The Fundamentals of Leadership Still Haven’t Changed

This case focusses on the leadership qualities that all the great leaders who are successful possess. Here a chief HR officer
of a healthcare firm asked about the best new framework for leadership that she could use to develop and train a cadre of
high potentials. She was facing a difficult challenge, where the managers were highly proficient in their own disciplines but
she needed them to be bigger leaders who could learn to lead multiple functions or a whole segment of an organization.
And she was assuming that newest thinking on leadership development must contain something essential since there were
so many books written about leadership every year. Also many new assessment tools which are based on advanced brain
science made available along with many new computer aided algorithms for decision making which are providing
knowledge on leadership. But the reality is different. The leadership development industry is thriving with many new and
interesting ideas. But after conducting a large research it was found that there were six fundamental practices that were
common between best leaders who had the most outside impact. The starting points may be different for different leaders
or they may focus more on one aspect as compared to others but they definitely have practiced all the 6 practices at
different stages. One of the leaders interviewed was Seraina Macia. She joined XL insurance in 2010 to head the North
American property and casualty unit. The current growth was slow but stable. She envisioned that the unit can be
transformed into a much faster growing and profitable company with a wider range of products. So she formed the team
and brought them around this vision. She then challenged them to translate her vision into action. When she saw that
some members struggled she replaced them with others. Thus forming a strong team which was able to respond quickly.
She incorporated the leadership practices and finally achieved success.

To move their organizations to next level, all the leaders deployed such practices. Even though they were operating in
different industries they were still dealing with people who needed to work to achieve a common goal, and this is what
leadership is all about.
