For the learner:
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time.
You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being
an active learner.
The following are some reminders in using this module:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of
the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other
activities included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your
answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with
it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you
are not alone.
We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning
and gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!

3 History of Abstractionism

Let’s Recall
For the last session, we talked about the art movement which is
expressionism. You have learned that it has many sub- movements. Every
movement has its distinct characteristics in terms of the artworks, the styles
of the artists in creating their artwork.

3
Let’s Explore
ABSTRACTIONISM
Another group of artistic styles emerged at the same time as the
expressionist movement. It had the same spirit of freedom of expression and
openness that ways. This group of styles was known as abstractionism.
The abstractionist movement arose from the intellectual points of view in the
20th century. In the world of science, physicists were formulating a new view
of the universe, which resulted in the concepts of space-time and relativity.
This intellectualism was reflected even in art. While expressionism was
emotional,
abstractionism was logical and rational. It involved analyzing, detaching,
selecting, and simplifying.
In previous centuries, works of art were a reflection, in one way or
another, of the outside world. In 20th century abstractionism, natural
appearances became unimportant. Artists reduced a scene into geometrical
shapes, patterns, lines, angles, textures and swirls of color. The resulting
works ranged from Representational abstractionism, depicting still
recognizable subjects to pure abstractionism, where no recognizable subject
could be discerned.

Grouped under abstractionism are the following art styles:

 cubism
 futurism
 mechanical style
 nanobjectivism

Cubism
The cubist style derived its name from the cube, a three dimensional
geometric figure composed of strictly measured lines, planes, and angles.
Cubist artworks were, therefore, a play of planes and angles on a flat surface.
Foremost among the cubists was Spanish painter/sculptor Pablo Picasso. In
earlier styles, subjects were depicted in a three-dimensional manner, formed
by light and shadow. In contrast, the cubists analyzed their subjects’ basic
geometrical forms, and broke them up into a series of planes. Then they re-
assembled these planes, tilting and interlocking them in different ways.

Let’s Elaborate
ACTIVITY # 1: CUBIST ARTWORK
Procedures/ instructions:
1.Review the description of Picasso’s cubist style.
2. Based on this, plan a cubist artwork for you to create
3. Prepare magazines, assorted photographs, 1 sheet of Oslo paper, scissors,
glue or paste
4. select a large photograph from the magazine and/or other photos and cut
these into segments of different shapes and sizes.
5. Glue or paste all the segments on the Oslo paper, slightly misaligned and
with gaps if you wish but with the image still recognizable.

4
6. Give your cubist artwork a title
7. Pass your artwork to the teacher through your parents.
8.Label your artwork, write your name, the date and the technique used
9. Your artwork will be graded basing on this rubrics.

Let’s Remember
Abstractionism was another movement of modern art in Europe in the
early 1900’s.While expressionism was emotional, abstractionism was logical
and rational. It reduced an image into geometrical shapes, patterns, lines,
angles, textures, and field of strokes of color- in effect, the elements of art.
Abstractionism has several sub-movements namely: cubism, futurism,
mechanical style, and nonobjectivism. Pablo Picasso is the foremost figures in
abstract art, along with Fernand Leger and Piet Mondrian.
