Lesson Composing Clear and Coherent
Sentences Using Appropriate
1 Grammatical Structures:
Aspects of Verbs
Verbs may be simply classified into present, past, or future tenses
depending on the time that the action occurred. However, tense of the verb
differs from aspect. The aspect of the verb refers to the form or structure when
the action happened at any specific time.
Understanding the different aspects of verbs gives us a clearer picture
of the action in the things we or others do.

What’s In

Fill in the blanks with the correct form of the verb as suggested by the
tense of the verb inside the parenthesis. Write your answers on a separate
sheet of paper.

1. My sister _________________ to the market to buy vegetables. (go-past)

2. She _______________ a special dish later. (cook-future)
3. She ______________ cooking a lot. (enjoy-present)
4. Father ______________that her chopsuey is the best. (comment-present)
5. My cousin ________________ a plate of adobo early this morning. (bring-
present)
6. There _______________ a typhoon coming tomorrow. (is-future)
7. We ________________ basic goods later. (buy-future)
8. A strong typhoon ________________ properties two years ago. (destroy-
past)
9. My mother _________________ in for the latest news now. (tune-present)
10.The newscaster _______________ that typhoon Rolly is a strong one. (say-
present)

2
What’s New

The aspects of the verb tell whether an action is happening now (or
ongoing) or completed. In this exercise, tell whether the action stated by the
underlined verb is ongoing, completed, or indefinite. Write your answers on a
separate sheet of paper.

__________________1. They went to the plaza.

__________________2. The wind is blowing now.
__________________3. I have finished answering the activities.
__________________4. Our teacher has checked our modules.
__________________5. He is preparing another set of activities now.
__________________6. I am going to draw my favorite cartoon character later.
__________________7. Mother has transplanted the seedlings in new pots.
__________________8. She has watered them afterwards.
__________________9. She will sell them at the market tomorrow.
_________________10. Cultivating vegetables has kept her busy during the
pandemic.

What is It

You already know that the tense of the verb indicates whether an action
happened in the past, is happening at present or will happen in the future.
Aspects, however, tell us whether the action is ongoing or already completed
or sometimes ongoing but finished. Sometimes it is also indefinite, which
means it does not emphasize if it is completed or ongoing.
The following are the four aspects of verbs:
1. Simple aspect or indefinite aspect which does not tell if action is
completed or ongoing
Example: The student presented the video of their activities.

3
2. Perfect aspect, one in which the action is completed.
Example: They have presented the video before their leader came.

3. Progressive aspect or the continuing aspect.

Example: They were presenting the video when their leader came.

4. Perfect Progressive aspect which states an action ongoing but then

finished.
Example: They had been presenting the video before their leader came.

Simple Aspect Example

Simple past tense I gave
Simple present I give
Simple future tense I will give
Perfect Aspect Example
Past perfect tense I had given
Present perfect tense I have given
Future perfect tense I will have given
Progressive aspect Example
Past progressive I was giving
Present progressive I am giving
Future progressive I will be giving
Perfect Progressive Example
Past perfect progressive I had been giving
Present perfect progressive I have been giving
Future perfect progressive I will have been giving

The following set of examples will be helpful in distinguishing each

aspect from another:
