q: Are the piles connected at the intermediate node points?

A: Yes, at every joint that ends in “P” is a joint to a pile member. The Piles are divided at the same
location as the Jacket Legs.

Q: Should the Pile and Legs be created as 2 members?

A: Yes, the leg will be one member and the pile will be one member if it is un-grouted. These members
will be at the same location and will display on top of each other. If the leg is grouted it will only
display one member instead of two.

Q: How do you model the connection between conductors and the deck?

A: You will connect the conductor to the conductor framing using dummy members.

Q: Can you show how space load applied to node. Basically how does it calculate the load?

A: The load is distributed out to the joints selected. It gets distributed depending on the distance from
the load to the joint (like rigid connection between the load point and the distributed joints).

Q: How do you define member offsets?

A: There is a member offset option which you could use. Also if you select member-details/modify and
select a member you can change the offset through this box. Using Joint-Automatic Design, precede
can automatically calculate the brace offsets to the outside of the cords.

Q: What depth below the mudline is normally assumed to be fully fixed….ex. clay soil?

A: Precede doesn’t do anything regarding soil and pile. This work is done using single pile program.

Q: How is self-weight generated?

A: All the members input have a density. Precede will then take the amount of steel for each member
and multiply that by the density and give the structural self-weight.

Q: How many codes are covered in SACS? i.e. API, NORSOK, etc.?

A: Please open Precede, go to Options/Analysis, all included codes are listed for Code Check Option.

Q: Should I put fixities like 222000 in every joint as in the samples?

A: For a model created for a static analysis you would not use that. This type of fixity is used for
dynamic analysis. It is restrained degrees of freedom.

Q: How do we analyze local stresses at the joint assembly?

A: After you run the static analysis you can look at the stresses.

Q: Could you show me how to define boundary conditions (i.e all fixed, hinged)?

A: If you use the structural wizard it will automatically put the fixities at the bottom of the legs as well
as the bottom of the conductors. To define fixities you can go to joint/fixity and input it through there.

Q: Can you show how equipment load applied to node. Basically how it calculates?

A: A skid load is applied to the member as a concentrated load. The skid beams that cross the deck
members is the location when the load will be applied. The load is distributed to these points depending
on where the load is located.

The following are the product-related questions and corresponding answers from the September 11th
webinar.

Q: Why you did not model wish-bone for pile and leg connection?

A: Time did not permit me to show the wishbone modelling but you can add a wishbone between the
leg and pile. Use the Wishbone command from the Member menu.

Q: I saw you have a card where you can select master and slave? May I know what is this for and how
is this affect the analysis please?

A: This allows you to simulate the in-plane rigidity of a planar part of the structure. One example
would be a deck stiffened by deck plate. If you don’t model the deck plates, the master-slave will
ensure all the joints on the deck move as a rigid body and can also improve performance in dynamic
analysis.

Q: Will the master and slave definition affect the design if we don't define this?

A: If the deck plates are not modelled and transverse loads are applied which cause the deck members
to deflect, then these deflections will not actually occur in practise. Using the master-slave constraint
will give a better result.

Q: Where and when should we use Gap elements?

A: Gap elements are used to simulate tension or compression only elements or to simulate friction. A
common example would be the support for a jacket on a barge which only provide upwards support but
can lift off if upwards force is applied.

Q: How do we model a Joint Can?

A: The thicker portion at the ends of a member which form the joint can should be defined as segments
within the member. Give the end segments larger.

Q: Is there any option to define offsets with single command?

A: Yes. The Offsets command from the Member menu allows you to automatically specify the offset to
align top or bottom of steel of adjacent members. You can also define a distance relative to these
locations.

Q: How do we get the continuing education credits? How can I get a certificate of attendance of
CEU's?

A: Bentley Learning Units (BLU), Bentley Institute’s equivalent to Professional Development Hours
(PDH), are granted for the live and recorded webinar. Within 2-4 weeks of watching the presentation,
Learning Units are added to your transcript. To access your transcript, go to
www.bentley.com/mylearninghistory. On the "My Learning History" page, there is a detailed how-to
guide related to Learning Units and transcripts, in addition to the link to the user’s online transcript. In
most states, users can submit their Bentley transcripts for consideration for continuing education credit
toward their registration renewals.

Q: How do I view this webinar again or share it with a colleague?

A: This event has been recorded and can be viewed online in the On-Demand Video Library.

Q: What is the significant difference between SACS5.3 and SACS5.4?

A : You can look in the Executive under the SACS News tab and you will see all the major updates
and enhancements.

Q: Can we import 3D models from other software into SACS?

A Yes, Precede can import or export with all Integrated Structure Modeling (ISM;
http://communities.bentley.com/products/structural/w/structural__wiki/integrated-structural-modeling-
home.aspx) compatible solutions like Revit, Tekla, Dlubal, RAM, STAAD. We also can import an sdnf
or FEMSYS file.

Q: Any graphic output for the example?

A: Yes. After running the bladed file it created a model file that we can open in Precede.

Q: Is there going to be an option to automatically check in network licenses?

A: Yes. If you are in automatic mode it will automatically check in or checkout the license when you
are in or not in use. If in manual mode it will check out the license chosen for two days unless you
manually check it back in. These options can be found under the SACS License Explorer tab in the
executive.

Q: What is ISM?

A: Integrated Structural Modeler. (ISM;

http://communities.bentley.com/products/structural/w/structural__wiki/integrated-structural-modeling-
home.aspx)

Q: Is it possible to import from STAAD/ANSYS files?

A: 1. User can export STAAD model into ISM, SACS can import the ISM file.
2. SACS has a converter which can be used to convert an ANSYS model into a SACS model.
Please note that only the structure itself can be converted between STAAD/ANSYS and SACS.

Q: Can we convert Pro-E files to SACS?

A: No.

Q: Can I import from Xsteel or PDS?

A: If the model can be put into an SDNF file or ISM we can import it. Otherwise we cannot import
it.

Q: Can a PDMS model be imported into SACS?

A: If the model can be put into an SDNF file or ISM we can import it. Otherwise we cannot import
it. Precede can export to PDMS.

Q: Can PDMS model be imported into SACS?

A: Yes. In Precede you can choose Import-PDMS.

Q: In the demo folder there are different files types such as ldf. demo 02, pile.demo02,
seainp.demo2, sacinp.demo02. Is there's a way I can find out what all of those names mean? (ex. ldf,
pile, sacinp, saclst, etc.)

A: In the Executive, under the SACS System Setting, you can click on the Program Labels. There is
will give the labels for each program name. See below:

The following are the product-related questions and corresponding answers from the August 7th
webinar.

Q: What design codes are supported in this software?

A: SACS supports API, API-LRFD, AISC, AISC-LRFD, NPD, DnV, Eurocode 3, ISO19902, BS,
and Danish codes.

Q: I'm new to SACS and I want to know how do we export model to other tools like PDMS?ow do
you apply the wind load?

A: SACS supports many structural export formats including DXF, ISM and SDNF. SDNF would
most likely be best for import to PDMS.

Q: Is SACS 5.4 capable of using Multiple Response Spectra (e.g., Wind & Wave together) in a time-
history analysis?

A: Yes. In the Analysis generator you can create an Analysis Category of Dynamic and then choose
an Analysis Class of Time History Wave, Wind, Force.

Q: Any plans to include AS4100, AS3990 in supported design codes?

A: We have added support for the Australian AS1170 wind code. Design code support for AS4100 is
under consideration for the future depending on user demand.

Q: Can we change any section properties in Line assistant window itself?

A: Yes, if you edit a SECT section line, you can override the section properties.

Q: Precede manual is not found?

A: The Precede manual can be loaded from the manuals tab in the Executive.

Q: How do we give input to wind induced fatigue with Spectra?

A: Enter a range of wind speeds and load cases and stresses for each will be generated.

Q: Do we need to generate transfer function for wind induced fatigue also?

A: The user inputs a range of wind speeds, SACS calculates the Weibull distribution automatically.

Q: We just completed a design of a flare tower constructed with tubular members using DNV for
fatigue check. Is SACS be able to do this?

A: Yes. This is just the kind of structure that SACS is commonly used for.

Q: More specifically, the current fatigue analysis is based on hot spot stress with stress
concentration. Can SACS considered this?

A: Yes.

Q: Does this version include Mooring line analysis for offshore vessels?

A: No. Later this year, we will debut the first of our solutions for floating systems. Next year we
plan to include mooring capabilities in that.

Q: If we calculate mooring line stiffness separately, how can we apply them to SACS model?

A: As a user defined external load to the SACS model.

Q: Are you planning to include joint connection design (tubular section to rolled section) for topside
design?

A: SACS currently has support for local design of tubular to tubular connection. We do plan to
include non-tubular to tubular in the future.

Q: How does SACS calculate allowable STRENGTH UC for tubular joints?

A: Analysis results for each brace at the joint are combined as a percentage of K, X, or T&Y joint.
For Strength UC, the load part will be 50% of the buckling strength for compression or the yield
strength for tension. The capacities will be calculated using the same equations as Load UC except we
set the safety factor FS=1.0 in this case.

A: This event has been recorded and you can view the recording by clicking here.

Q: Does the conductor have a pile as simulated in presentation?

A: Yes, SACS treats conductors the same as piles.

Q: Are moments and deflections in pile below the mudline?

A: Yes, PSI can generate those curves.

Q: Can a single pile with the reactions at the pile head be analyzed without the jacket?

A: Yes, using the single pile 3D program.

Q: I have not seen how SCOUR effect have been taken of in the psi input file.

A: PSI has a SCOUR card for users to input scour. This sample doesn’t have it.

Q: Do the T-Z Values, Bearing, and Lateral have a certain pattern? (I noticed that the curves were
linear up to a point and then constant). I have seen them having peaks, and was told that those peaks
cause convergence problems?

A: Those curves can have peaks. Sometime peaks could cause convergence problems but not always.

Q: Does the plots have moment and shear plots?

A: Yes, see PLTRQ line.

Q: Can the pile below the mudline be viewed?

A: Yes, open the model in precede and then go to File/Import/PSI Input File and choose your psi input
file. Then you will see the piles displayed below the mudline.

Q: What determines the pile penetration depth for the conductor?

A: The conductor needs enough penetration to support the vertical loads applied on it. It also needs
enough penetration to protect the inside casings.

Q: Can you explain what the T factors were in the definition of the T-Z, P-Y data? The 0.0124,
0.00015, etc.?

A: PSI has a required unit for the input of T-Z and P-Y values. The T-Z units/P-Y units from the soil
report may not be the same as the PSI requirements. Users can use factors (T- Z factors or P-Y factors)
to convert them into the required units in the PSI input file.

Q: Is it possible to obtain a global curve Bottom shear vs. Lateral deflection?

A: You can get a curve of Lateral load vs. Lateral deflection in Single Pile 3D.

Q: Can the deflections and stresses below the mudline be viewed?

A: No, SACS is not able to view the analysis results for piles below mudline.

Q: Does the pilehead fixity for the conductors generated by SACS imply that it has piles connected to
them?

A: Yes.

Q: Why is the bottom bracing pattern is different than others?

A: You may have a mudmat at the bottom of the jacket in which would be around the four corners. An
X brace would not work for that.

Q: Does the program calculate the self-weight of the structure?

A: Yes, it will calculate the self-weight of the structure. You can view the self-weigh in precede.

Q: Is that a new precede version?

A: Yes, it will be SACS version 5.5 which will be available very soon.

Q: How can we do actually a Push-over Analysis in SACS?

A: The SACS Collapse module is capable of doing this.

Q: Is Push-over analysis is compulsory required for this very rigid/stiff offshore jacket structure?

A: It depends. If it is an existing structure then the assessment initiators may force a pushover analysis.
In any case, the structure may be stiff but the foundation may be weak.

Q: How we can decide the size of the jacket leg?

A: You can look at a similar design in the area.

Q: We can see different types of bracing connections, is there any particular method to select type of
bracing connections?

A: Different bracing is possible; it depends upon the amount of redundancy required for the structure.

Q: Which method of analysis is needed for FPSO, Barge structures?

A: SACS does not design the actual hull of the vessel, only TOPSIDE design for FPSO’s and
Transportation analysis using barges.

Q: Does the analysis consider P-Delta effects (global and local)?

A: P-Delta effects can be included in both static and dynamic analysis.

Q: Can SACS check fatigue strength for w-shapes and their connections?

A: Yes, provided users supply their own SCF’s.

Q: Can you view the wave loads applied to the structures?

A: Yes, it is possible to do this. The SEASTATE module will generate an OCI file which will contain
both the structure and the generated wave loads on the structure. This file can be opened in Precede to
view the loading.

Q: With SACS version 5.5, what export options are available?

A: Precede will export to PDMS and SDNF formats. But the link to ISM allows the user to link to
other Bentley products in addition to products such as TEKLA, Revit, and AutoCAD.

Q: Does SACS perform mooring analysis?

A: Currently Mooring analysis is not possible.

Q: Are the elements used to model the deck plate meshed at runtime? The concern here is the transfer
of area loads applied to the plate element to the supporting members.

A: Deck plate elements are not automatically meshed at run time. Users have to refine the model
before a run.
Q: How much is SACS basic module?

A: Please contact our support center for this information.http://selectservices.bentley.com/en-US/

Q: Is there a trial version available and online training?

A: SACS does not have a trial version. There are online resources available for self-training:
http://connected.bentley.com/BrowseLive.aspx?BrowseType=0/ and
http://learn.bentley.com/app/Public/ViewLearningPathWithMasterCourseExpanded?
lpId=100334&mcId=100429/

Q: Does Hull Modeller consider SACS model stiffness after SACS model was imported on barge?

A: At this stage there is no coupled analysis that takes into account both the stiffness of the barge and
the stiffness of the jacket cargo. This is something we are planning for later in 2013.

Q: Can multicore analysis be used with Precede in version 5.5 without Wind Turbine license?

A: Yes. In v5.5 onwards, multicore analysis of wave response can be used with a SACS Offshore
Enterprise license.

Q: Is the panel method same as 3D diffraction method?

A: Yes, the panel method is a 3D radiation-diffraction method.

Q: Does TOW input file generated by motion analysis includes sagging and hogging load cases?

A: At this stage sagging and hogging cases are not considered, this will be added in future.

Q: We generate RAO for barges in MOSES, and you are saying we can do the same in SACS. What is
the difference?

A: The generation of RAOs will be similar. The use of Hull Modeller and Motions should allow faster
modeling, easier modeling of complex shapes, automated meshing and improved interaction and
visualization.

Q: Could you provide more info on FEMGV in SACS 5.5?

A: The joint meshing shown is now integrated inside Precede, there is no longer any need to use
FEMGV externally to Precede.

Q: We have SACS Marine license. Do we automatically get the upgrade as per SACS version 5.5?

A: The new capabilities are in a new product named SACS Marine Enterprise. Discuss upgrade
options from Marine to Marine Enterprise with your Bentley Account Manager.

Q: Mesh Generation is done with regular FEM (triangular /Quad elements). Is there any update
planned for XFEM methods in analysis?
A: We don’t have any plans to support XFEM. This is mostly applied to crack propagation problems.

Q: When the new version SACS 5.5 is released?

A: SACS 5.5 was released in early January 2013.

Q: Can we use the Marine enterprise for Jacket floatation and upending analysis with the derrick barge
modeled?

A: The SACS Flotation and Launch modules are included in Marine Enterprise and can be used for
upending studies.

Q: Is there any analysis support for Vortex shedding analysis of flare structures?

A: Vortex shedding generates local member loads and is not included in SACS.

Q: Can we use the program for jack-up rigs and semis?

A: SACS Hull Modeller, Stability and Motions can be used to model jackup hulls and certain types of
semi-sub hulls. Further capabilities for these types of floating structures will be added during 2013.

Q: Can Hull Modeller be used in SACS static strength check?

A: Hull Modeller is just for generating the geometry of the vessel hull. We will have additional
structural modeling for hulls later in 2013.

Q: Have you incorporated any change in upending analysis of jackets with two hooks, compared to
versions 5.3 or 5.4?

A: There are no major changes in upending in this release.

Q: With the joint meshing option in Precede, can we obtain SCFs more accurately?

A: Yes,the generated plate mesh can be used to determine SCFs.

Q: We currently produce a TOW input file using SEASTATE analysis, in your presentation this TOW
input file can be derived in the Hull Modeller module. Will the SEASTATE module capability to
produce the TOW input file remain?

A: There are no major changes in upending in this release.

Q: With the joint meshing option in Precede, can we obtain SCFs more accurately?

A: Yes you will still be able to generate TOW files manually or from Seastat.

Q: Definition of barge in launch - can the fully defined barge be used?

A: We plan to add the use of the 3D barges to launch in future.

Q: Is analysis Time Domain or Frequency Domain?

A: The panel method uses frequency domain analysis. Results can be converted to time domain for
regular or irregular waves for visualization purposes.

Q: What is the name of the iPad model viewer on the iTunes App Store?

A: If you search iTunes for “Bentley Structural” you will find it. It is named Structural Synchronizer
View.

Q: How is the new SACS version compared with MOSES software?

A: The generation of RAOs will be similar. The use of Hull Modeller and Motions should allow faster
modeling, easier modeling of complex shapes, automated meshing and improved interaction and
visualization.

Q: For FPSO, SACS can do the topside module fatigue analysis. How about the vessel fatigue,
especially near topside module foundation area?

A: If the foundation part of the structure is included in the SACS model then it can be included in the
SACS analysis and fatigue calcs.

Q: For Advanced SACS, does it support multiple cores?

A: Multi-core analysis is in SACS Offshore Enterprise but not in SACS Offshore Advanced.

Q: Are there any improvements in Datagen?

A: A completely new Datagen was released with v5.4 which provides significantly improved editing
and context sensitive help.

Q: Will SACS ever incorporate plate buckling?

A: We currently support plate buckling checks to the DNV code. API buckling checks will be added in
future.

Q: When importing structural models as cargo for stability and motions, does the program import
structure loads as well or only modeled structure weights?

A: The structural weight only is imported for inclusion in stability load cases. However other load
cases are passed through to TOW for inclusion there.

Q: How do we learn more about this year’s Be Inspired Award winner and finalists in the Offshore
Engineering category?

A: Bentley is proud to have received a number of great use cases for this new category. The Offshore
finalists and winner were outstanding uses of Bentley products for their offshore projects. Consider
entering your innovative project in next year’s competition, which will be announced in Spring 2013!

Q: What is SDNF?

A: Steel Detailing Neutral Format - this is used by a lot of steel detailing programs and is a useful way
to transfer models between SACS and these programs. However, you should use ISM if interchanging
with Bentley’s ProSteel detailing software.

Q: Is the analysis affected if the offset is not considered in the modeling?

A: You do need to apply the member offset in Precede or the input file for there to be any effect on the
analysis results. If you do not include the offset of members to all be top of steel, depending where the
membdoing an area loading some members not within the tolerance will not be loaded and this will
affect the results.

Q: Does SACS v5.4 allow you to now use the views you have created in Precede to be used in post
view?

A: Bentley is currently integrating the post-processing functions of Postvue into Precede so that all
viewing functions can be shared in future. Yes, if you open your Postvue file in 3D Postvue you can see
all the views you had saved in the model.

Q: Is it possible to make group for the buckling length?

A: Yes, you can define a Member Group and set the buckling length to apply to the entire group.

Q: Are there any changes in loading entity?

A: Bentley’s next quarterly Offshore webinar (July 18, 2013) will focus on loading in SACS, recent
changes include enhanced stream function loads.

Q: Do you arrange training sessions for new SACS users?

A: Yes, both online and hands on/in-person training is available. Companies with a SELECT
subscription can access self-paced training at the Bentley LEARN server.
Q: Is the 3D psvdb improved further to include all the capabilities of the legacy psvdb?

A: The development team is currently working on making all features in the old Postvue to be
available in the 3D Postvue. This should be available in SACS v5.6.

Q: What is the minimum hardware requirement for software installation?

A: Any modern machine running Windows 7 should run SACS just fine. For larger models, Bentley
recommends 8GB or more of RAM. The new 64-bit version of Precede will take advantage of this
additional memory.

Q: Is it useful to know how to import the SACS modeled structures to STAAD and vice versa?

A: ISM can be used to exchange structural models between SACS and STAAD.

Q: Can you combining the volumes?

A: More than one volume can be combined using the Volumes dialogue box.

Q: Is there any chance that SACS error messages are detailed clearly?

A: Bentley is continuing to improve SACS documentation including documentation of error messages.

Q: Is it possible to segment a variable section member that already exists?

A: Yes, you can use the Member Property dialogue box to specify that a member is tapered and specify
the number of segments along the member.

Q: Will you be able to see the stress diagrams of the whole structure in Postvue similar to STAAD?

A: As Bentley combines Postvue into Precede, we will add additional viewing capabilities including
global moment and stress diagrams. You can display color coded stress renderings using Postvue3D.

Q: If the member chosen as a reference for member offset is changed, will the other member offsets
automatically adjust?

A: No, if you change the depth of the reference member, you will need to re-apply the Member Flush
command to align to the new depth.

Q: Does SACS have a copy of member command like STAAD?

A: There is not a Copy Member command in SACS, but Bentley will consider this for the future. If
you use the Joint/Translate and Rotate box, you can choose to duplicate joints or members you already
have in your model. This will duplicate what you want and you can specify the location.

Q: For non-tubular member connect to tubular member, this non-tubular member cannot offset outside
of tubular member. Can the new version of SACS do this?
A: Yes, member offsets can be applied to any distance including outside of an adjacent member.

Q: Can you give an example for PDMS or STAAD to SACS?

A: You can use SDNF to transfer data between PDMS and SACS. ISM can be used for STAAD.

Q: Is there any way to divide plates by members automatically?

A: Not presently, but this will be in a future enhancement to SACS.

Q: Is it possible to add a LCSEL for deflection checks only?

A: No, it is not.

Q: Shouldn’t the matrix decomposition error specify the exact reason?

A: It is not always possible to determine the exact cause of a decomposition error, but Bentley will
continue to improve error messages.

Q: Release labels seem too crowded for big structures. Is there any plan to change it to symbols?

A: This is a good suggestion and Bentley will consider this for the future.

Q: Sometimes there is an issue in joint co-ordinate. For example when we create a joint at 5.3 it will
show 5.299998. Why?

A: Round off error for floating point numbers is always possible in any engineering program.

Q: We have to do aluminium design with Eurocode 9. Does SACS support this?

A: EC9 code checking is not available in SACS.

Q: Is it possible to display the member segment length in GUI?

A: Yes, turning on the Length labels in the Labelling Options dialogue shows a value for each segment
of the member.

Q: Can a joint can punching check for non-tubular members be included as per EC3?

A: Currently this is not in SACS, but Bentley’s software development team will consider it.

Q: Group number currently is 3 digit only, can it be increased to 4-5 digits?

A: It is limited to three characters. Bentley will consider this for future enhancement.

Q: What about the Jack up? Can I model it using SACS?

A: Yes, SACS has been used to model jackup structures.

Q: Can AutoCAD bring in .ism.dgn files?

A: Yes, AutoCAD can read .dgn files via ProSteel.

Q: To model the rectangular deck plate, can we click 4 joint in any order or do we need to follow any
specific order?

A: When adding plates, you can click on the joints in clockwise or counter-clockwise order but the

A: Currently only triangular and quad elements are available for meshing.

Q: Will the 5.6 version be automatically upgraded to the 5.7 version? Or is there a process for doing
so?

A: The SACS installations between major versions are side by side. Installations within a major
version automatically upgrade your installation.

Q: For non-modeled structures in corrosion zone, do we need to give cd,cm separately?

A: Cd and Cm will automatically be calculated in accordance to the user defined criterion in SACS.

Q: In scripted installation, can we script the license tool appearing while launching the SACS for the
first time?

A: There is no way currently to do this. We are discussing this issue with the licensing group.

Q: It was mentioned that for modeling corrosion parameters, we can divide the member in to various
zone. Kindly explain more about how to perform this.

A: The user can define multiple zones in the vertical direction with either an absolute or a percentage
amount of corrosion.

Q: Can SACS models be opened from ProjectWise directly?

A: Yes - from inside Precede, you can open a model file directly from ProjectWise.

Q: Explain how to use reports database.

A: The SACS Help in the SACS Executive (under the Support tab) contains full instructions on the use
of the Results database. See SACS Report Database in that file.

Q: If I opened SACS using the default license twice a day, will it be considered as two counts of
license usage?

A: No - usage is counted based on the number of unique machines that use the software. Usage on the
same machine does not count as additional usage.

Q: For assigning non-linear material to a model in SACS, do we need to describe the stress-strain
points (e.g. Using Ramberg-Osgood law)?

A: The Ramberg-Osgood law may be used to generate the stress-strain points if needed.

Q: Is it necessary to maintain pipe support coordinate of AutoPIPE and SACS model support
coordinate to import pipe loads correctly?

A: Yes, the user should model joints at the pipe support locations on the pipe support.

Q: How do we apply time history loading for fatigue analysis?

A: A time history joint load can be applied via a time history input file. Both uniform and non-uniform
time history inputs are possible.

Q: Where can I get the tutorials to learn this software?

A: The Bentley LEARN server contains some basic modeling and analysis tutorials. Go to
http://learn.bentley.com.

Q: In SACS 5.6, while modifying member loads from Precede, we can modify one member-load or all
member-loads at a time within a specific loading. Can we also modify multiple member-loads (not
one/all but few) within a load ID from Precede?

A: The Load Properties feature in Precede will allow the user to edit a single or all Member or Joint
loads for each load case.

Q: Are there any limitations in ProjectWise?

A: There are no limits in ProjectWise. Any number of files can be stored, any size of file can be stored,
and any different types of files can be stored.

Q: How does ProjectWise address joint re-numbering or joint re-ordering?

A: All changes between files can be tracked.

Q: How do you mesh a joint with I or box cord with Tubular & box brace?

A: The meshing procedure for joints with arbitrary chord and brace sections is the same as meshing a
tubular joint.

Q: Can we put a lock on use of certain type of module for all users? And later if the user request we
can only allow him the access to that module?

A: This can be achieved by using custom activation groups. Please see this article in the Bentley
communities.

Q: SACS POST manual refers to appendix F EC-3 1992 to define end restraints for unbraced length
for the bottom flange. Is this still applicable to latest EC-3? If not, the SACS manual needs to be
updated. How do you define end restraint lengths for compression flange to check lateral buckling of a
member in SACS v5.7? Can Lb be defined to top flange & bottom flange separately?

A: The unbraced length of the bottom flange is applicable for the latest EC3 code. The unbraced length
is defined in columns 48-51 of the GROUP line. The unbraced length of the compression flange (top)
can be defined in columns 60-64 of the MEMBER input line.

Q: How do you model deck plate continuous over member’s length instead of modeling it between 4/3
nodes?

A: The new Plate – Mesh command in Precede can be used to automatically create a plate mesh which
subdivides the members along its side to provide nodal continuity.

Q: Will the files made in SACS 5.6 version will work for 5.7 version?

A: All input files from 5.6 should be compatible with 5.7 (Postvue database may not be compatible).

Q: Can we create 3D PDF of SACS Model that contains model information?

A: This is currently not possible.

Q: Under ProjectWise, how many users at a time can update the file in server?

A: ProjectWise only allows one user at a time to check out, modify, and check in the model. However,
any number of users can download the model, compare and merge its changes with their own model.

Q: Corrosion modeling is applicable to both stiffness analysis and code checks, or can it be used only
for code checks?

A: Corrosion modeling is applicable to stiffness, loading and code checking.

Q: How can we satisfy code requirements in terms of mesh densities for SCF extraction?

A: Currently the user will have to manually search for the maximum stress at the desired locations
specified by the code. This will be automated in a future release.

Q: In reality, corrosion is not uniform, so users wish to include only for code checks and not in
stiffness analysis. Is this possible without the help of member overrides in post input file?

A: Corrosion modeling will automatically adjust the member section dimensions for stiffness
calculations. It will be necessary to use overrides to maintain the stiffness.

Q: Do we have a facility for running SACS on servers where users can submit jobs to server? If we do
not have this functionality at the moment, are we planning to have this in future?

A: SACS can be run on a local machine or a server. Later this year, we will offer a cloud service which
will allow you to run multiple load cases and models across different computers in the cloud.

Q: How do we get the continuing education credits? How can I get a certificate of attendance?

A: You can earn 1 Professional Development Hour (PDH) from Bentley Institute for attending this 1-
hour webinar. To review/access your learning history/transcript, log in to your profile or contact your
local Bentley LEARN administrator. You may then use your online learning history/transcript to self-
report learning to your organization, licensing board, or professional association as proof of your
continued professional development to maintain your credentials. Please note that organizations’
requirements vary, and they make the ultimate decision about whether to accept Bentley Institute
Professional Development Hours. We recommend you confirm your own board’s or association’s terms
and conditions.

Q: How do I view this webinar again or share it with a colleague?

A: This event has been recorded and can be viewed online in the OnDemand Video Library.
