To develop and promote foundational
knowledge about First Nations, Métis,
and Inuit peoples into my classroom,
learning strategies, and lesson planning.
 Utilizing and developing educational
resources on FNMI culture to use within
my teaching practice.
 Attend the Indigenous course through
University of Alberta to familiarize myself
with FNMI culture

 Incorporate more land-based learning

strategies into my classroom for each
subject

 Collaborate with other student teachers, and

teachers in my school to collectively create
a resource list that every teacher could have
access to, to incorporate effective
classroom resources.

Reflections:
Based on my professional practice and my observations of student learning . . .
What should I do more of?
 Include more opportunities in my
teaching practice for land-based
learning
 Teach my students what a sharing
circles and incorporate it more into my
teaching practice
 Reach out to an elder or community
member that is part of the Indigenous
culture to come into the classroom.
Because
These will make the classroom more
inclusive and highlight diversity within
the classroom. By doing so, the
classroom culture will be more positive
and then hopefully spread throughout
the school and community
What new things could I do?
 Spending time completing research as
to what the best practices are to include
FNMI resources into my teaching
practices
Because
 As a teacher it is our duty to do outside
research to provide our students with
the best possible resources for them.

What should I do less of?
 Assuming that the students have been
taught about FNMI knowing and being
from other teachers and are aware of
why it is important to learn how we can
move towards reconciliation with
Indigenous people.
Because
 Some schools have yet to fully embrace
including FNMI knowledge, especially
elementary schools as they are unsure
how to educate younger students on
potentially challenging topics.
What should I stop doing?
 Assuming that because I have taken a
course on Indigenous education that I
know everything about Indigenous
culture and ways of knowing.
Because
 As a teacher it is a part of our TQS to
engage in career long learning and
should be educating ourselves so that
we are able to educate our students
better.
