ACTIVITY #1

Origin and Structure of the Earth

Directions: Complete the table below by supplying the needed information (You could add more table if
you needed).
Theory Proponent/Supporters Description/Contributions
Cosmic Inflation Theory Alan Guth, Andrei Linde, Paul States that an extraordinary
Stein Hart, & Andy Abrecht burst of expansion in the very
early stages of the universe
inflated the size by factor of 50
Steady State Theory Hermann Bondi, Thomas Gold, States that the density of
& Sir Fred Hoyle matter remains unchanged
because of the continuous
creation of matter. If a new
galaxy appears, the old galaxy
disappears
Big Bang Theory Georges Lemaitre According to this theory, all
current and past matter in the
Universe formed at the same
time, around 13.8 billion years
ago. All matter was compressed
into an extremely small ball
with infinite density and intense
heat, known as a Singularity, at
this period.

Concepts Proponent/Supporters Description/Contributions

Geocentric Claudius Ptolemy, Aristotle The earth is at the center of the
universe, and all of the planets
revolve around it.
Heliocentric Nicolaus Copernicus, Johannes The sun is the center of the
Kepler & Galileo Galilei solar system and all planets
orbit the sun.
Theocentric God-Centered

Discussion:

1. In at least 200 words and maximum of 300 words. Which Theory best described about the
origin of the universe?

The Big Bang Theory best described the origin of the universe, it is the most widely accepted and
popular scientific theory due to a range of evidence that can support/back up the Theory. It emerged
after astronomers observed that other galaxies were moving away from their own in all directions as if
they were being hit by an ancient explosive force. Many pieces of evidence support the theory, one of
these is the idea that the universe is expanding, which is supported by a phenomenon known as the
red-shift. The universe is also described as hot before its expansion due to the presence of cosmic
microwave background or CMB, which are remnants of the early universe, and the relative abundance
of different elements in the universe. Other observations also show that the universe is steadily
expanding. In comparison to other theories concerning the origin of the universe, these pieces of
evidence suggest that the Big Bang Theory best describes the origin of the universe.
2. In at least 200 words and maximum of 300 words. Which concept best described the physical
position of the solar system and the earth in the universe?

The Heliocentric Theory best described the physical position of the solar system and the Earth in the
universe among the others, it states that the sun is the center of the solar system and the planets orbit
the sun that contradicts the idea of the geocentric model that claims that the Earth is the center. Other
than it is the model we know today and the accepted model of the solar system, it provided pieces of
evidence that supported its claims, one of these is the discovery of Galileo Galilei, the supporter of this
Theory observed the four moons in orbit around Jupiter, the phases of Venus, and the angular size of
the sun. Another evidence is the observation of Johannes Kepler that defined the planet’s orbits he
stated that the planets move in elliptical orbits. These pieces of evidence and support practically proved
that the Earth was not the center of the universe and the Heliocentric model best described the solar
system and the Earth’s position in the universe.
